  1. I think the most appropriate Mauer charge would be charging the umpire the next time he gets a called third strike. "You think you have a better eye than me Dirt Bag?! I am Joe Mauer!" There is the story he charged his brother and ended up putting his had through some glass in the bathroom door to try and reach him. Since that was probably the late 90's, he is due for another eruption soon.
  2. My hometown only had a cafe and an A&W (which was only open in the summer). That is why we had to do our fine dining in Ely or Virginia. I think Andy Griffith also might have been our sheriff.
  3. I am hoping the offense is not at their mid-season form.
  4. That describes evenings out in the big town of Virginia. That also was where the nearest McDonalds was and their movie theater was open on weekdays unlike Ely's, so you had more than two days to see a movie before it was replaced by something else. Although to be fair, I think Star Wars might have played in Ely for more than one weekend.
  5. I remember when Ely got a Pizza Hut (back when you ate at the Pizza Hut) it was a really big thing. There was already a Dairy Queen so it was living large when you had two choices of where to go after the movie (there was a theater too - although the movie often broke down, and I think there might have been rats - in the theater not Pizza Hut).
  6. I remember watching the repeats after school growing up. Some really clever stuff - loved Fractured Fairy Tales as well.
  7. I do 62 at night and have it turn up to 65 about an hour before I get up. Depending on what I am doing, will either leave it at 65 or put it up to 68. I am in an older place with radiators, so no central air, but window unit keeps it to 80ish if necessary so the fish don't die a horrific death. At this point I am not sure it is going to be above 50 again, so that might not be an issue any longer.
  8. I have posted this before - but for a long time I read RiverBrian as RiverBrain, which I suppose is fitting in its own way.
  9. I am sure 99.99 % of Mauer wants Morrison to do well to help the team, but I wonder if there is a very, very small part of him thinking, maybe they will ask me back to play first base next year.
  10. There are families and then there are families.
  11. I have sadly had work interfere with being able to check the game thread, but looks like you are get a nice quantity of posts for an afternoon game. I have only read a few of the posts, but am sure the quality is up there was well.
  12. I don't think the concussion symptoms were suddenly better last season. There were signs of improvement the year before, but then he played injured (hamstring?) and his stats sunk in August and September. 2017 was a bit of a continuation on the first two thirds of 2016. Even in 2015 there were some glimpses of pre-concussion Joe, so if you look at the last three seasons, it has been more of a gradual improvement than an instant recovery. Hopefully that trend will continue or he will play close to the level of last year. I do think the fact that they no longer need to try to get him in as many games as possible and given him more rest has helped.
  13. I just want to hear him say "you will have to pry the bat from my cold dead hands" in his Mauerian accent. I know people complain that he does not show enough emotion, but I thought he looked happy to be playing out there. There were a number of times I saw him on the field or interviewed before or after the game where he seemed to be enjoying himself. I think enough his peers have retired where he knows he is nearing the end, and he appreciates still being able to play. If he has a decent year, I think he will try to work something out post 2018.
  14. I just saw Get Out on Sunday - figured it would be a good one to see in a dark theater. I thought it was good, but am not sure it was "best picture" good. Better than average - good - but not as great as some of its hype.
  15. I saw this Sunday (wanted to see the Post or Darkest Hour, but my friend had seen them - said they were great), and yes, well acted, and someone spent a lot of time getting the look of the 1950's upper class. Other than that by the end of the seemingly 8 hour movie the whole cast could have been eaten by sharks and I would not have cared. Not that people need to be likable in a movie, but you need to care about them someone even if it is hoping to see them get their just desserts. It might be worth seeing for Lewis's last performance, but I would be tempted to wait until you can rent it and watch it at home. My friend hosts an Oscar party and always tries to see all the movies. She said in a way, she might have enjoyed Get Out the most, but that a number of the movies were good (although she did not care for Phantom Thread).
  16. Thinks like this do not make me feel especially young. Time flies - it does not seem that long ago that Justin and Joe were basically college age. Phil Miller‏ @MillerStrib Gophers shortstop Terrin Vavra, son of former Twins coach Joe Vavra, will play vs. Twins tonight. Joe Mauer and Justin Morneau were just recalling how, when he was 10, Terrin would entertain them by imitating all their swings.
  17. I don't know - he seems pretty wild and reckless if this is how he behaves - someone is going to get hurt. If he can have a season similar to last year, I would like to see him play a couple of more years for a reasonable price. I suspect he will retire if he does not continue with the Twins, but you never know. If he still wants to play and it had to be with another team,I would not begrudge him it, but it would seem wrong to see him in another uniform. Time flies, it does not seem that long ago he was the young kid on the team. I am not sure I appreciated how young he was at the time. I remember when Casilla was new to the team, they were talking about the ups and downs of a young player, and I realized Mauer was only a year or two older than him, but was already considered an experienced veteran and had been for awhile. .
  18. I remember in 2011 or 2012 they dropped the firm that had been doing a lot of the commercials and my thought was, with all the people that you could possibly fire or drop right now or things you could change, you are getting rid of the one thing you are doing right? They had a great stretch of commercials going for awhile there - a lot more memorable than a lot of what you see on Super Bowl Sunday.
  19. Maybe he meant he just wants to make a lot of friends and give away a lot of gift baskets.
  20. I am hoping the 2018 World Series ring is what helps push him over the edge.
  21. Chief or RiverBrian, but I suspect they might be too expensive and too heavily booked.
  22. I know he still spends time there, esp. right before spring training, but didn't that change when he got married? I remember an interview of Perkins a couple of years ago where he said Joe no longer did the complete FL move in the off-season and they had spent the winter building an ice rink. Even when he did the move, it seemed like he was in town a fair amount through the holidays. I think there were signs of the 2017 resurgence in 2016, but it got derailed by the hamstring injury. August and Sept. really sunk his numbers for the season and Molitor said it was a mistake that they did not DL him. I am guessing there will be a one or probably two year deal after this year. I see him retiring before playing elsewhere.
