  1. I can tell you photoshopped this because you made one arm shorter than the other
  2. A day late ... ... and a dollar short: We now return to Kent Hrbek.
  3. Looking at Escobar's minor league baseball card, it also looks like he's had some speed in the past, if not quite a burner. Could he be our leadoff hitter to start? (which would also smartly push Hicks back into a 7-9 slot)
  4. I've been a big Florimon supporter but have cooled a little. If Escobar can do the job, and if Florimon is really so far behind with batting against live pitching as Thrylos is reporting, then I think there's nothing wrong with rolling with Escobar opening day. Which leaves quite a dilemma-- you've sent Florimon to AAA so he can get his bat working.. hmm...
  5. Just listening to a game now and then, and reading some of the box scores, I'd say Bartlett is out-hitting Kubel, despite the difference in batting average. I could be wrong. Sounds like Bartlett made some good contact yesterday and stole a base today, which will help his cause. Looks like Bartlett is also starting to see time at 2B/RF. I know Gardy has plans for Kubel to DH and be a bat off the bench this year too (don't have link).
  6. Thanks for update. I think they really want to give Guerrier a long look now, and I don't know how you (the Twins, that is) leave Tonkin behind anymore - definitely agree. If ST is any sort of tryout and not a complete formality, then Colabello seems like a lock at this point. If Florimon is so far behind like has been written, then that's also a real issue. Too bad about Santana's glove and the baseballs that routinely pop out of it.
  7. for closers, basically one-inning specialists, I think the common stats work pretty good. Saves, opportunities, innings, ERA/Whip, K. Perkins doesn't have a lot of years as a closer but he looks pretty good so far to me.
  8. I think you are dreaming I can understand your concerns and have some of my own, but I also have some serious issues with the data in the articles you linked to. For starters, we could all try to measure closers by Saves and not WAR. Anyway, I think this is a good deal for both sides and I'm happy for Perkins. His head is in a good place and I agree w/ the Twins that he's more likely to perform like a veteran closer than many of the younger guys who come and go.
  9. I agree with every word.. ..and then I realized, if true, that's quite an indictment on Mauer as a backstop. Considering our ERAs in recent years. So there's got to be more to it. Maybe Pinto has progressed this far without being able to communicate with pitchers effectively or call a good game, or whatever. Could be true. That would be unfortunate. One month of good stats last September (plus a good Spring training so far) will be a poor reason to start him in the minors. My personal opinion is bring him up Day 1. Let him learn major league catching skills in the majors. If he does struggle with the bat he can be optioned.
  10. Gibby Gibby Gibby.. dang you
  11. Beachy and Medlen too.
  12. Do you suppose the Pohlads could lure Nolan Ryan up here to get our pitching straightened out!
  13. does this mean Kubel's HR off of Price will carry more weight than it otherwise might.. Just wondering what you think.
  14. Maybe Worley just needs to pitch on 12 days rest?
  15. good catch Leviathan. Antony pretty much did imply that some guys get blocked and other don't, in the context of saying the Twins want to give Plouffe more time to develop at the major league level regardless of how well they thought Sano could hit.
  16. So I think cost was a factor. I think 30$ million is a lot of money even for a baseball ownership. What diehard said a while back: Twins just didn't think Santana was worth what he was asking, Twins had already awarded two contracts like that this offseason, and many people want to see what happens with the battle for the fifth rotation spot. I can live with all of that. Gibson was out for about a week as he became a new daddy! (congrats to Kyle and Elizabeth by the way) but he'll come back with a chance to pitch himself into the rotation now.
  17. I love the blocking debate but you remember Doumit had 100+ starts last year..
  18. Can we swing a deal for Delmon? We know he can hit.
  19. Buxton's a Sir guy too, FWIW.
  20. Old guy, yes, I think it could be at least competitive. You don't need five starters in the post season. I get what you are saying Trautmann. Seems to me though that the best rotations in baseball are self developed, so yes there are far better ones. Cards, Giants, Rays, Braves, for example. Seattle should hang on to their pitchers better. If the Twins make one more signing (Ervin Santana for example) it would be hard to deny that the Twins are giving up on developing their own pitchers. That's what bothers me most. I'm hopeful for Hughes though; he is still pretty young and seems to have some stuff. We could make him our own. Santana does feel like a Correia-type short cut to me--somebody else's mediocre guy we are using for a while.
  21. I love the Bill James dashboard. Interesting that the two worst performing position players are Bartlett and Kubel. Phil Miller has a short article on Kubel tonight (3/9). It would seem Kubel's already made the 25-man cut. No one seems to really have any concern. Apparently none of them have seen Parker's heat charts. (it's still early, I could be wrong, Kubel could mash, etc) In the article, Gardenhire says he plans to use Kubel as DH and PH this year. Anyway, for better or worse, it's one less question mark going into the season.
  22. and for the record, I love this rotation too.. especially if Gibson is in there..
  23. But I'm happy with the rotation as it stands now!1 1. With the caveat that either Correia or Pelfrey does pitch well to start the season, and that one of Gibson, Worley, or Diamond does actually earn the final spot. (Deduno and Swarzak being apparently headed for the pen regardless of their performance.)
  24. I wish they had upgraded the offense, but I think the Hughes signing is a shrewd one. I expect him to do very well.
