  1. The walk is a little concerning.
  2. It's odd that Buxton has been thrown out on 2 of 3 of his steal attempts. You'd think that on speed alone he'd get down there. Or that the coaching staff would have a better guess on which pitches to send him or whether he's comfortable enough getting good jumps yet. Probably not. Heck maybe he should just take off the moment the pitcher flinches and if it turns out to be a pick off move to first, make the first baseman rush the throw down to second. Guys a lot slower than Buxton have occasionally stolen second on the pickoff move. Which gets back to the point that guys batting with Buxton on base figure to see more fastballs. Buxton got caught tonight on a called strike when the game was still close and it took the bat out of Rosario's hands. Of course, the way the bullpen is going, it probably didn't matter in this game.
  3. It's Kasota gold---it's obvious you're not one of us https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kasota_limestone
  4. try searching www.google.com it has a huge list of people
  5. Sure seems like Buxton is taking a lot of pitches. Especially the first strikes. I wonder if that is the plan. The best vantage point for seeing the spin of a big league breaking ball is from the batter's box, and you probably get a better look if you're not swinging at it. In time he'll be able to identify it the moment it leaves the pitchers hand. I still have hope for him.
  6. I'm not sure I like or agree with the Eric Davis comp. I much prefer the Torii Hunter, but with speed comparison, and that still might be low. Eric Davis hit for power but it appears he only hit 26 triples in his career. Buxton will have that many before he turns 25. The speed on the bases more than makes up for not reaching 30 homers a year.
  7. A big development: Gov. of South Carolina orders the confederate flag to be taken down from statehouse.
  8. See post immediately prior to yours. Again, Silver seems to want very badly for clutch hitting (or clutch whatever) to be a complete 100% disprovable myth. But eventually he has to admit it's probably not. Maybe he's since then written that it's a 100% myth, I don't know. Silver's statement that clutch hitting ability exists comes at the end of that discussion, not pulled selectively from somewhere in the middle. It's also weird that Matt Lawton's name comes up as one of the historically best clutch hitters. Does any regular fan remember anything Lawton ever did? Which circles back to definitions, methods, measurements, etc. The debate continues.
  9. I've browsed several of these clutch performance studies now. One problem with them appears to be that they struggle to consistently define what "clutch" is for the purpose of their measurements. And really, the only definition that matters is each fan's own definition of clutch for him or herself. So the debate will continue to rage. I did not misquote Silver. Reading the ESPN excerpt of Silver's chapters, I get the sense that he really, really wants to prove that clutch performance is a myth, but that he can't. He even says that, outside of the playoffs, David Ortiz actually wasn't much of a clutch hitter in 2004 at all. Think about that statement for a moment. To me that is as sublime an endorsement for the existence of clutch hitting than if Silver had shown it conclusively through research.
  10. Clutch hitting ability exists, more than previous research would indicate. - Nate Silver. Follow the links. Also, Dustin Johnson.
  11. The issue is....... maybe there are people who can tell. That's what the Cardinals hacking story seems to be about. Look at today's starter Jack Arrieta. In Baltimore, he was nothing more than replacement level. With the Cubs he's a #2 or #3 and throwing complete game shutouts against us. What do the Cubs know that no one else knows?
  12. I'd be thrilled too, but it doesn't appear they are going to. I think the benchmark is about a year for position players to pick up where they left off. I could be wrong. Sano is approaching 15 months and just a couple weeks ago Mientkiewicz said he still isn't even close. I have no idea what that means but it's a little bit concerning.
  13. Anyone have any data on how long a UCL recovery is for a position player?
  14. Do you feel we should calm expectations on Sano also? Or try to trade him?
  15. In all fairness, it's felt like an 8-0 game since the first inning. No life at all today. Best advice is to take advantage of a perrenielly underachieving White Six team next week.
  16. This I agree with. I would have trouble trading away Berrios for anything less than a Chris Sale type.
  17. Obviously Tabata could have jumped back out of the way, but it was an inside breaking ball and maybe he was just following the pitch. Here are the links, you be the judge Every out of Scherzer's no hitter (Tabata HBP at about 4:40): http://m.nationals.mlb.com/wsh/video/v182638883/pitwsh-scherzer-pitches-a-nohitter-vs-pirates/?affiliateId=clubMEGAMENU Article and slo mo vine of Tabata HBP: http://www.si.com/extra-mustard/2015/06/20/max-scherzer-no-hitter-jose-tabata-lean
  18. I was going to type "unfortunately I feel an 8 run inning coming" but I couldn't type fast enough before the carnage started Oh well chance to take 2 of 3 tomorrow.
  19. a fingernail, or the heels of both palms. He was safe.
  20. Sounded like 3 hard, loud outs, throw in a couple loud foul balls.
