    heavily incentive based contracts are unusual for top end players. The MLBPA is very powerful and the owners bring in tons of tv money. The players association and players agents know it and do a very good job of taking advantage. I for one am very thankful that only 10-15% of my income is incentive based. I choose a stable salary at the loss of top end opportunity. My brother in law is in sales and his rate is flipped, 10-15% salary. He has years where he makes twice what I do. He also has years where he makes less than half. I couldn’t handle that kind of uncertainty.

    I disagree with your argument because it’s not relative in context to his peers. He never goes 9 innings so k9 isn’t relevant. No one goes 9 innings, it’s a rate. His k9 is in the top 12 for all starting pitchers. That’s relative to other alternatives who only one guy on that same plane is available and he’s going to go for similar money. If the alternative is wait for next year, it’s always wait for next year. We’ve heard that for 20 years. Next year is less certain than right now. There are no guarantees. I give you a lot of credit for your conviction and well written arguments.

    agreed, pre arb, arb, and free agents should be viewed through different lenses. How can you possibly compare relative value between players who freely negotiate their contract and players who have their salary handed to them arbitrarily? I do like the calculation, but the criteria for sample selection needs work. And yeah, these articles are always on the side of management. Why we side on the “super rich” over the “just rich” i’ll never get. I’m most irked over minor leaguers. Most of them never make the bigs and make peanuts.

The article is about excess value of actual contract compared to WAR. The part i’d like to point out is Scherzer’s honorable mention at the bottom. He’s outperforming a 22 mil salary according to the metric. Just cuz it’s big money doesn’t mean it’s going to be a bad value:

    if I were in Darvish’s shoes I’d be less worried about AAV and more worried about total and length. At 32, most likely this is his last multi year contract of his career. He needs to maximize total and length.

    could be his compatriots in the players union might be giving him a little more urging to make a decision in order to take some leverage away from the teams for the other starters on the market.

They cost nothing additional and have all the same question marks in terms of injuries and consistency as Cobb and Lynn Lynn has been facing a pitcher every 9th batter, they’re all coming out relatively the same in the wash. Go big with Darvish, trade for Archer or Erasmo Ramirez, or gamble with In house options. Romero or Gonsalves or Hughes or May; someone will stick. Don’t get sucked in to another TR special 4 year 60(then 50) mil deal for a guy that doesn’t move the needle.

    I think number 5 should be reworded Barring acquisition, Berrios is counted upon to be the number 1 starter. Santana will regress, that has always been a given. Will Berrios rise to the occasion? Take another big step forward?

    signing amount affects the comp pick going to the team who lost the player. It does not affect the team signing said player. This strategy would be great if the teams affected were the Yankees and Dodgers! Im less excited to thumb my nose at St Louis or Tampa Bay. I’m in the Darvish or trade mode. Arrieta is just so risky, Cobb and Lynn aren’t that much better than the Nolasco types, which is to say Gibson and Mejia already fit that mold.... somewhat anyways.... maybe Levine finds that improvement internally with Gonsalves, Romero or May.

    Gibson turns that corner every season. 2017 fell right in line with his career. I do very much believe it would benefit the team for a mediocre starter soak up meaningless innings so that Hildenberger and Reed are available to pitch meaningful innings as well as Rogers and Pressly, et al. There’s a ton of value to avoid the bullpen games.

    sorry I keep coming back to this post. There’s so many things going on here. Do agree w/ this clause. Go spend the free agency dollars, or make a wise trade trade for an Archer type if you can swing the right deal. My ideal scenario Sign Darvish Santana Berrios Romero Mejia Gibson long man If not Darvish, Cobb slotting in #3 behind Berrios

    as I see it, the long man is critical to avoiding long losing streaks. I’d like to see Gibson as the long man, but don’t feel strong.

    How many MLB 4-5 starters exceed 160 innings in a year? Skip a start in June, one in Aug, and always the normal all star break hoopla, and your problem is solved

    You and I have a different opinion of Gibson and Mejia I believe this decision is more about controllability and/or player readiness. I gotta think Romero or Gonsalves have the physical abilities to win more MLB games than either Gibson or Mejia, but don't yet hve the maturity to deal with the setbacks to recover and grow on a continud trajectory, yet... soon...

    I'd be hesitant to throw a guy to the fire too early, but generally would rather give the 4-5 spots in the rotation to Romero and Gonsalves than Gibson and Mejia. I can't imagine both Romero and Gonsalves are "ready" - maybe, maybe not. Mejoia could start the season in AAA on the Rochester express with Romero or Gonsalves as the 4th spot, Gibson number 5 (so the rookie gets the consistent every time thru rotation starts).
