  1. Yet the Royals won it all last year with the best defense, one of the lowest strikeout staffs in the league, with a middling offense that managed to score runs. TK might have understood something. The difference between the best K/9 teams and the worst was between 1 and 2 K/9 Leaguewise K/9 did not start creeping up until the mid 90's That is also the timeframe for the start of the steroid era TK's era a better defense was more important than high strikeout pitchers. In the era of 4 or 5 strikeouts a game, not walking people was the best thing a pitcher could do. Times change, though KC has proven you do not need to be more than even league average K/9 to be successful
  2. Blake Swihart played 0 games in the minors before this year.. Of course a more experienced left fielder wouldn't have crashed into the wall and got hurt. Of course the move to the outfield caused Hector Olivra to go nuts at home, Gosh only knows what will happen to Ian Desmond
  3. Yes, but is he better than the other team's 3d starter? Lucky Latos and Rondon are not exactly great in the FIP department.
  4. Does St Peter make Pohlad money? When the answer sustains no there will be changes. Does there need to be someone above Ryan? To do what? Big picture thinking is the GM's job. Long term planning is the GM's job.
  5. Statistically or eye test? Bill James' "Runs Created" stats has him in tied for 60th place. Through the years in relation to current players, again, is about that spot. Not elite, but hardly non impact
  6. vacation, so I could not reply. It was not a jackpot ticket but not worth so little it would be thrown away
  7. Rasmussen is in his 60's. I do not think he is anything but stopgap. Does a drunk driving charge get you reassigned? Only if the management team thinks the stress at the major league level was too much. He will be somewhere after he is back somewhere after treatment.
  8. Delino DeShields and the 2015 West Champs Texas say hello. Jon Daniels cashed a winning lottery ticket.
  9. If there was zero chance the Twins would not have selected him. If there was a 100% chance he would be a major league pitcher, he would not have been made available for the rule 5 draft. Ball clubs have kept players for a year only to send them to the minors the next year. Gilmartin was only recently called up . Teams sign 46 round picks. Almost zero chance for success. Still have to try. Graham did not work for the twins. It was still worth the shot.
  10. Mauer signed a contract that no one would ever turn down. The complaints about him not being a 23 million dollar player . One too many bonks to the head and he is no longer the 5-7 WAR player he was. When he signed the contract I do not recall that there was anybody much saying it was a bad contract. That is the risk of long term contracts. Life isn't very kind sometimes. Life isn't fair. Joe can't be what he was, he can't be what he is not. Joe has never been considered a leader since he got done at Cretin. That was known when they signed him to the contract. Again, as a 5-7 WAR player, no big deal. From a leadership standpoint the Twins appear to have a big hole in their roster. The problem is that the veterans they have at position players are not the leadership type. The young guys who could lead all have a bigger problem called hitting the ball well enough to stay in the majors. Could money have fixed that problem? Maybe, Maybe not. Money sure fixed the pitching, didn't it? Spending money in and of itself does not fix a problem. Santana has been worth the money so far. Hughes before they extended him, not so much after. Rickie .... Spending money on scouting so every other year you get a Duffey, a decent reliever, and a position player fixes the problems. That is what you need to spend the money on.
  11. Jim Merrit for Leo Cardenas says hello What player did the Twins get for Dave Hollins? Yes one for one trades you generally get what you give up. Occasionally you get the player that thrives in a new environment
  12. Perhaps one of the minor league gurus can help me out on this. Meyer does not appear to have the greatest control in the world. He strikes out a fair percentage of the batters. In the minors when he pitches he does not walk as great of percentage as the small sample size in the majors. That may well be due to the better batting eye at the mlb level. As long as Meyer walks a large % of batters he will not have success as a major league pitcher. The differential between the % K and BB should be above 10 for a starter, It does not appear to me that they do not think that Meyer was going to get there the way he was throwing
  13. Takes forever to load because of the commercials Gave up waiting
  14. They fixed Pelfrey's arm, Crain never came back from the shoulder. Houston bet over 3 million that he could
  15. All you have to do is make it to your arb years. The reality is that Fantex sells shares at $10 a pop. For Duffey to get his money they would have to sell over 200,000 shares. Great publicity for the company. A little publicity for the company
  16. The point was that a career does not have to be that long to earn a large sum of money. Crain's career was shortened by injury as he was done by 32, a shortened career for a reliever. Semantics arguments. Romero spent a few years as set up, not the majority of his career. Again, if you feel that as a starter or reliever, if you think you are going to have a decent career, 20 million is obtainable, be it as a mid to back rotation starter like Pelfrey, a long career with a few good years, or a shortened excellent career. Taking the money, to me, is a sign the maybe Duffy is not very certain of his future
  17. Duffey got 2.23 million for 10% of future earnings. I would say that Duffy himself is not too sure of his future. Consider Pelfrey has hung around and will have over 46 million in career earnings. If you can hand around the back of the bullpen JC Romero made over 20 million before retiring in 2012 Crain made 22 million for a short career. Either Duffy is selling himself short, he isn't going to last, ore just got taken to the cleaners by a legal loan shark.
  18. Time passing Ryan by? Rather than safe 3-4 year college starters Ryan's staff has gone boom or bust with drafting. He probably could have had Ross Detwiler for Span. Ryan went high risk/ high reward. Ryan does not completely operate as he did in the past
  19. Astro's need 3 starting pitchers and McHugh and Keuchel are not doing so well either. McCullers has a shoulder injury. As it was they barely held off the Angels for the playoffs. I wouldn't be getting too excited until they figure out a starting pitching rotation that does not resemble the early 2000's Twins
  20. Some of the prospects sitting is all on Molitor. As much as people derided Gardy for not liking young players, Molitor appears more reluctant.
  21. If Nolasco keeps with his near 3 era and FIp] somebody in contention with a need for a starter will call. It all depends on health of the Twin's starters as well as contention status
  22. wimp pitchers can't take being hit by the ball. As bad as catchers who can't take bats bouncing off their heads.
  23. Hicks was DFA'd by Seattle. That should have been a red flag that the guy might be an AAAA kind of player. (100% opinion and Speculation alert) The Twins FO might have had some hope that the crack coaching staffs they employ could coach the player to a higher level. I would hazard a guess that after ST and the season progressed, the players in Chattanooga look like they could be of help so the 40th man on the roster was let go for someone else easily jettisoned if there is nothing there. . Hicks was a harmless flyer that should have normally had the people complaining that Turner was being blocked by a fringe player
  24. Obviously they thought John Hicks was not going to be it. Can they put a Darth Vader helmet on Joe? JUST KIDDING
  25. Sorry for the silliness. I will try to be serious with each and every post. If they needed a third catcher it would be easy enough to add one to the 40 man.
