It’s not. Clearly not at the plate and he isn’t even allowed to play in the field.

Lopez’ body language just never instills any confidence. At this point he looks like he’s expecting bad stuff to happen. -

Strength of schedule/quality of opponent isn't what I see as a big determinant for the rest of this year. Got swept by Tampa, but by and large it seems like they been playing up or down to competition. Horribly inconsistent (or consistently bad?) at the plate regardless of pitcher quality. I'm hanging my hat on a more stable lineup/batting order with veteran hitters regressing to their historical K rates, with some younger players (finally!) getting their chances to stick.

Week in Review: A Tale of Two Series
OvertheHill replied to Nick Nelson's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
I'm on board with this take. Based on recent trends I was thinking that they'd go 1-5 on that trip; they go 2-4 so we fans should be ok if we were realistic about this being maybe an 85 win team. That said, I'm expecting them for go 4-2 this week. 5-1 would be a really good sign. -
Great article Cody. Many comments already above covering what is obvious to even casual fans; there’s an organizational philosophy to plate appearances that is severely degrading the product. So much coddling, rationalizing and excusing. If I were running things there would be a “Land of 10,000 K’s” vest a batter would be required to wear in the dugout after striking out. These guys would have worn it out already.

Trevor in the booth was practically begging for the Twins to be bunting on that Castro AB, correctly pointing out how difficult a play in general for the 3B it was. In the game that I grew up with, a left handed light hitting speed guy was essentially assumed to be doing that; it made all the sense in the world given the context of the 9th inning last night. But no evidence of that level of thinking in the Twins dugout. Besides, Trevor said it was "unpopular".

Forgetting the nuances for just one minute, it’s just plainly a bad product from the standpoint of entertainment. All of joy that I’ve come to rely on from even bad Twins teams has been sucked out of the experience. Pinch hitting for your best/most entertaining young hitters (based on what?) is just example. I’ve been joking with family members about whose Twins jersey they should invest in, and now we’re just dropping the subject altogether.

Edouard Julien Has a Blueprint to Work On
OvertheHill replied to Ted Schwerzler 's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
My overwhelming desire is for the Twins to let AK settle in a position, likely 1B where he's an average to plus fielder, and play at least 5 games a week if his wrist will have it. Set it and forget it hopefully. I'm somewhat puzzled by the desire by some to treat it in the future as a dumping ground for players who are poor fielders. We tried that with Sano, remember? That was comical at times. Wholeheartedly agree with the observations that having Buxton as a more or less permanent DH diminishes his value to the team and limits so many other lineup options. -
What Will The Twins Do in Center Field?
OvertheHill replied to Cody Schoenmann's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
Hoping maybe but not relying. Fair or not, he was rushed to majors and now a big part of his 2023 at AAA seems wiped out. I don't see a scenario where he's in position to take over CF in 2024. -
I wish I could be more optimistic about a reversal of fortunes but this team is built with these 3 true outcome types of hitters. It’s going to continue to be feast or famine, folks. Maybe a couple of more fundamentally sound guys (e.g. Lewis?) mixed in would help change the chemistry, but as it is we’re stuck with this mess. I hope the FO is happy; this fan is not.

Appreciate this analysis. Comforting that there are numbers that support my "gut feelings". Patience maybe paying off with Moran. De Leon looks the part to me, maybe as a lightning in a bottle guy this year? Willi fills a valuable role, especially with Gordon gone. I like that he has a different looking game than most of the regulars. Maybe our new Nick Punto.

Exactly. For good reason. Might be a super nice clubhouse guy but I don't know how that's going to really help things. And for me it's not just that he's had a couple of ill-timed bad outings this year. We were watching last year, and as it's been pointed out, he hasn't really been great since 2019. He must have a good agent....

Reevaluating the Twins’ Long-Term Third Base Plan
OvertheHill replied to Cody Christie's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
This is the first I've herd/read of a suggestion to transition Miranda to LF. Is that really an option? Have a hard time picturing him lumbering around out there.......- 36 replies

I don't disagree with any of this, but sometimes you just gotta move on. The events of the past 12 hours have actually caused me to research Ron Davis, to confirm if he was really as bad as we thought he was back in the day. He was remembered for spectacular and predicable failures at the backend of the bullpen. Pagan=Ron Davis for me.

Week in Review: Turning a Corner?
OvertheHill replied to Nick Nelson's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
I probably don't have of much value to add, but that's never stopped me....... Turned a corner? Not sure, but this week will tell us something. There's wide range of possible outcomes but I'm telling myself winning 3 games would be awesome, winning 2 is expected if we're really the team that I think/hope we are. Jax? Better than he looks lately for sure, but maybe we need to better realize his limitations. There was one inning a while back where the announcers were highlighting that he had thrown approx 10 consecutive sliders over 2 or 3 batters. Seems weird to me that they weren't getting him to use speeds better. Strangely I can't generate much vitriol toward the FO for the trades. You need to give something to get something usually. Decent, reliable/healthy starting pitchers are becoming unicorns. They don't make many Nolan Ryans these days. Sure is nice to see some signs of life as of late. -
Thanks Sherry for the great recap. I know it's only May, but these past two games have really lifted everyone's spirits out here. Especially considering that was a pretty good team we took 2 of 3 from. So happy to see contributions from Farmer and AK. Now let's take care of business against the Cubs. Their SP has been pretty good this year, so I'm expecting some late game heroics might be needed to get us over the top.

Would the Twins Make a Shakeup at Hitting Coach?
OvertheHill replied to Nick Nelson's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
I'm guessing that I may not be alone here in being deeply disappointed in the apparent stubbornness by this organization to make changes or adjustments to a formula that clearly isn't working. Been discussed here ad nauseam that this roster is built like the 2019 Bomba thing is coming back: spoiler alert, it's not. We have an organizational philosophy built on swing for the fences, undisciplined plate appearances, shoddy fielding and base running, and no apparent consequences. All those guys in the dugout look just a little too comfortable to me considering how poorly they're meeting the expectations of their job. Hopefully the Miranda thing focusses people a little. Miranda belongs in St. Paul to work on things, and I'm optimistic that he'll pan out eventually. As what, I'm not sure - he isn't going to magically morph into a plus fielder, and how many DH types do you really need? I'm honestly the last person to advocate change simply for the sake of change; baseball is a marathon yada yada. But there's a disturbing pattern here of complacency - high priced "stars" looking unprepared to start the season, and no one visibly upset in the dugout when they put garbage like the 7th inning yesterday out there. As pointed out, Baldelli's post game didn't have the sort of fire it should, if only to placate the fans. Maybe that's the point I'm laboring to make - the fans really don't seem to matter to this mess. It's supposed to be entertainment, but I'm not inclined to keep funding this. -
Padres 6, Twins 1: The Hits Just Keep Not Coming

I’ll give him credit when he starts refunding ticket purchases. Losing well played, hard fought games still passes for entertainment, but this product is both boring and putrid.- 58 replies

Week in Review: Bumpy Road
OvertheHill replied to Nick Nelson's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
I'll gladly flog that horse. I think it would be giving them too much credit for having any approach lately. Here's to hoping that there's a more enlightened approach to plate appearances in the near future.- 28 replies
