  1. I will double down on this part of your comment. I would like to see Pinto get an honest shot. In 2014 he was Deduno's personal caddy, and 2015 started off with a concussion and went down hill from there. "His bat was never in question," we were told, and Suzuki and Pierzynski are already about the worst defensive catchers as measured by Fangraphs, so what do we have to lose? Free Pinto!
  2. I would be dead-set against any of the pitchers. A really big piece like Plouffe or Hicks would need to be traded before Span or Morneau make any sense. I also think Span can pull a multi-year contract from someone.
  3. AgreeAgree Agree, mostly Agree Agree Agree Couldn't agree more
  4. It's interesting that generally speaking, all the "old school" managers who were let go this offseason were replaced by youngish, analytic-minded guys,* and all the youngish guys were replaced by older guys with experience. If Gardy would be willing to reinvent himself a bit, and be willing to bring on some cyber sabermetric minded coaches, he could be a very appealing candidate. Or maybe after another year off, he will lose the itch to manage again. Time will tell. * granted, everyone should be somewhat analytical-minded at this point
  5. The Gophs played such a huge game. They drove down the field at the end of the 4th quarter, making huge plays. And then that.
  6. I'd almost take a regressed Escobar over a return-to-normal Santana in 2016. I'm guessing 2015 was an aberration for Santana and a lot of other young guys. EDIT: what stringer bell said. Santana will be fine as a utility guy and fill in if necessary, and maybe he does find his hitting stroke again in a part time role.
  7. Don't sugar coat it. Danny was starting shortstop through late July! It's also a little concerning that TD posters were all over this last offseason and guys like Parker and red muppet guy can apparently identify swing deficiencies that you wonder if coaches can identify---partly kidding I'm certain the Twins coaches are doing this at a higher level but maybe Bruno has a little of the Ted Williams coaching style in him: "just go out there and hit. It's easy." without being able to help guys understand. We need to figure out why our best hitters slump so bad as the season wears on. All said, good suggestion that maybe Santana is meant to be a center fielder, or for this team a 4th outfielder who only gets in a couple games a week. He improved a ton in Center through the course of 2014. The time to trade him was last offseason.
  8. In the end, I'm glad the Twins brought him back, and I hope we see him around in years to come.
  9. Tim Lincecum is under 6' feet, and he didn't even take care of himself off the field while winning those Cy Youngs. But he had stuff.
  10. I'd rather invest that free agent money in analytics and staff. I'd rather bring in additional staff with new approaches and new ideas. Make sure guys like Berrios, May, and Duffey are set up for success. Also, the Twins shouldn't write off Alex Meyer. It wasn't too long ago that Meyer was a fast track to the majors. Bringing in new staff and new ideas is a lot to ask of a conservative organization like the Twins, but it's a lot cheaper to develop your own guys than pay big money for other teams retreads.
  11. Dumb question. Can the Twins rework Mauer's contract? Maybe instead of his 23,23,23,0,0,0,0.., Mauer might agree to something like 18,13,8,3,3,3,3,3,3,... This gives the team payroll flexibility, and gives Mauer more flexibility should he decide to retire or take a reduced role at some point before (or after) the hard 2018 date.
  12. Ryan stepped in it when he said Mauer can hit .300 next year. What if he doesn't?
  13. Good catch. That might actually be a good idea for the Twins, to find a starting pitcher willing to pinch run for a DH (for example, Sano's DH-ing with a bad hammy). Situation depending, of course. That way you don't commit a Nunez or Santana to PR then possibly meet a poor matchup later in game, causing you to lose an out to a poor match up, or lose the player to a pinch hitter.
  14. The worst part of the NL west is competing against the Dodgers and Giants every year.
  15. Detroit will regret bringing Ausmus back but I think it's too big a risk to sit out another season and hope that Detroit job opens back up (I believe the rumors that Gardy was headed there until Avila suddenly changed his mind). I want Gardy to go to Washington. But San Diego might move fast and make him an offer.
  16. Good question. You could easily see Hicks becoming a steadier presence now that the worst is behind him, or after going into a slump he might completely lose interest again. Maybe platooning is the right balance.
  17. Arcia actually plays better in right field. He makes the running or sliding catch towards the foul line better than Hunter, though probably not an overall defensive upgrade over Hunter. I mean Hicks.
  18. Next season I expect to see guys like Pressley, Meyer, and Burdi, get significant opportunities, and hopefully we will get caught up with the rest of the league.
  19. Not sure why you keep posting this question! Twins pitchers all season long talked about how the organization wants them to use six pitches to get two ground outs, instead of six pitches to get one strikeout. So much more efficient that way! It is a fine, fine idea which is completely removed from reality, because Twins pitchers do not have velocity, their pitches are easier to foul off or take for balls, so the end result is they one groundout on six pitches. EDIT yes I realize the average pitches per plate appearance is closer to 4, but I'm just reporting what guys like Gibson and Perkins have been saying. Also, I think pitching is more of a head game than numbers game, see: King Felix, etc, but that's just me.
  20. Is Plouffe's .220 average against fastballs (thanks for letting the cat out of the bag, by the way) something to be concerned about, or just an anomaly? It seems like one of those stats that's so obvious that maybe the opposing pitching coaches might not see it. "Their #5 hitter can't hit fastballs" is not something you would expect to hear very often.
  21. A short blurb from 1909 that ran on page 4 of the Princeton Union of Princeton Minn: ________________________ ."To show that Japan is making rapid progress. in. the. American. game. of baseball. it is only necessary to state that. in. 22. I'd almost rather have a rotation of Gibson, Meyer, Berrios, Duffey, Nolasco--the five guys you left off* That's why I'm not sure Ryan should have his sights set on a starting pitcher, unless he's truly of the Johnny Cueto ace type of pitcher. I was even a little stunned when Ervin Santana was signed. *not really, but it sounded good
  23. If Ryan signs a front line starting pitcher as you suggest he might, then what do you think the rotation would look like in 2016, then 2017?
  24. It was definitely a struggle to get hits at the end. We now know Dozier wasn't at 100% unfortunately. I'm not ready to call out Bruno but I think all the coaches and data guys need to get their heads together and figure out the next step. When your batting average leaders are Eduardo Nunez and Oswaldo Arcia, you might have a problem!
