  1. not that I am a fan of how these races shook out, but if no one "won" the position, do you put in a rookie who isn't ready or a veteran who can't get any worse. I hope that Trevor May, Alex Meyer, Aaron Hicks and Eddie Rosario all earn their way onto the big league roster this season. Disappointed? Sure. Surprised? No. Maybe Milone and Robinson/Schafer will earn enough value to be trade bait. It's a long season, this isn't even the beginning yet
  2. i like the optimistic idea of Rosario, but what if he struggles? How will the Twins respond? Quick hook to triple a, or ride it out like Hicks, or somewhere in between? There's a lot of uncertainty there, but the upside of having Rosario with some good MLB experience' being the CF for as long as needed and being the defensive replacement for Arcia in the late innings, or moving Arcia to DH or RF and taking over left when Buxton comes up is really appealing. Realistically, Rosario needs more minor league seasoning before becoming a regular big leaguer.
  3. whom do you suppose pays John to write? Maybe I shouldn't post this... But shhh... Don't tell.... I get this service for free! I don't know if John gets paid to write, it doesn't matter, I just wouldn't make that assumption, unless he works for say NBC sports hardball talk, or something. Personally I would agree, reading is hard, and one of the few things harder is writing, which is why I rarely blog and my posts are terrible but I appreciate all of the hard work by all of the TD contributors and community' especially during spring training. Some spring soon I'll take John's advice and make the trip.
  4. this is how it should have happened, but it didn't. 2014 wasn't his first season in the majors, it was his second. His hitting was aweful but can be improved. His fielding was awful that can be improved too. So you have a prospect who is an awful hitter and poor fielder(-10.9 UZR per Fangraphs) on the big league club. That's doing him and the club a huge favor. Are Robinson/Schaffer batter? Maybe fielding wise, but if they struggle, who cares they aren't prospects. All of Hicks' issues might be fixable but is the big leagues the place to do it?
  5. im no expert, but Ken Rosenthal says that sign and trades are still banned. The point is to keep teams from accumulating sandwich picks via sign and trade deals. In this case if sign and trades were legal the Twins could trade Stauffer to San Diego, San Diego could then have Stauffer and the Comp pick they received for Stauffer (assuming qualifying offer was made) and the Twins would get whatever the agreed upon tradeable asset, say AAAA CFer. It would drive up the instances of qualifying offers and collusion.
  6. ditto, maybe I thought Berrios was knocking on the big league door a little louder than he actually was, but I figured as a result Moli would want a longer look at him.
  7. agreed, Mauer's productivity is based on OBP, it's just obp based more on hitting than walks, hence the BABIP statement. Mauer for the first time since Morneau pre concussion, has good power hitters batting behind him. No pitcher will give him as many free passes as he previously received. Mauer is a good player, even after his worst season as a pro, he's still one of the best players on the team, just more of a Wade Boggs than a Paul Konerko. As for Dozier, he does need to improve, BA is one of the areas, power comes and goes, but BA for a high strikeout guy can help bridge power gaps. I am just less worried about it because Dozier has shown more home run ability. Ask me again in September when Dozier has come back down to earth? I'll be calling for Polanco to take over at 2nd and call TR to question why he didn't sell Dozier high. I'm ok with being a hypocrite.
  8. To Thrylos' point - I'm much more worried about Mauer's batting average than Dozier's. It's all based on BABIP. If Dozier can continue his power stroke combined with high OBP, I'm ok with a bit lower BA because so many of Dozier's hits aren't in play relative to Mauer. On the other hand, Mauer's hitting is so predicated on singles and doubles, he's going to be challenged more, especially against teams like the Royals who are built for defense. Mauer needs a high batting average to maintain productivity.
  9. Thanks Lindsey - Really great perspective on the Twins situation from someone who's been there done that.
  10. id be ok with a Schafer/Robinson platoon. I hope Robinson finds a way on to this team as a late inning defensive sub. Outfield will be brutal again
  11. i too tend to lean in the challenge prospects camp, but in this case I also agree with Shane that Hicks was promoted too quickly, and worse than that, it wasn't corrected for any length of time. Maybe it was the right time to challenge him, but when he didn't rise to the occasion, send him to AAA for longer than a month, and sooner than a year and a half later. A month or two in AAA when your head is that screwy isn't enough, and it doesn't appear to be intact yet. I hope Hicks can be a productive big leaguer, but I don't think it will be the begininning of the 2015 season. Maybe a September 2015 call up?
  12. http://m.twins.mlb.com/news/article/112097980/minnesota-twins-outfielder-aaron-hicks-hicks-benched-after-losing-track-of-outs-on-bases Hicks already benched by Moli - here's hoping it works
  13. hes 21 and has been playing 3rd for 2 years, you'll have that. Inconsistency is the bane of youth.
  14. man is that awesome! And the play by play from MLB network. Stunning! Makes me really happy they don't carry regular season, but man I hope Sano sticks at 3rd. To have the stick to go with good enough up to excellent 3rdbase fielding, dang
  15. its applicable here assuming Molitor and Ryan won't repeat mistakes, it means an improved outfield.
  16. i started out refuting this with "yeah, but Joe Mauer" but then I recalled Parker's advice, and found this http://www.hardballtimes.com/the-state-and-future-of-pitch-framing-research/ Turns out Joe was middle of the pack as a catcher. So I changed my tune. TR has been quoted dozens of times saying he doesn't value pitch framing metrics, turns out he doesn't show evidence of valuing catcher skill either.
  17. im not a fan of either Stauffer or Pelfrey, but of all of the known quantities available to the bullpen, they are 2 of the 3 least worrisome. Stauffer was a decent reliever in a very pitcher friendly park, Pelfrey has had some success as a pitcher in the past. Neither one of them has much of a stake attached to them, so if they blow up in epic fashion, it's easy to pull the hook. My concern is that so much of the bullpen is tied to guys like Fien, Duensing, etc, who we've watched fail in epic fashion for 4 years straight. TR doesn't have 6 high upside relief pitchers knocking on the big league door, he has 2 maybe 3. What about 4-5-6 with injury? Much like the last couple years it's an optionless team, especially in the pitching department.
  18. There's nothing wrong with a strong back end of the rotation. It's certainly better than a poor staff 1-5. It's not my 100 million dollars, but even if it were, that's going rate for a team that hasn't developed minor league pitching in close to a decade.
  19. very true, that probably impacts Rosario's 2015 more than how Hicks plays. If Santana is a revelation at shortstop, one would think Rosario would be the primary 5th outfielder, basically on call in the minors in the event of emergency.
  20. it depends on Vargas at DH and how much poor fielding Moli can stomach. I can picture a situation where Arcia or Hunter DHs and Rosario comes up to play LF, but probably not to start the season.
  21. Yours and Dan's work here has been just phenomenal. Thank you!
  22. im optimistic about Rosario because his AFL showing in a very small sample size, a resiliency. He had a crap season in 2014 that appeared in large part due to rust. He looked more like his minor league track record in the AFL statistically which is really encouraging. Compared to the options available, Rosario might be the best major league CF the Twins have. This is as much an indictment of TR as it is a compliment to Rosario.
  23. it appears he has a good slider, and a good fastball, but doesn't have command of a third pitch. Tough to pitch to hitters a second and third time without a third pitch to keep them honest. I wasn't clear in my value comment, I mean, the Twins traded a good Centerfielder for a prospect who has yet to bear fruit. I think Meyer can contribute to the major league club immediately as a reliever, and still has potential to become a starter with the major league club
