  1. I can't think of anything more sad and lonesome in sports than a two-out, bases empty triple by the #7 hitter.
  2. Nice list. I remember shortly after Bryce Harper was called up, Cole Hamels welcomed him with a baseball in the ribs. "Welcome to the big leagues, kid." When Harper reached third base later in the inning, he stole home off Hamels straight from the delivery. "Nice to meet you too, Mr. Hamels." I expect so such drama surrounding Buxton today
  3. It's unfortunate to hear Hicks being scapegoated by the broadcasters again. Hicks has been playing a very good center field and then makes a terrible error at a terrible moment. He obviously has been prone to lapses in concentration in the past, if not in such big moments. I hope an intense experience like this will sober Hicks up far more than any AAA demotion ever did.
  4. Don't forget the part where I said "IF the Twins are dead set on keeping Plouffe at 3B and Mauer at 1B" It's an important condition, no? And on deeper inspection Blackmon doesn't really look that great, though I've always seen him as a spark plug. And we've just promoted Buxton which I honestly didn't expect. So maybe a better position to upgrade is catcher or shortstop anyway. The Twins have always treated DH as a catch all slot and not worth using a full time player there. Do you see a position for Sano for several years if they don't trade Plouffe? And like diehard and others are pointing out, Mauer is taking up the other corner infield spot. Someone really, really promising will need to be dealt. That's not a bad thing.
  5. Your prayers are answered. Per Provus: He is being called up!
  6. Didn't know that was the split for that guy. I wouldn't give up Sano for that, no matter how far away he is from contributing or doesn't have a position.
  7. Like I said, if the Twins are privately set on keeping Plouffe at third and Mauer at first, then there's no position for Sano (yeah yeah other than DH) and you could trade him for a good proven outfielder and change, and you might come out ahead. Blackmon or Reddick alone might not be a big enough ask but then I don't negotiate these things. Not sure what is catastrophic about that, but you could fill me in.
  8. well right---I'd ask for more than just Blackmon. But at least we know Blackmon can play good outfield and hit in the majors. There are lots of reasons Sano is not a guarantee. I wouldn't call them concerns but I'm not one to intoxicate myself on rankings like others.
  9. If the Twins are dead set in keeping Mauer at 1B and Plouffe at 3B, then give up Miguel Sano for Blackmon to play left and call it a day.
  10. I can try to answer this for you. Because Stauffer wasn't brought on as organizational depth. He was offered a major league contract with those generous incentives. For example. Two guys the Twins used extensively the past couple seasons were Jared Burton and Kevin Correia. This year, both have been pitching for minor league affiliates on minor league contracts signed in spring training, not in December. They have both bounced around multiple organizations already in 2015, pitching mostly in AAA. Neither has appeared in MLB yet this year. They have had good careers but they are organizational depth now. Yet the Twins relied on them heavily as important contributors just last year. We hit a nice little jackpot with Pelfrey, but the next test will be how the Twins negotiate with him after the season. Yes, young guys have made the Twins lineup in recent years and some have flourished, some not. It doesn't invalidate the point that this organization seriously overvalues decline phase veterans. That could be a problem going forward with so many prospects on the verge.
  11. Scoggins: 'Mientkiewicz said Polanco is the most ready for a promotion “without question.” He looks more comfortable at shortstop now after switching from second base.'
  12. I think Plouffe also had that footwork problem but maybe had a stronger arm. Interesting because Mientkiewicz was quoted by Scoggins as saying Polanco was major league ready. Maybe Polanco will end up back at 2B someday. Speaking of Mientkiewicz, has he made any other announcements about call-ups?
  13. Or if MLB really wanted to stick it to him, they could fine him $10,000 for every inch the pitch was outside the strike zone.
  14. He's signed through 2018. He's not getting traded. My hunch is he retires after 2018 but puts together at least one more great season. Also there should be at least one postseason by that time.
  15. I also see an irrational soft spot for older reclamation guys no one else wants. (Not that I consider anyone in their 30's old.) It's a nice personal quality but a huge problem for someone in Terry Ryan's position trying to field a competitive MLB team.
  16. Thanks for the link. I wasn't able to see it until know.
  17. Molitor was not using Stauffer at all. I would have preferred keeping the extra bat, but overall a net positive move.
  18. I do think Ryan has a blind spot when it comes to younger guys. I can't put my finger on it---it's just a feeling. One example is catcher. Like sconnie and others have pointed out, Suzuki has graded out overall as the worst catcher in the AL this year. He just doesn't have the same juice. That's not to trash Suzuki, but maybe rolling with Pinto and Herrmann last season wouldn't have cost us anything on the field, and would even have gotten those guys more experience for this year and next as they enter their prime playing years. Maybe a decade of an MVP catcher somehow twisted up the Twins evaluation process of that position, or something. And now Suzuki, like many predicted, seems really tired, and the Twins apparently don't feel there's anyone capable of spelling him. In addition, Suzuki is a guy who refuses to come out of the lineup. I don't know how this is going to play out.
  19. With the Sam Francisco Giants game on the radio?
  20. It looks like Plouffe has already been tinkering with his batting stance in those gifs, which are only two days apart. He typically bats more upright (I had to look at some MLB highlight videos) but is more hunched over in the Boston at bat. I think Plouffe will battle through it. Arcia had a streak like this last year. Speaking of...
