  1. Lewis Thorpe made 1 start for Melbourne in the Aussie league this summer ( your winter) - gave up 1 run on 3 hits in 5+ innings. Pretty impressive for a 17 year old. I didn't see the game though, so can't comment on how he looked.
  2. Knoblauch and Koskie for me. I always thought Koskie was a bit underrated, especially defensively. I'd love to drop him into this current Twins line up.
  3. Didn't they pay Johan 4/30? I can't remember exactly
  4. Should that depress me about the "ace" of the rotation or encourage me about Correia? I'm not trying to defend the Correia signing as a great one, far from it. Just suggesting it's not as bad as is being made out here.
  5. I guess I'm not convinced that the Twins already have what Correia brings, or that he doesn't fill a need. Time will prove me wrong maybe. At this point, Diamond and Worley are the only guys pencilled in the rotation. What's left? Hendricks - as a fellow Aussie I hope he makes it, and I'm not going to write him off given his age and relative minor league success, but in terms of WAR, ERA, WHIP he was demonstrably worse than Correia last year DeVries - looks like the most likely guy to provide some serviceable innings Deduno - BB rate is an implosion waiting to happen and I'll take Correia's proven mediocrity Blackburn - you're kidding, right? Gibson - going to be on an innings count, so bank on him of 1/2 to 2/3 of a season. The fact is, outside of Diamond the Twins weren't able to get 20 starts out of anyone last year. Nick Blackburn (gulp) was forced to turn out 19 starts. There is value in what Correia brings, even if it's not exciting and doesn;t have much upside. Of course I would prefer them to sign Marcum or Jackson to provide genuine quality, and I hope by some miracle they do, but you can't force them to come here. And if you can't get those guys then you have to find whatever modest ways to improve the team you can. Replacing the 30 starts the team was forced to endure from Blackburn/Pavano with Correia makes the team incrementally better.
  6. Some over reaction to this signing. Personally I'm not that bothered by it: 2yrs/$10m isn't a budget killing contract. There is still room to add significant payroll The Twins had OVER 100 STARTS last year from pitchers with an ERA > 5.00, so rolling out those same guys (Blackburn, Pavano, Liriano, Walters etc) isn't an option. Correia's 4.21 ERA from last year will likely rise a bit moving from NL>AL but there's at least some prospect he can keep the team in games rather than being out of it inside 2 innings. To that end, Correia had 17 starts last year where he went at least 6IP with < 4 earned runs. No Twins starter from last year can claim that. Pittsburgh went 15-13 in games started by Correia last year - I would take that outcome in a heartbeat. Look, am I sickened by the low K rate and lack of upside in the signing? For sure. Would I prefer to see Marcum at 3/35 or Jackson at 4/50? Absolutely. Do I think Correia is going to anchor the rotation over the next two years? Of course not. But in the world in which TR is forced to operate (an institutionalised reluctance for long term FA signings, the 2013 Twins being a spectacularly unattractive FA destination), adding a guy to provide some back of the rotation innings that will keep the team in games for $5m per year hardly warrants a mob of posters with burning torches and pitchforks.
  7. I could have lived with Blanton as an affordable piece if he was paired with one of Marcum, McCarthy or Dempster. As one poster pointed out a few days ago, his FIP and xFIP belied his headline numbers this past couple of seasons.
  8. Doesn't this suggest he would be more effective leading off?
  9. Gibson solid again in rehab. 6 K 0 BB and giving up just a solo HR. Any prospect of him being sent to the AFL to give him a chance of breaking camp with the Big League club next year?
  10. "Disaster" seems a bit harsh from my perspective. His plate discipline has been disappointing given his minor league track record, but a rookie needing to make adjustments in this regard is nothing new. In the field he's made some errorrs, but has shown decent range and turned his share of double plays. I'd like to think he can come back up later in the year or next season and show a competent ML skill set. At least he's cheap - Dozier + $6m > JJ Hardy.
  11. Sano with #24. What's the MWL record?
  12. Another nice start for Felix Jorge in the GCL. After kicking off with a couple of shaky relief outings he's been lights out as a starter - 5 GS 18.2 IP 0ER 19/5 K/BB
  13. Arcia hits one out in the second game of the DH. Crazy game at Ft Myers. Pavano gave up a HR in 2 IP of his rehab start
  14. Both Thorpe and Gibbons are from Melbourne, so I haven't seen either play. Thorpe though is regarded as one of the best prospects in Australia. He's only 16, a lefty with a fastball that's topped out at around 90-91 mph. He's not a big guy, so not sure how much upside there is in his velocity. Rumour here is he signed for a pretty decent bonus ($500k?) but not sure how accurate that is. Good to see the Aussie invasion gathering speed though!
  15. I'd be more inclined towards 1. Sano 2. Arcia 3. Buxton 4. Hicks 5. Rosario
  16. 2 HR for Arcia. OPSing over .950 through his first 100 AA at bats. Color me excited.
  17. Do they stuff the E-Town roster with advanced prospects, or just play in a childrens playground?
  18. I know it's early, but E-Town sporting 4 of the top 5 Appy League OPS leaders. Encouraged that Arcia seems to have slotted into NB without much difficulty.
  19. RP Great work on BYTO over the years - thanks for all your efforts. Hopefully all those migrating can help TDers release their inner snark.
  20. Depends on where he plays. If he catches 120+ games, I'll say 8-10. If that number is around 80, with more time at 1B and DH, maybe 15. I think a full season of catching is a drain on Mauer's power numbers
