  1. I also think Diamond and Worley would be claimed but I just don't see room for both on the roster. If Gibson pitches great this spring, it would be wrong to send him to Rochester just to keep one of those guys around. We'll see. I get the sense that they are already planning for Deduno to live on and off the DL all year.
  2. You are right. Antony did seem to imply that there were some unknown "other guys" who put us in those early 3-0 deficits. Everyone knows we have been bad. Our pitching is retooled, our offense will still struggle, try to play some good D, and we have some good prospects almost ready. No need for the FO to spin anything this spring.. Overall I thought it was a good article for people who don't inhabit TD.
  3. Whew ... glad I wasn't the only one who got a jolt reading that quote...
  4. A nice story, very good signings. As a sometimes critic of this team the past several years, I'm much happier this year and willing to give the players, coaches, and FO much more leeway now. But this stuck out: Over time, LENIII has really insulated himself imo and does no favors to his cause by running this quote. It's almost a parody to me, and I know many others, that all Gardenhire can say about a player anymore is that he "gets after it" and "battles" so I'd really have preferred LENIII was aware that this quote was almost a self caricature of how the coaching staff is performing right now. That's my perception anyway. Would be happy to be proved wrong this year. Out on the practice field the conversations are much different and much more technical than in a sound bite. I'm sure Anderson had much more intelligent stuff to say and that LENIII just wanted to work Redmond into the story somehow. But this quote just resurrects those old concerns that players struggling through slumps are mainly being told to "keep battling" and that long-tenured coaches like ours are no longer adapting, need a long break to clear their heads and come back to the game fresh. Anyway, those are one person's thoughts. I'm excited about Nolasco and the new rotation, am optimistic this year, and ready to eat up news stories about the Twins again.
  5. Jeter's retirement is an interesting little wrinkle, no doubt. That the Twins might find themselves in the FA shortstop market the same year as the Yankees. I'm curious to know if this changes any minds on Drew, one way or another. I'd still say no thank you to Drew, roll with Florimon for '14, re-assess in offseason.
  6. Bottom of 9th, Game 7, lead-off single… how big is that!?
  7. The next person who tells you Jeter was the best Yankee to ever play the game, or even in the top 5 or 10, unless they are the teenage girl, tell them "Uff-da" in reply. I do think that would be overrating him. First ballot HOF though, absolutely. I don't watch the sports shows either so no idea what they are saying.
  8. Well, he was also a great New York Yankee. What do I mean by that? Not exactly sure - it's just that extra something he brought to the team beyond his offense and longetivity. His #2 will hang nicely among the other single digit Yankee numbers.
  9. You just couldn't wait a couple weeks...
  10. Those count : ) If i recall, Mauer began 2009 on the DL… so perhaps he had fresh legs when he joined the team and that carried him, and if playing first base this year means fresh legs, then he could have another nice year. Lots of ifs but also something to be optimistic about.
  11. All of Harper's seasons were low K%, his lowest being 1992 with 22 strikeouts in 546 plate appearances. Which is amazing. He was a little high in GDP per season but not anywhere near how often Mauer GDP's. Harper was a great player. I don't know if Mauer's increasing K rate is part of the same phenomenon as the rest of the team. However much he strikes out, I think he's sitting on a big year.
  12. I love that Halsey Hall story -- that one was just before my time so much appreciated. And that's about how I felt when Eddie G almost blew that Game 5 out in Oakland in 2002 Two other Iconic moments which probably fall outside the top ten but deserve mention (or reminiscence): Puckett getting 10 hits in 2 games in Milwaukee (he probably swung at the first pitch on each one) and Morneau's big homer against Zumaya in Detroit in 2006. I think both of those were in August. Ahh to have a pennant race again...
  13. Wishing here for a full recovery and quickest possible return to the ballpark.
  14. You have a point. The guy I had in mind was Arcia, who apparently desires to destroy every water cooler in the dugout after a routine 2nd inning strikeout. If Arcia can be coached into being a 25+ home run .800+ OPS guy this year, then he should feel okay with his strikeouts. We will need to find some power if we want to tolerate another record season of K's this year. Or something like that.
  15. Pudge was about 5 foot 7 with his cleats on. You don't see many every day catchers as tall as Mauer, so we are fortunate Mauer lasted as long as he did!
  16. And it's been great for us up here, to have a set of ears and eyes down there.
  17. Right on. If many or most of those things happen, the wins will follow. Also, we struck out too much last year and I trust Terry Ryan & Co. will implement a hitting program this year that reverses that.
  18. I like the 47.7 baseline for a 0 WAR team but in general am uneasy about that particular stat. At least Fangraphs and Baseball Reference can agree on what a home run is..
  19. To the rescue.. one of the most athletic plays any baseball player anywhere will ever make: http://www.nydailynews.com/sports/baseball/yankees/joe-mauer-blocks-brett-gardner-plate-fake-throw-1st-article-1.409800
  20. Herbie's Game 6 slam was huge. Nobody outside the Twins community would remember or care, but his homer in Yankee Stadium debut (1981) was a pretty big moment too, the first little point of light for that group signaling better things to come.
  21. Hmmm… you might be right. And come to think of it, I really can't figure out a good nickname for him either. I guess I'll pass. :-) I still like the idea of platooning Plouffie and Kubes in right, though.
  22. If Bonifacio is good at 3B, then I would sign him to play every day at 3B until Sano, and create a Plouffe-Kubel platoon in right.
  23. I've heard this too. I'm not sure it's the right explanation, but I recall hearing during radio broadcasts when Gladden, Provus & company have talked about Mauer "letting it rip" a little more last year and not worrying about K's as much.
  24. I did not mean Pohlad, actually. If Jim Pohlad issued a win-or-else ultimatum to Ryan, then good. It would hurt to see Ryan go, though, as he deserves credit for putting together those good teams and by all accounts he's a stand up guy. I actually do have faith that the team he is putting together can win in a couple of years. That said, many people on these boards would be curious to know more about his 180 degree reversal on free agents. I haven't seen any of our beat writers press for an answer yet, so until someone does we are left to speculate.
