  1. Do you suppose the Pohlads could lure Nolan Ryan up here to get our pitching straightened out!
  2. does this mean Kubel's HR off of Price will carry more weight than it otherwise might.. Just wondering what you think.
  3. Maybe Worley just needs to pitch on 12 days rest?
  4. good catch Leviathan. Antony pretty much did imply that some guys get blocked and other don't, in the context of saying the Twins want to give Plouffe more time to develop at the major league level regardless of how well they thought Sano could hit.
  5. So I think cost was a factor. I think 30$ million is a lot of money even for a baseball ownership. What diehard said a while back: Twins just didn't think Santana was worth what he was asking, Twins had already awarded two contracts like that this offseason, and many people want to see what happens with the battle for the fifth rotation spot. I can live with all of that. Gibson was out for about a week as he became a new daddy! (congrats to Kyle and Elizabeth by the way) but he'll come back with a chance to pitch himself into the rotation now.
  6. I love the blocking debate but you remember Doumit had 100+ starts last year..
  7. Can we swing a deal for Delmon? We know he can hit.
  8. Buxton's a Sir guy too, FWIW.
  9. Old guy, yes, I think it could be at least competitive. You don't need five starters in the post season. I get what you are saying Trautmann. Seems to me though that the best rotations in baseball are self developed, so yes there are far better ones. Cards, Giants, Rays, Braves, for example. Seattle should hang on to their pitchers better. If the Twins make one more signing (Ervin Santana for example) it would be hard to deny that the Twins are giving up on developing their own pitchers. That's what bothers me most. I'm hopeful for Hughes though; he is still pretty young and seems to have some stuff. We could make him our own. Santana does feel like a Correia-type short cut to me--somebody else's mediocre guy we are using for a while.
  10. I love the Bill James dashboard. Interesting that the two worst performing position players are Bartlett and Kubel. Phil Miller has a short article on Kubel tonight (3/9). It would seem Kubel's already made the 25-man cut. No one seems to really have any concern. Apparently none of them have seen Parker's heat charts. (it's still early, I could be wrong, Kubel could mash, etc) In the article, Gardenhire says he plans to use Kubel as DH and PH this year. Anyway, for better or worse, it's one less question mark going into the season.
  11. and for the record, I love this rotation too.. especially if Gibson is in there..
  12. But I'm happy with the rotation as it stands now!1 1. With the caveat that either Correia or Pelfrey does pitch well to start the season, and that one of Gibson, Worley, or Diamond does actually earn the final spot. (Deduno and Swarzak being apparently headed for the pen regardless of their performance.)
  13. I wish they had upgraded the offense, but I think the Hughes signing is a shrewd one. I expect him to do very well.
  14. You are right. I think the bottom line is that they still want to improve.
  15. Not April 1, 2016, but maybe September 30, 2015. I'm just having a little trouble figuring out what our plan is. I'd sign a hitter, if anything. Even Drew. Three years -- if this report has truth -- three years to another free agent pitcher right now literally leaves zero open rotation spots for guys to compete for, and one spot to compete for next year.
  16. Or this: 1. Nolasco 2. Hughes 3. Pelfrey 4. Correia 5. Santana
  17. No I was at that game. I talked to a bunch of other people who were too.
  18. If Pinto is the future catcher, then I feel he needs to be in the majors. So agree with JL's original post. Maybe Pinto should have come up in 2012 too. I don't know what his 40-man status was in 2012. Options options options. I get the sense that player decisions are being made based on some perceived administrative benefit, rather than who can just play better. I get the sense this has been building for a few years now. I'm hoping we put the best 25 players on the team to start the season, regardless of player development rules. They need to be considered, no doubt. But sheesh. I will also take this moment to lobby for Gibson again
  19. Somebody photoshopped a squirrel over where the ball was.
  20. I also think he stays at first base. It might have been possible to see Mauer and Morneau at some point play the corner positions, but no dice. Mauer could play a better third than Plouffe I have no doubt. I admit I'd love to see Mauer in the outfield getting under a medium-deep fly ball on a sac fly situation, just to see how he throws
  21. Hopefully the free agent signings light a fire under those 3 or 4 guys we are all arguing about. I prefer to see Gibson win the last spot, regardless of options. Worley's gonna have to turn the page after today and try again next time out. With Diamond, your guess is as good as mine.
  22. ^ and I just read that Cole Hamels has said his arm doesn't feel right. Ouch. Again, there might not be a better time to trade Correia than right now.
  23. Nope me neither. I very much agree. Guzman and Rivas had their cup of coffee together at age 20-21. A J saw MLB time at age 21 and was full time catcher by 25.
  24. I do agree with Seth that you want to pull for him and I think Collabello could help us if we pick his spots/at-bats smartly, if the team has useful data to apply to help them pick their spots. I do agree with John too, that just being away from the very top level through the prime years of the 20s is a physiological disadvantage. I agree with the player in the Gibson instance. Gibson's appearances in AAA in 2013 do not signal someone rehabbing an injury. Six innings per start and two complete games. 6 IP per start is what the guys in the majors were averaging. This will be a good year for Gibson. Bring him north!
