Twins defense has steadily gone downhill since TK left. It aggravated me during the Gardenhire years when Twins announcers praised the Twins defense as elite and described every defensive error or baserunning blunder as a one-off. Multiple times a game in many cases. Rocco has brought us to new depths, but the lack of minor league development is the true culprit. If there was any emphasis on defense in our development process at least one prospect would be able to play it, that's just the law of averages.

You can't be the next Liam Hendrix while with the Twins. Once Varland is traded or released he will be eligible to become the next Liam Hendrix.

I look forward to the day when we have players who work hard and "know where to throw the ball" come out of our minor league system. Maybe the next FO will make it a priority.

Lineup of Twins Roster Hopefuls Beats Tigers, 4-0
shimrod replied to John Bonnes's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
It's weird, isn't it? Bottom line, defense is a bastard stepchild for the Twins. The emphasis on defensive versatility makes it difficult for any player to master their position. Meanwhile, via platoon, the team tries to field a roster of offensive situational specialists. If it were me, I'd reverse that. Put your core players at a defensive position and leave them there (this needs to begin in the high minors) to master their craft. Stop the platoons. Mentally, defense impacts offense and vice versa. How much better would the Twins young players hit if they were 100% comfortable in the field?- 69 replies

If they haven't been practicing and reinforcing fundamentals at the MLB level it's likely they haven't been doing it in the minors either. Which would explain why every prospect we promote is a defensive liability. Buxton is the last plus defender we developed internally and his defense is dependent on intrinsic athletic ability.

"not letting the guys be themselves ..." This is the key, in my opinion. My impression is the organization has a preferred approach at the plate and coaches all the players to follow that approach. For some it works, for some it's actually detrimental. Coaching to shore up individuals weak spots while allowing the players to play to their strengths should allow for a team of diverse but productive capabilities and increase the opportunities to play situational baseball. Now, my main source of Twins news is TD. If I got the wrong impression it's all your fault.

"...no Falvey drafted player has ever earned an All Star selection..." I think this says more about the Twins player development than their drafting. Has any Falvey drafted player reaching the majors been viewed as an average or better defender? I can't think of one. Twins earned a reputation as strong defenders under Tom Kelly, then coasted on that reputation through the Gardenhire years as the team defense gradually declined. We can't even develop an average defender at first, much less second or short. I sympathize with the commenters who want our manager to hold the players accountable for their defense. Defensive fundamentals need to be learned and internalized in the minors. If defensive accountability is not demanded in the minors it won't be available in the majors.

I would be shocked if the Twins sale exploration process did not include an evaluation of what potential changes will attract a higher bid. Just like selling a house, you have your realtor look it over and recommend cost effective actions you can take to boost value. In other words, no guessing. Now the recommendation may be business as usual but we're not privy to that information. Furthermore, business as usual is what has the franchise up for sale. You broke it, don't break it any more could well be the advice.

The team is for sale. What attributes do the current ownership believe enhance the value of the team? Do prospective owners place more value on an established lineup or low initial salary overhead? If the latter the team might be willing to add prospects to deals in order to trade high priced veterans. Will prospective owners pay more for a team with robust attendance or a loaded minor league system? If the former we might see a number of prospects out the door for position/pitching upgrades in an attempt to juice attendance. Normal offseason considerations don't apply. Sustainability is not a consideration unless ownership thinks buyers value the farm system as much as revenue and profit.

"The clause at the Metrodome, ruled by a judge, is why the team isn’t contracted today. Those leases are pretty iron clad. " As I recall, the judge was perfectly willing to allow the Twins to buy out the lease. He asked them to open the books and demonstrate the team was not making money. The Twins pulled the team out of the contraction program rather than show their financials to the judge.

Game Recap: Cleveland 5, Twins 3
shimrod replied to Nash Walker's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
Sano has looked great - today 4 Ks. By the time I got home from work they were in extras - so I only saw one Sano AB. The second strike (called) was both low and outside and it wasn't even close. The third strike (swinging) was also low and outside but hell, if the ump called the first one a strike who's to know the second won't be as well? No player in the league could do anything productive with either of those pitches. The umpires are either crooked or incompetent (and I'm not ruling out "both"). The electronic strike zone can't arrive soon enough. Frankly, I wouldn't be surprised if the umpires are opposing the electronic strike zone due to the impact it would have on their off-the-books income. -
Game Recap: Athletics 6, Twins 1

Wasn't able to watch the game last night, but it sounds as though they played the same game(s) I watched last week so I guess I didn't miss anything. Looking for a silver lining here....Can we credit this team for at least being consistent? -
I'll go with all of the above. See what we can get for Falvey and Rocco while we're at it.

I like watching La Tortuga play, but it's frustrating to see his bat-to-ball talent and think what a productive hitter he could be with a smidgeon more discrimination at the plate.

Game Recap: Twins 2, Pirates 0
shimrod replied to Thiéres Rabelo's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
"Was I the only one expecting Rocco to pull Happ after 5 innings?" No. He's supposed to be a smart guy - if he can learn from his mistakes and repeat them less he could be fine. I've been critical of him; he's formulaic and with the recent troubles it appeared he was flailing as much as the players. Still, he's a relatively inexperienced manager. His first year the bats exploded and he was probably thinking the job isn't that hard. Last year was a cluster for everyone, hard to conclude anything. This year we'll find out what he's made of. -
What was Rocco Baldelli Thinking?!
shimrod replied to Matthew Taylor's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
The one excuse I haven't seen yet that might actually fly is the loss of the former bench coach. I don't know what that interaction looks like in practice, but if the manager typically receives opinions from other coaches (bench, bullpen, pitching, etc) and decides which opinion to implement I can see the sudden loss of that coach having a big impact on his performance. We had a traumatic disruption to the staff before the season and that could explain a lot. That said, it's still on Rocco to turn it around. -
What was Rocco Baldelli Thinking?!
shimrod replied to Matthew Taylor's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
"There is a massive difference between "Rocco is bad at his job" and "Those two plays weren't his fault". Massive." If two fielding plays were the only issues with this club we wouldn't be trailing in the ALC and there wouldn't be so much angst in the comments. -
What was Rocco Baldelli Thinking?!
shimrod replied to Matthew Taylor's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
"You only have to read a few posts up to see he gets little credit for the last two years....somehow. Really, all I see on this board is that the players won the last two years, despite Rocco, so I don't know what you are reading....." There are plenty of posters who say Rocco either was dealt a bad hand or isn't responsible. "MLB players need to hit and make plays - the manager doesn't hit or field" condenses the sentiment. Those are the folks I was responding to. If you manage people - not just baseball, but if you've ever supervised employees - you know you're responsible for the results. You can't point at the folks who work for you and pass the blame. You're getting paid to get them to do the job properly. It doesn't matter why they're failing - poor training, poor attitudes, poor working conditions - it's on you to make it work. Right now it's not working and it aggravates me when I read posts absolving Rocco of most or all of the blame. Yes, there are plenty of people criticizing the manager right now. I was addressing the others. -
What was Rocco Baldelli Thinking?!
shimrod replied to Matthew Taylor's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
"Baldelli is still the best manager for this ballclub..." I saw no justification for this statement. Why? Because he's the guy under contract? I want his job. He gets the credit for success and every failure is someone else's fault. Rocco was touted as a genius from the day he was hired. It's time to earn the accolades by turning this club around, pronto.
