    The four best offenses in the NFL are the four remaining teams. Defense doesn't get it done anymore. Just another reason I think they should have moved on from Zimmer.

    You are the one claiming to know what he would have gotten in arbitration. The fact he settled, alone, is hardly some kind of evidence that they threw him an olive branch. 90% of the cases in baseball will settle before going to arbitration. Neither one of us know what he would have received. Nor do MLB trade rumors. They are guessing, just like us.

    It's not about the team. It's the big city lifestyle. World class restaurants, high end shopping on Michigan Avenue, big city nightlife. That's what Machado and Harper are going to be looking for, again possibly excepting an elite team like Houston. They are going to NY, LA, Chicago, Boston or San Francisco.

    Why would Rosario sign that? He's practically guaranteed more that that through the next 2 years of arbitration.

    How do you figure they have $30 million more to spend? Last year was inflated from one time BamTec payment. They have about $9 million left to spend, by my accounting.

    Yeah, when it comes to fringe 40 man spots, I'm protecting ceiling every time. The potential for slightly above replacement level spurts from a cheap 5th starter has some value, but doesn't really move the needle at all.

    The Twins don't have payroll room to front load that deal. No BamTech money this year, max payroll mandate is likely $103-106. You can say there is no salary cap, but we have to deal in reality, not "coulds" or "shoulds". The FO has a hard payroll budget, whether we like it or not.

    I don't agree. Chicago is the 3rd biggest city in America. I doubt he'd even answer the phone if we called. He's going to a mega market, exception being an elite team like Houston. He's going to get more money than he could spend no matter where he signs, so I don't think we could make up for being a losing team in flyover country by offering more money.

    Players are not getting paid the same though. Last year was only the second time in 50 years that total league salary didn't rise year over year. And, that response from him is just wrong. Martin was older, yes, but he was the far better player, at the time he signed that deal. And, the players could easily negotiate payroll be tied to revenue, as it is in other leagues. But they won't, because then they'd have to have a salary cap. So it's just as much on the players as it is ownership. Why would the owners pay more than they have to, to acquire the players services? Out of the kindness of their hearts?

    Astudillo has a minor league option remaining (I believe), so other teams will not be allowed to grab him.

    Dozier just got $9 million. I'm not sure he's even barely a depth caliber player anymore, let alone a starter. Teams may be avoiding longer deals, but they don't appear to be paying less per year, IMO.

    Maybe I'm reading this wrong, but Yasmani Grandal is nowhere close to comparable to Russell Martin, at the time he signed that deal. Martin combined for 9.4 bWAR the 2 years prior to signing that deal. Grandal has combined for 5.5 the last 2 years. And Grandal signed for the same AAV as Martin, after turning down 4/50, so if anything Grandal overachieved in his negotiations, compared to Martin.

    They received $50 million from the sale of BamTech last year. They spend roughly 50% on payroll, so $25 million. They will open somewhere around $25 million less than last year.

    Rosario is a FA after 2021. And, I'm not sure why you'd put Larnach in the outfield, with Rosario at DH.

    The Indians actually have 2 that go past 2020, Carrasco and Ramirez.And, besides, we are talking about the fact that the Twins have nothing committed past 2019, which is a lot different than 2020. The Indians have 5, Royals 4, Tigers and Sox 2 each. So no, not normal.

    Both Gordon and Gonsalves are outside of the top 100 now though. Even with Verlander's full no trade clause, they were still able to get a top 60 prospect. I can't imagine getting a legit front of the rotation starter for a package that doesn't have someone that high at a minimum.

    His best tool (run) would be wasted at third base. If he can't stick at SS, he's a center fielder.

    It's an interesting theory, I can't dismiss it outright. Though I find it hard to believe you could shop a major league baseball team, even preliminarily, without it leaking. I'd guess the FO is still in evaluation mode for one more season, as unpopular as that will be.

    The interjection of Joe Mauer into this post is a bizarre non sequitur. I'm pretty sure Mauer is going into the Twins HOF based on his career body of work, not based on last year.

    Again, it's not clear that players aren't being paid like they were. Last year was only the second time in 50 years that league salary didn't rise year over year. We need more evidence than one off season, last year could have been a fluke. Spending seems to be back to normal, IMO, when you account for the big names still unsigned. Harper and Machado are going to get paid, who cares how long into the offseason it takes? Zach Britton just got 3/36, seems to me that guys are back to getting big deals.

    I don't believe salary has ever been collectively bargained to be tied to revenue, as it has for other sports. So, that is just as much the player's fault as it is ownership's.
