  1. I have been watching baseball on TV but it's usually the MLB.tv free game of the day, Apple game on Friday or the nationally broadcast games on the weekend. I don't mind substituting any MLB game for the Twins game.
  2. I'm actually impressed by how much productivity Baldelli and Maki have been able to squeeze out of the 3 rookies in the rotation. That has been the silver lining of September.
  3. I believe they call this "counting your chickens before they have hatched". Jax is an elite reliever.
  4. They really want to have a spot locked up before the final game so they can bump Ober to Game 1. Then you would see Ober / Lopez / rookie.
  5. Which I hope means Matthews / Festa / Woods-Richardson instead of the actual bullpen.
  6. It is really weird to go from "Let's give the kid a save chance" to "Let's dump him for Brent Headrick" in a week.
  7. If I'm re-doing Saturday with hindsight I use Irvin in Game 1, which was already lost, and save Headrick for the situation where they used Irvin in Game 2. Irvin is best used soaking up innings when the game is already over but they decided to use Headrick in that situation instead. This means Baldelli trusts Headrick even less than he trusts Cole Irvin. The big problem is it's hard to win games with 6 "low leverage" relievers in your bullpen and only 3 guys you can trust when you have a lead. That's a recipe for a .333 winning percentage.
  8. Yes, by some miracle the coaching staff coaxed 4-2/3 scoreless innings out of Zebby Matthews. How long do you want them to press their luck?
  9. Sands was terrible on Sunday. In theory Sands was a decent choice. In practice he was bad.
  10. Austin Martin rates as one of the worst fielding CF used in the major leagues this season.
  11. Either Jax or Duran would have to get MORE than 6 outs to finish that game. There were 13 outs to get. We have already seen it blow up trying to get multiple innings out of Jax and Duran this September.
  12. If you don't have a large enough sample size for an individual pitcher then you assume the base rate (use the data from all pitchers). The base rate says pitchers get worse the 3rd time through the order.
  13. Those 3 pitchers usually get 9 outs. It is quite unlikely they can each go more than one inning and keep the game scoreless. In fact, Sands was terrible in his chance to keep the game close, so with the benefit of seeing what happened in the game he was an awful choice. Do you think Jax and Duran could get 13 outs and keep the Red Sox off the board? Are you prepared to do ask Jax and Duran to do that every game from here on out? What happens if either one gets injured because you're suddenly asking them to pitch multiple innings at the end of the season? Would you defend Rocco's decision to throw away an entire future season due to injury rehab in a desperate move to try to win this one game against the Red Sox?
  14. 5 wins is the maximum. That is a pretty big deal and I'm fine with trying someone else but let's not get delusional and pretend that Rocco mismanaged the clear World Series favorite into fighting for a wild card berth. Also, ask yourself this question. Could this front office correctly identify and hire a truly great manager? The Twins have never really had one in the history of the franchise. TK was good, but he's not Bochy.
  15. It is frowned upon (for good reason) to walk a guy to bring the go-ahead run to the plate. That's what Irvin did and it went poorly for him.
  16. This is perfect hindsight. Zebby Matthews has almost no track record of success in the majors. Irvin has managed to stay in the majors for six seasons. Every option Rocco had was a bad option - Leave in the struggling rookie - Go with one of the players cut by another team (Irvin, Tonkin) - Go with your own struggling reliever (Thielbar, Varland) - Go with someone who has already pitched earlier that day (Headrick, Blewett) - Go to your late inning pitcher in the 4th inning (Sands, Jax, Duran) which will force you to use one of your other crappy options in the late innings if the move is successful
  17. The manager does not have nearly as much impact on wins and losses as some people think. Based on the complaints here about Rocco I would conclude that those posters believe this is a 110 win team that Rocco mismanaged into being an 81+ win team. I don't think this is a 110 win team. I don't even think this is a 90 win team. Based on talent they're an 80-85 win team. Maybe a great manager could coax another 5 wins out of the team but a truly bad manager could have cost them at least 5 more losses.
  18. The manager's impact is "hope your reliever gets lucky". You can't make chicken salad out of this bullpen. Honestly, I'm surprised that Zebby pitched as well has he did.
  19. Keirsey would be behind Emmanuel Rodriguez on my depth chart. He's not a starting outfielder, he's minor league depth. Unfortunately, Buxton's injury history means you will need to use the minor league depth at some point in the season.
  20. There isn't anyone who is likely to take the job away from him in the minors. My guess is we'll see some combination of Emmanuel Rodriguez and Keirsey Jr play 60-100 games there next year anyway since Buxton can never play a full season.
  21. And no reason to burn options before it's necessary. Eeles doesn't have to be added to the 40-man until December of 2026.
  22. Matthews - the rookie who was struggling Sands - the pitcher who was terrible in that exact same game and was probably penciled in for the 7th inning. Varland - the young pitcher who has been bad all season Thielbar - the old pitcher who has been bad all season There's nothing Baldelli can't be second-guessed on. I think he was the one handed a **** sandwich with the current bullpen.
  23. So, who exactly is the magic pitcher the Twins had available who would have saved that game? Do you go to Jax or Duran in the 5th inning and hope they can pitch 2-3 innings each? Do you go with Sands - oops, he gave up 3 runs and recorded one out in that same game. Baldelli had the entire bullpen available, but it only has 2 good pitchers in it and that isn't enough to cover 5 innings.
  24. Is this a good team that Rocco ruined or a below average team that Rocco has kept together? If Rocco had lost the clubhouse the games versus the Guardians wouldn't have been close and they don't win that extra inning game against Boston. He has a rotation full of rookies and a bullpen full of castoffs from other teams.
  25. I wouldn't turn it over to Irvin, Blewett, Tonkin, Thielbar or Varland - whoops, that's everyone Rocco had available to choose from in the 5th inning.
