  1. Speaking of trading for Taylor to be Buxton's caddy, and signing Gallo, who is basically just a guy, add the 2023 salaries of Taylor and Gallo together and it's more than Buxton's base salary in 2023. Think about it.
  2. Frankly I was surprised Team Fiji Islands got past Team Afghanistan
  3. I'm just glancing at Fangraphs, and comparing Farmer, Solano, Arraez, and Polanco, at second base. No doubt the Farmer and Solano signings were highly praised on this website, but I'm not convinced either of those players, glancing at their profiles, is any better than Luis Arraez at fielding that position. In that sense, the Farmer and Solano signings just look like ordinary free agents that would be signed in any other year, not sneaky signings designed to get a leg up on other teams with the new rules in mind.
  4. footwork, cutoffs, developing a rapport with the pitcher and catcher on pickoffs, with the pitcher and second baseman on ground balls... some guys can make it look like a cakewalk if they are not tested for a while. Here is one example of what getting your wires crossed up, looks like:
  5. My speculation is that Polanco is going to be extra cautious with his knee, and will miss too much playing time this spring to be ready for Opening Day. The interesting angle is whether his vesting option is also a club option; absent a confirmation from one of the two sides, do we really know for sure? If Polanco were to become a free agent after 2023, would he fetch more than $22 million over the next two seasons? He probably thinks so and I do too. Polanco would have to miss about a month for 2024 not to vest, and even if he comes back within 30 games of the start of the season, say before May, he would be a candidate for days off (load management) as the season goes on. If Polanco is not ready for the start of the season, that would put the Opening Day infield at something like: 1B Miranda, 2B Solano, SS Correa, 3B Farmer. So the so-called infield depth would already be pressed into action.
  6. I think it's fair to start asking for reports on Buxton and Polanco at this point. Neither were in the lineup today and tomorrow is an off day. The season starts three weeks from Thursday.
  7. There were no factual arguments being made about Eddie Matthews and there was no sworn claim that he ever played only one position and was never moved for any reason. Here was all that was said: "Can you imagine Willie Mays playing anywhere but CF? Eddie Mathews any place but 3B?" Let's drop it.
  8. but not mad hits like he was Rod Carew..
  9. One of the old scouting rules of thumb was, never draft a short right-handed pitcher directly out of high school (i think i read that in money ball)
  10. Point taken, but age is on his side here.
  11. Kudos to Twins Daily for shaking up the rankings! Raya looks like a guy to watch. Hits per 9 is a number I like to check to get a basic idea on guys I'm not familiar with, and that checks out really well with Raya. Then yeah the good analysis by @Hoze 🙂 and yeah the physical profile and even the windup comparison to Berrios is hard to miss.
  12. I would like to see Do-Hyoung Park on Jeopardy against Mike Gelfand and that meteorologist guy who just won a bunch of money, answering all those questions about meteors.
  13. Good deep dive into some pitch level numbers. The statline of his debut in Detroit looks ok, but Woods Richardson almost got knocked out in the first inning in that game. You could say he settled down after that, but he also continued to give up a lot of hard contact. I will stay out of the prediction business, but I am confident predicting he won't be as good as Berrios.
  14. No, it was in games, and no, I'm thinking it does not happen routinely. So yeah that would be my question, too. I had only read he tops out around 90. What happened to the velo? He might have a better chance to stick if he can get back into the mid to upper 90s
  15. Kirilloff had multiple cortisone shots and a wrist surgery already, prior to the surgery in 2022. It's unfortunate for him, for sure, and for fans and the team. If I recall, one of those cortisone shots was while in the minors so that might have been a warning flag. But you could also say that it went from minor concern heading into 2021 to career-threatening concern in a blink of an eye. He might have had some trade value prior to August 2022, but at this point I would say not. I don't think the front office needs to come out point blank and say, "We will be lucky to get much from Kirilloff anymore, from this point going forward." That would be worst case, obviously, and I think that can be left unsaid. My own hope for Kirilloff is that he has some good stretches at DH. I don't know if catching baseballs affects his wrist or not or if keeping him out of the field would save some aggravation. You hate to ask a player to play through that pain.
  16. Agree - I felt like it took Joe Mauer about a year and a half to become a really good first baseman. Also, thank you for becoming a Twins Daily caretaker!! If others haven't yet, click here
  17. On the contrary, the Mets had no problem telling national reporters what their secondary offer to Correa was after the Mets rejected Correa's ankle scans. To translate this into Corporatespeak: "Dear Twins or other mystery team, here is our new offer to Correa: 6/157. Please beat it and release us from this negotiation." Transparent as a sunny day. The Twins not only beat that offer (for a player no other team really wanted that much), they beat it by 25%. It certainly is.
  18. Very nice article. I was in the game thread the night Arraez broke up Dylan Cease’s no-hitter, and if I recall, there was some brief back-and-forth about whether Cease should pitch around Arraez and walk him, or earn the no-hitter by retiring Arraez for the last out. Arraez being Arraez, lofts a single to right center. This is a huge, huge loss, and it’s impact will be both seen in the standings and also felt in the hearts of fans who care more about the team than the cold calculation of player values generated by a computer program somewhere.
  19. Seeing this pic in my feed of a young Burrow in a GOAT jersey tips the scales, and I’m pulling for the Bengals.
  20. This gossip on Arraez's knees reminds me of the conversations we had about Bailey Ober's fastball. Or maybe it was Joe Ryan's. So Joe Ryan throws a 90-91mph fastball, but the Twins coaching staff can usually add a couple miles per hour to that, so really it's more like 92-93, but actually his deceptive delivery has the effect of adding a couple more mph, so really it's more like 94-95, and when he really wants to crank it up, he can add another couple mph on top of that. So basically it's more like a 96-97mph fastball than 90-91. If this thread goes long enough, we can get Arraez into knee replacement surgery and out of baseball in no time!
  21. And then that last play lol
