  1. Off day Monday so a decision by Tuesday's game.
  2. Mays should have been the MVP in 54, 55, 57, 58, 60, 62, 64 and 65
  3. I love the Antiques Roadshow episode where they brought in his Millers jersey https://www.pbs.org/video/antiques-roadshow-appraisal-1951-willie-mays-minneapolis-millers-jersey/
  4. There is plenty of room in the rotation in St. Paul. Move up Zebby so they don't have to piggy back the starting pitchers in Wichita.
  5. There's a lot more depth in the outfield. The dropoff from Lee to Diego Castillo is pretty steep. If Wallner fails again they have more options (Kirilloff, Keirsey, Emma, Will Holland). I think Wallner would have come up for Kepler except the Athletics are throwing LH starters and Wallner still can't hit lefties. Kepler is going to sit until the Diamondbacks series. If he's still not right on the 25th Wallner will get the call.
  6. People are clamoring for Brooks Lee but it's going to be quite difficult for him to come up and outproduce Willi Castro at 2B. It's June 22 and Farmer has played in 8 games this month with a .952 OPS. Now that Lewis is back, Farmer is only playing part-time and he's producing in that role. The infield is not the problem right now, in fact the infield is this team's strength. The pitching is the problem.
  7. Trades like this have the best average ROI at the deadline. They cost almost nothing and often the player's underlying talent helps them bounce back for the rest of the season despite bad results to start the season.
  8. His fastball movement and location is not the same and he's working with the pitching coaches to get it back. He's not injured. I think it is fixable but the question is how long.
  9. Willi Castro has been quite good this year. Brooks Lee is unlikely to post an OPS+ > 125.
  10. A Ford Tempo was a compact car built in the 1980s.
  11. Brooks Lee is a long-term play, not a deadline addition to the lineup. He's most likely going to be inconsistent as weaknesses get exposed and he makes adjustments.
  12. I don't think that is the plan or they would have Brooks Lee actually playing 2B in the minor leagues. I wouldn't want to bring up a rookie to start in the majors at a position they have never played in the minors at all. Lee would also have to be really good to be a better option than Willi Castro. Castro has been very good at 2B. There really aren't that many open spots on the roster. Farmer is barely getting any playing time.
  13. They released Castillo to bring Varland up for the spot start. They added Jackson because they needed another warm body. They could have re-signed Castillo and added him back (he's a free agent) but chose not to. I expect them to fill that 40th roster spot with a waiver claim soon.
  14. Actually, the metrics show Vazquez as one of the top defensive catchers in baseball, good enough to keep him around replacement level despite his lousy bat.
  15. And yet they're basically league average in allowing stolen bases and 20th in stealing bases. It's not a big part of their game but that's true for most MLB teams.
  16. Oh, and last season MLB stole 0.72 bases per game. The Twins are pretty much average at controlling the running game. Tampa is 6th in steals per game at 0.96.
  17. I ran the numbers after today. Jeffers is at 19% CS% and Vazquez is 21% - league average is 22%. If Jeffers throws out his next baserunner they're even. Jeffers has allowed 0.066 stolen bases per inning (0.6 per 9 innings) and Vazquez is at 0.089 stolen bases per inning (0.8 per 9 innings).
  18. I was able to watch the Saints game yesterday. The most exciting thing about Lee hitting three doubles is he did it against lefthanded pitching. He hit two off the starter Hurter and one off the reliever Lucas. In contrast, Wallner looked completely lost against Hurter and missed a center cut fastball from Lucas. There is an easy way to get Wallner out right now - use a lefthanded pitcher. Lee looked very locked in as a RHB. Unfortunately, he looked like he had trouble making adjustments as a switch hitter during the game and gave away his last at-bat from the left side of the plate. Switch hitting is hard and it will slow down his development but the payoff should be worth the investment.
  19. Utility players and second basemen don't make the big bucks. Offer him a 3 year $18M deal and see if he accepts. He's probably worth $30-40M over the next 3 seasons.
  20. Ichiro was a gold glove right fielder, stole 509 bases and hit 96 triples. Not close to the same thing.
  21. It is against AAA pitchers. I've been watching the game today and Lee has hit Toledo's lefty starter quite well. Wallner, on the other hand, looks completely lost.
