  1. No, 1.2 is not his upside. He's posted a 2.8 already in his career. 1.2 is probably his expected production, but certainly not his upside. That is a thousand times better than his upside with the so called adjustments the Twins have made to him, which is bagging groceries at Costco.
  2. Fangraphs calculates WAR based on xFIP. Santiago has consistently outperformed his FIP. He has had bWAR of 2.8, 1.8, 1.5, and was at 0.8 before coming here this year, which would have put him on pace for about 1.2 or so. That's acceptable from your 5th starter.
  3. Effectively wild has worked for him his entire career. He doesn't need to improve, he just needs to keep doing what he was doing his entire career before we got our hands on him, and he's a serviceable 4th or 5th starter.
  4. I'd rather have Santiago if we also get a new coaching staff that isn't obsessed with pitching to contact.
  5. I'm skeptical of any statement that begins with the disclaimer "true story". Are we to assume that you are lying every time we don't see that disclaimer?
  6. For my generation it was Wild Thing. And not, "wild thing, you make my heart sing", but "she said, I get paid to do the wild thing".
  7. I don't want guys throwing strikes all the time. This club's obsession with throwing strikes and pitching to contact is by far my biggest gripe. You have to be willing to try to make guys chase when in pitchers counts, which means throwing some balls, and issuing a few walks.
  8. Personally, I would rank Gonsalves ahead of all of them, aside from Berrios who will soon graduate. But, I don't think it's unreasonable to argue for Jay. It all depends on how much weight you place on ceiling, floor, proximity, likelihood of reaching ceiling, etc. Jay has better stuff, if he can develop his change up as an average pitch, and hold up for 200 innings, he has a higher ceiling than Gonsalves. MLB Pipeline, for example, who historically tends to place a little more weight on upside, currently has Jay above Gonsalves. Personally I'd go (after Berrios, starting pitchers): 1 Gonsalves 2 Jay 3 Romero 4 Mejia 5 Thorpe 6 Stewart 7 Jorge But, I wouldn't bat an eye at any combo of the top 3.
  9. Well there have been plenty of instances where this team has had, what turned out to be, an overly optimistic prediction of when an injured player would return. Until Hughes actually begins to throw all of his pitches off of a mound, we have no idea how he will recover.
  10. I'd guess that he, like I, think that Hughes will not be healthy enough to return.
  11. Some high picks, like Buxton, are pretty obvious at the time. Those, I agree are unfair to rip in hindsight. I think a pick like Jay is a bit different though. That was a questionable and risky pick at the time, so I think it's perfectly fair to continue to question the pick if it doesn't work out.
  12. They are at 38, but Perkins and Hughes go back on after the season, so they are effectively (for offseason purposes) at 40. Wheeler is not currently on the 40 man roster.
  13. I'm also pretty sure he's not eligible for Dominican leagues either, unless we sold Georgia to the Dominican Republic and I missed it.
  14. I think with optional waivers he stays on the roster until he clears.
  15. It seems odd to me that the Twins were actually worried enough about losing organizational filler, Albers, that they were willing to effectively play a man short (Albers wasn't available to pitch after throwing 6 innings) while they waited for him to clear optional waivers.
  16. And Albers pitched 6 innings yesterday, so we are effectively playing with a 24 man roster for no good reason.
  17. Buddy Boshers and Tommy Milone hit the DL in August of a lost season. Instead of using that as an opportunity to get a look at a couple of guys who might have a future with us, Antony gives us a couple of AAAA lifers in Albers and Dean. Sorry, not good enough, he's not the guy for the job.
  18. Let's stop lumping everyone in that era as a steroid user, please. The estimates I've seen are 30% at the peak of the steroid era. That still leaves 70% that were clean.
  19. I'd never put it at 0%, but I can't see any team giving Suzuki a multi year deal.
  20. I realize it's only 2 starts, and I'm not making any statements at this point, but does anyone have a different opinion now that they've seen him pitch? Ok, maybe a little statement. He looks like a lefthanded Nolasco to me.
  21. I can't, I'm not in a position to make assessments of every person in the organization and not qualified even if I were. In an organization with hundreds of employees, you don't become one of the worst in the league because ONLY one person is failing at their job. People who are not getting results from their duties need to be replaced, whether they be in scouting, minor league development, analytical, research, medical, training, or on field staff. I understand that nobody wants to be fired, but it's a reality in any business.
  22. Or we could do Molitor's plan which is apparently to play him at DH everyday and see if that makes him a better DH.
  23. Absolutely, I want a smart, informed, thought out hire. I don't want a lazy flavor of the month hire like you described above. I will keep an open mind. If Antony is the hire, I might grumble for a few weeks, but I'll give him a chance. If he makes some significant changes in the organization I'll have some curious interest in what he can do. If he deems the status quo as good to go, I'll believe he was the wrong hire, because there is no way that Terry Ryan was the only person at fault for the last 6 years.
