  1. Yes and thank you for not repeating the old cliche that he "needs to stay healthy." Meyer has actually been pretty healthy in his career except for the precautionary rest he took in 2013 for his shoulder. You cited his good ERA and BA-against when he was sent to the Bullpen. Then, in his final 10 appearances, going off memory, he had something like 22 innings, 25 base runners (half hits, half walks), 22 strikeouts, and a pretty good 30%+ strikeout rate. Maybe last September would have been a good time to have him up here, while he's pitching fairly well. My feeling is if Meyer pitches well in spring training the Twins really need to make a spot for him and use him right away in roles that are a little more important than first inning mop up duty (as was the case in his MLB debut). He was hailed as an ace when he was traded for. Too early to give up on him or pigeonhole him in the BP.
  2. By the time Mauer is eligible, he will probably be considered the guy who dominated his position between the Pudge years and Posey years, and probably not as good as either. And as Ted wrote, Mauer needs to turn around his hitting significantly and sustain it, or it will be a rough road.
  3. I'd love it if even 2 of those relievers were up by May 1st, but it doesn't seem realistic for even 2 of them, let alone all 4 of them. Who do they replace? I'd vote in order: Nolasco, Abad, Fein, and move May to the rotation (first option above all). To say nothing of Meyer, Pressly, O'Rourke, Berrios....
  4. UPDATE: Still not locked up.
  5. So there's no demand for college football or NCAA basketball?
  6. I agree, and this would likely have had the effect of eliminating a few of his Rochester starts and overall curtailing his innings, or I would have even called up Berrios in September for some spot appearances, similar to how Kepler was used. In any case we will see him soon enough.
  7. "front offices secure enough to attempt something like this..." All we are talking about is calling up a guy from the minors, right? I guess I am with Mike on this. Berrios threw 6 innings and 90 pitches in just about every Rochester start he made last year. I assumed all along that the Twins were in charge of what happens at their minor league affiliates, but maybe not.
  8. minor edit- the article cited the big 5 conferences not having any conference commissioners, not ADs as I mistyped it. I highly recommend the article. We can argue about how much race plays into the exploitation. I've got to think exploitation in college sports is totally untenable.
  9. You can't really separate the race issue, in my opinion. It's baked into the cake. If you squint real hard I bet you will see a relationship between black participation in big collegiate sports and the wealth extracted from these sports. Wealth that goes to white folks. For example, here's a fact cited in the article: 86% of all athletic directors are white, and the big conferences with the highest paid ADs have had no black ones.
  10. By that reasoning, Mike Pelfrey could have been a really GREAT signing
  11. And when you say there was an innings issue with Berrios, you are conveniently ignoring the fact that that was a problem completely of the Twins own making. Unless the Rochester manager was going rogue against explicit instructions, in which case I assume he is no longer employed with the organization.
  12. On the other hand, nobody anywhere has ever pulled out their smartphones to record video of a Mike Pelfrey or Kyle Lohse at bat.
  13. He could choose the Mike Pelfrey or Kyle Lohse route..... oh wait those guys are pitchers
  14. I think the person who comes out looking the best in this situation is Miguel Sano for being a good sport about it.
  15. I'm bullish on the bullpen. Your mileage may vary. I thought that the bullpen would improve for 2016 simply by doing nothing (namely, parting ways with Boyer, Duensing and maybe even Fien), but that's provided smart decisions are made going forward about the other guys. I'm optimistic about guys like Pressly, Burdi, and Meyer, if not on Day 1 then soon after. I'm partial to O'Rourke in a LOOGY role, big league slider and 38% K rate against lefties, though Molitor justifiably lost confidence in him after that Yankee series. Tonkin has a career ERA of 3.35 but its more like 12.94 in games I've watched him. Throw in Chargois and whoever else you want, and it gets even more crowded. I think there is enough in the system to give us good choices, but there is certainly room for a high quality sign or trade, too.
  16. Right, thanks. It's interesting how much this series is being talked about right now.
  17. Why was there a women being ordered to go to this property multiple times to photograph a trailer? Not watching the series but reading up on the case.
  18. Hey Hrbowski do you have this one? http://www.startribune.com/rare-appearance-of-ivory-gull-causes-stir-in-duluth/364432021/
  19. You can't see a scenario where Hillary wins the Democratic nomination?
  20. I think they are way too optimistic on their high end projection for Park (Kris Bryant? really?) though granted some of the Kris Bryant projections can get ridiculous themselves. Otherwise yeah interesting new site to check out.
  21. I was excluding lefties. His OPS versus righties in 2014 was .848 (in 268 PA). It was too generous to call his possible platooning "near full time" however, as I'd guess only about 60-75% of MLB starting pitching is right handed at any given time.
  22. Arcia certainly is below average and looks clumsy, and Sano is athletic, but I have a hard time believing Sano will be a *better* defensive outfielder than Arcia. Did we not see in 2014 that learning to play outfield is more than shagging fly balls during BP? Arcia (all while looking clumsy) has a strong, reasonably accurate arm, makes plays to his glove side, backs up bases, etc., he also makes the occasional out-of-range play. I have no confidence whatsoever that Sano will do any of that consistently. I don't think Sano's 100-150 OPS advantage over Arcia would compensate for any of Sano's future crimes in the outfield, though I admit Danny Santana improved quite a bit over the course of 2014. However, an .825-.875 OPS from a near full-time Arcia would be pretty good to have, with or without Sano. And I do grant you that Sano is long term more important to this franchise than Arcia, and the temporary outfield experiment worked with Miguel Cabrera just fine. My understanding is that Sano in the outfield is temporary until Plouffe is on another team. Part of my angst with Sano in the OF all goes back to general roster construction, too.
  23. the new problem with the "bad defense" argument against Arcia is that the Twins are now planning to use Sano in the outfield. Do you think Sano would be better than Arcia out there? I do not!
  24. I assume your strike zone and contact rate stats are the MLB stats? I'm not sure I want to see his minor league rate stats from last year. They are no doubt awful. So much to say about this guy. Platoon and stringer bell said it well, as did otwins, because I agree I just don't see what playing time Arcia gets other than as an occasional bench bat. Which is a shame because he can destroy right handed pitching. It's the one thing he does well, but best case, he can do it exceptionally well. By acquiring Park and Palka, on top of all the other guys striking out increasingly, the Twins can no longer cite strikeouts as a knock against Arcia. By planning to use Sano in the outfield, poor defense cannot be used against Arcia. Sure Arcia is emotional and excitable, but maturity comes with time. That's why I agree with your overall argument but disagree with your conclusion, as I think it's the burden of the Twins to capitalize on Arcia's single talent, rather than the opposite, of Arcia having to prove himself. He already has proved himself, in my opinion.
