    I expect them to give a qualifying offer to two of those pitchers, perhaps all three. One of them might accept it.

    Winder and Henriquez are injured. Megill and Dobnak (and Sanchez) have been terrible. Coulombe and Hoffman are nothing special but they're not injured or terrible.

    They could use many of those guys. They wouldn't win games but they could use them.

    I have been impressed by Alcala so far. He looks healthy and effective.

    They're not going to bring up Ober, Varland or SWR to be a 1 inning reliever. It's a bad idea and they've said they won't do it. They need all three stretched out as starters or they're just trading their lack of depth in the bullpen for lack of depth in the rotation. Winder is (predictably) injured.

    Coulombe was one of the guys they brought in this offseason to compete for a spot. Hoffman was another. None of them apparently turned out to be anything special. It sucks to lose Coulombe because the options in AAA are even worse. The front office has been obsessed with acquiring depth everywhere except the bullpen.

    I'm not frustrated that Coulombe is gone. I'm frustrated that they somehow couldn't find someone better than Cole Sands to make the roster.

    Willi Castro has been better than I expected. He might have a little upside he hasn't shown before.

    You think last year's bullpen was good? Cole Sands might develop into a good reliever but there's no reason to put him on the big league roster on scholarship.

    I read the article. That is definitely a list of names. They will need to pay attention to the waiver wire.

    I'm not seeing a lot of good bullpen arms in the minors. If Cole Sands is actually making this bullpen the depth is very thin.

    This is where revenue sharing is broken. The way to sure profit in MLB is to field a minimum salary roster. No need to draw any fans at all to the ballpark.

    But you don't intentionally turn a 90 win team into an 83 win team in order to improve your wins-per-dollar. The Twins have a budget but they should still be looking to maximize wins based on their budget, not trying to save $20M if it means giving up a chance at a pennant.

    It's really easy to give away the best player in a trade and get better "value" in return. Value is performance/cost. The Yankees pay for performance, they aren't looking strictly for value. There is no "wins per dollar" pennant, just one for the most wins.

    So, now you're defining "value" as running a payroll above the luxury tax to get the most talent as possible each season? That just re-defines "value" as "wins".

    It's actually Riverbrian's argument, not mine. Why would the Twins trade Caleb Thielbar in March for "future value" if they want to win games in 2023? Of course you trade present players for future value in seasons where you failed to compete or never intended to compete (rebuilding years). The Twins are trying to win games NOW. If your front office's goal is only to "maximize future value" then you'll perpetually have a full farm system and a mediocre major league team. You'll win the most games per dollar spent but some other team will beat you because they're not trying to run their team on the cheap.

    The Yankees have reached the playoffs 8 of the last 11 years. Winning Record 31 seasons in a row. Guess they're just better at finding future value than Oakland.

    And now he's gone. By your logic they should have traded him last year for future value rather than using him to win 101 games.

    That's why Oakland has won so many World Series recently.

    There aren't any pennants awarded for "most future value acquired".

    Since I basically only care about baseball this is great for me. I don't think the Twins will have any bids from cable channels for their upcoming TV rights, especially because streaming rights will not be part of the contract. I'm optimistic this means they will find an over the air broadcast partner (Channel 45?) for some games and rely on streaming for the rest.

    I think the Twins best 3 infielders are Correa, Lewis and Lee which pushes Miranda and/or Julien to 1B and Martin to the outfield. I'm not sure Correa is going to be a better SS than Lee for much longer. I need to see some reps but usually you bet on the young player at SS and move the older player to 3B. Lee might start at 2B - he has range and he's smart - because Lewis and his twice repaired ACL makes more sense at 3B. These are good problems to have.
