  1. Agreed, also to add, need to use the low leverage innings to develop middle relievers and middle relief innings to develop late inning relievers. At 33, there isn’t much ceiling left… better to give those innings to pitchers with a higher ceiling
  2. How is history that old relevant to Maki and Baldelli? I think they should convert Canterino to a reliever and am optimistic they’ll succeed, but Rogers is the only pitcher in the list converted during this FO’s tenure.
  3. This! Additionally, he’s 26 and has only pitched a bit of AA. There’s only so many bullets to be fired and he’s shot a bunch in the minors and college. Don’t let perfection be the enemy of the good.
  4. She’s done play by play for the Twins in Spring Training and is awesome! better call mama! https://m.facebook.com/BallySportsNorth/videos/cj-cron-hits-a-solo-home-run/362666007908627/
  5. If he’s reached his ceiling and doesn’t regress, a league average hitting, very good baserunning, aggressive base stealing, solid utility infielder across the infield and outfield is very, very valuable. the Twins signed Marwin Gonzalez 2 years 21m. Eduardo escobar got 2 years 20m… Willi Castro is still in arbitration. He gets to his league average bat differently than Marwin did and Escobar does, but still, super valuable. Especially to the Twins who are very heavy in 3 true outcomes hitters. career 2023 one season does not a trend make, but it’s a good start!
  6. I hope you are right, but fielding data is always very small sample size. I’m skeptical 2023 may have been a complete mirage. Willi was a revelation in 2023, I’m hopeful and rooting for him to continue, but gotta temper expectations a bit.
  7. The QO, being he’s certain to accept it, has to be tendered by 5 days after the WS, is not a fall back, it’s plan A. Also, 20M might be the total free agent budget this offseason christmas shopping done by 11/9 and you can only afford one present.
  8. They have to QO Maeda by 5 days after the World Series. He will absolutely sign that, and so your pitching shopping list is done, 5 days after the WS in a massive over-pay. A massive over-pay to get Maeda on a 1 year isn’t all bad in isolation. I don’t see Maeda as better than Ryan, Paddack, Ober, so signing him would be only to push Varland to the bullpen/AAA. Here’s the rub, I don’t want a 36 year old on a multi year deal, but they’re also losing out on 5th starter development innings for Varland who’s 25 years old and at a career intersection… unless the FO has already decided that Varland is a reliever and the decision has been made already. If he’s a reliever, then a 3rd to 5th starter makes sense because the next crop isn’t pushing the MLB roster quite yet. I don’t think the FO has decided Varland is a reliever, so I think they should aim higher or roll with what they got,
  9. Dobnak was hurt in 2022, he pitched in 11 games. Also, The International League is very hitter friendly. Minor league stats are harder to come by, but context for his 5 era and 1.7 whip might be helpful. Spencer Strider had 281 MLB strikeouts, and rookie hitters coming up to the bigs strikeout a ton. It’s a hitters league.
  10. He was DFA’d and accepted a AAA assignment. It’s dead until/if he’s added to the 40 man. He won’t be added in the off-season, not until they need him. How is a $1.9m annual average salary a bad contract? Injuries happen, slow recoveries happen. There is a good chance he works his way into a role this year.
  11. To that end, I wonder if there’s some wrangling with the league office on coordinating an MLB streaming service. With Bally hanging by a thread, close to half the teams are close to coming out of their contract.
  12. But 5.75 innings per start and being top 5 rotation innings pitched doesn’t fit the narrative!
  13. Danny Serafini former Twin arrested for suspicion of homicide and attempted murder
  14. I’m just here because I found the title amusing. Bravo!
  15. I think the uncertainty of the TV deal would be a reason why the FO makes a sell high trade. the contract negotiations could drag out to very close to opening day to see who blinks, maybe even a 1 or 2 year deal as a stopgap. If the FO can bring back the right pieces, they could field a competitive team and reduce payroll. I hate to trade away Jeffers or Castro, they filled important roles for the ‘23 team, but you gotta give value to get value, and payroll might be crunched in ‘24.
  16. Agreed, but “Effectiveness” wasn’t the question, it was if it were possible.
  17. I would argue it’s not inaccurate, it’s incomplete. We don’t know if they can’t fix it, but they haven’t so far after several tries.
  18. And could also receive revenue sharing again depending on where that video broadcasting contract comes in, so the worst case shrinks from there. still, a $10M haircut would hurt a lot. what we don’t really know is, who are the competitors to buy the contract. It’s wide open including MLB and Pohlad companies, as well as other RSNs, streaming platforms, and maybe local TV. It might be a revenue increase, because the legacy contract had some legacy ownership stake in FSN. make no mistake, projected revenue will have a direct impact on spend next year and going to the ALDS with projectable upside to continue post seasons in the future absolutely helps that revenue upside too.
  19. Exactly As a catcher, Joe Mauer played 133 games per year. After, 134, but made a position change. as a CFer, Buck has played 84 games per year (average leaving out rookie and ‘20). Why would we expect Buxton to play more games after surgery than before? he’s had a couple tremendous hitting seasons, but overall averaged 105 wRC+. It might be fair to expect better than 105 wRC+ due to recency bias, but probably not realistic to expect him to be anywhere close to the 140 of his best season. sure 2023 is likely a low point in his career, but it’s not a deep hole in his chart relative to his career. It’s average, so expecting significantly more isn’t realistic at all
  20. Yup, I think I had 85 wins, and 87 is close enough. Winning a playoff series exceeded my expectations
