  1. To me, signing Drew is a no-brainer. SS is just about the hardest position to upgrade and the pipeline of internal/development candidates is very thin. Getting a comparable upgrade via trade will have a material cost in prospects. Drew provides offensive improvement, solid enough defence, requires only a 2-3 year commitment and is available for the one thing the Twins have in abundance (cash).
  2. Thorpe has been doing well in the Aussie league. It's not a great standard, but probably equivalent to Low/high A ball so a level of competition higher than he has routinely played against. Through 7 starts he has 30/10 K/BB in 36.2IP with a 2.45 ERA
  3. Bonds, Clemens, Maddux, Thomas, Glavine, Bagwell, Piazza, Biggio, Raines Steroid-era holdovers are going to make this a very crowded ballot in years to come, if it's not already
  4. Outside of Correia and Deduno, the rest of the Twins starters somehow combined to deliver 600IP for -6.0 WAR (6.0 WBR?)
  5. Done. It's been a great piece of work the past couple of seasons, and time and effort you guys put into it is much appreciated.
  6. Jamey Carroll's perfect inning in relief. I enjoyed rooting for Dozier, Arcia and Pinto during the year. Its depressing to think that as of June 12 the Twins were 29-33 and hoping for improvements from the likes of Hicks, Arcia and Gibson, and yet they conspired to go 37-63 in the last 100 games.
  7. Fair play to McCann for backing up his pitcher, but I can't see how he doesn't get tossed for doing it.
  8. I think if Gardy gets a 1 or 2 year deal then either Jake Mauer or Dougie Baseball will be good chances to succeed him after that. It's probably a bit early for both, but I'd like to see one of them added as a bench coach. If Gardy is gone, my picks would be Molitor (internal) or Dave Martinez (external).
  9. 6. The heart of the lineup - Mauer, Willingham, Morneau seemed to provide such a bedrock at 3-4-5 at the beginning of the year. I think most people felt that if there were some vaguely competent pieces around them, scoring runs would not be an issue. Of the many things that have gone wrong this year, having none of those guys hold down those positions come September would have been hard to imagine in Spring. Don't get me wrong - Dozier, Arcia and Pinto are the only reasons to watch at the moment, and I've enjoyed pulling for all of them during the year, but anyone who predicted six months ago that these three guys would not only be lining up at 3-4-5, but would also be the best 3 hitters on the team would have won the internets and then some.
  10. Arcia will be fine. Let's not forget he's only 15 months removed from hitting at Ft Myers. I would expect .280/.350/.450 with 20 HR as a minimum by 2015, with the potential to be better than that.
  11. Is there a base level of production from a replacement catcher that would render the marginal upgrade provided by Mauer behind the plate not worth the risk of further injury? If the option for next year is Herrmann putting up a .220/.290/.330 line, then IMO the upgrade provided by Mauer is substantial enough that the team needs to wear the injury risk and he needs to catch a large proportion of games. But if Pinto is capable of hitting .260/.330/.420 with adequate defense I'm prepared to tell Joe to go hang up his catcher's mitt. At that point the upgrade over (say) 80 games catching doesn't seem worth it. Where do others draw the line (if at all)?
  12. Hat tip to MLB.com for this, but apparently Brian Dozier leads the AL in XBH since 1 July.
  13. Good point. I hadn't really considered that, but it makes sense to me.
  14. Seth, if Beresford is one of the best defensive SS in the system, any idea why has he played exclusively 2B at Rochester?
  15. Another solid outing from Sam Gibbons. He hasn't shown the polish and outstanding peripherals that fellow Aussie Thorpe has put up to date, but he's a big unit and projectable and has picked up nicely in his last four outings (1.00 ERA and 15/1 K/BB in 18 IP).
  16. Stewart 4IP, 8k, 0ER so far in his first start for E-town
  17. Liriano against lefties this year: .137/.188/.158 Insane.
  18. I expect Beresford will play Winter ball in Australia, most likely for Melbourne.
  19. Clearly unsettled at the sight of Leeeeeeeeeewwwwwwwww leading off.
  20. As bad as Hicks has been, I think this is a bit much. Young players often struggle in their first year. Not many are made to do so for such a protracted period without being put out of their misery and sent down to work on their game at AAA. Hicks will be fine once he gets a chance to regroup, and his personal history suggests he is (unsurprisingly) better when repeating a level. What historical comps for his production are you looking at to dismiss him? Guys like Mike Cameron, Hunter, Gomez all had poor starts to their major league careers at ages 23-25 and went on to become above average, productive players. If anything, the ones who come in straight from AA and make an immediate impact are the exceptions rather than the rules.
  21. Most valuable part of the trade IMO
  22. Thorpe's 38/2 K/BB in 27.2 IP is mighty impressive
  23. Drew might see better pitches batting 9th behind those NL pitchers
  24. I agree. Rosario has now played >150 games at 2B, compared to about 130 in the outfield.
