What Will Minnesota Twins Do with Matt Wallner?
mikelink45 replied to Cody Pirkl's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
Trade him to the A's where he can pair with Rooker! Or trade him to Toronto where he can reunite with Varland. I think he still has real value. If we have put up with Lee and Lewis and their production we owe Wallner another year.- 101 replies

Tough way to create an OBP. Might try using the bat instead of the body. Winokur's errors is consistent with what I witnessed in Iowa. I do not see him at SS.

Road to a Rebound: Brooks Lee
mikelink45 replied to Nick Nelson's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
Save and post - works for Julien, Miranda, Lewis, Wallner, Larnach. Perhaps the essay we need is an evaluation of all the supposedly baseball savvy coaches and what they are supposed to be doing. I noted that Popkins seemed to find himself after leaving the Twins way. Please start the quality control coach and help us figure out why our prospects fizzle in the majors. -
I don't speculate on trades - we have so many dream scenarios. I only look at what we know and right now this is not a championship up the middle combination. Let's hope Buxton retains his speed and quality so one of the positions is above average. In the minors I see Marek and Culpepper at least a year away. Beyond that not much and if you are still looking at Julien we are in big trouble and Martin is not going to raise the bar either.

Arbitrary Thoughts: Ryan Jeffers
mikelink45 replied to Matthew Lenz's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
I will be so happy if the new electronic strike zone gets rid of the ridiculous "framing". It is just legalized cheating. Let's move forward. The biggest question for me is his arm strength, speed, and accuracy as we are seeing a rebound in SB. Otherwise are we looking at a duo of Gaspar and Paredes? Yikes. -
Regression in MLB for our prospects has been a trend in Rocco's years. Whether him or the coaches it is a big failure. Now we hope on Walker, Rodriguez, Gonzales but what are the expectations for them to continue to progress. Wallner and Lewis and Julien and Miranda all had a decent start then the floor gave way. At least we can rely on the bullpen (sarcasm in case you wonder).

The Latest On Minnesota Twins' Managerial Search
mikelink45 replied to Cody Christie's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
No opinion. No one is a good manager until they prove it. And even the best of managers - think Casey Stengel can win with a great team (Yankees) but not with a bad team (Mets). And bad managers (Fred Haney of Milwaukee Braves) win when the team is just so good they don't need to be managed. Tom Kelly is considered the superstar of Twins Managers had a career .478 winning record. And 5 winning years of first of second place in 16 years. Yet we think of him as the genius manager despite blowing it with Dave Ortiz and a few others. What makes a great manager? It really comes down to a smart baseball man who knows how to relate to his players without losing authority. Although my caveat now is that we have so many specialty coaches the manager is also the manager of a coaching team. How do we measure that ability of the coaches themselves?- 73 replies

Arbitrary Thoughts: Joe Ryan
mikelink45 replied to Sherry Cerny's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
Pitching has always been more important than hitting. If Lopez and Ryan are gone and they are just as likely to trade both as keep both, who could we get for their combined salary to lead the rotation? Our pipeline has no one ready to move to 1 and 2 and Ober just sunk position 3. Keep them both - that is my arbitrary decision.- 51 replies

Don't be so sure - I would have said the same for Gaspar and Bride. Falvey might want him so he can claim to be a talent genius.

Wow - the early question on TD was if we were becoming the Pirates - considering we just picked up a DFA from the Pirates I guess we just sunk below them. Way to get the fan based excited!

No choice here - especially when another failed prospect - Miranda is next in line. -
I'm sorry that Polanco is busy in the playoffs so he can't tell you that he loves the trade!

Maybe TD can do a complete creative look if we combine the AAA and MLB rosters what is the best combination of players on the field, rotation and pen. This might be more realistic than thinking they will sign of trade for someone significant.

There is both DH and 1B where Wallner can be used and Larnach if he is still on the team. But it depends on Rodriguez and Walker - Roden and Outman and Martin don't fill the corner OF spots if we are looking to upgrade, but Martin has the best potential of the three. We also have Gonzales with a hot bat that does not do as well in the OF. A little creativity and some help to let the rookies adjust and we can take care of 1B for more than a few months.

I have no idea - at this point with all the coaches that we hire I do not know what to expect - so maybe a cheer leader is the right answer. But somehow more coaches do not make a better team. Every athlete we sign was a star at some level so maybe it is a mental hurdle. After seeing the Brewers beat the cubs - hurray with no more star power than we have I think that we have to go back to team efforts, not waiting for one player to carry a team. The Angels with the Mike Trout legacy could not win, but the Brewers and other teams without the biggest stars do if everyone buys into doing what they are capable of.

The sad thing is the fact that there are so many measurements that tell us how bad the team and individuals were.

Arbitrary Thoughts: RHP Cole Sands
mikelink45 replied to Cody Christie's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
I would feel better if he were not looked at is the top leverage arm. He's a good mid level bullpen arm but he's not a closer yet if we're going to take advantage of young prospects and move up we need to add a couple of bullpen arms that are better than his. But there is no question that he should be tendered -
I do not trade either Lopez or Ryan. We see need them and Buxton - that is a three part anchor to keep the Twins from sinking completely. They are what you build on. We are not going to get better than they already are. I am not anxious for a 2030 rebuild. Let's make this the bottom. With the potential we have in Jenkins, Rodriguez, Gonzales, Culpepper there is a chance at least half of them succeed and if so we can start rising again. Move some young SP arms to the BP and let's change the attitude of the team and the fans. It really is a question of the Pohlads and if they want a championship contender or just a bigger saving account.

My arbitrary thought is that we have a lot of players who should be replaced, but not all will be.
