Can’t disagree on defensive losses. Bader, the previous 3 seasons, has OPS totals of .650 - .622 - .656 respectively. I think Kiersey fills CF depth and Martin/Castro in corners and shift focus elsewhere (maybe 1B).

Seems to me that Martin and Miranda generate same or better offense at like positions. Castro & Martin in corner OF spots v. lefties. I’m usually very pro veteran for depth but it seems that at 35 and peak year 6 years ago (2019) the Team should fill spot with youth or via trade for a REAL contributor (maybe just a 1B)?. Grichuk, to me, made most sense for the cost….signed this week for $5M. Canha’s defensive flexibility and MLB experience are attractive though. Miranda has a “reverse splits” bat so he isn’t very effective against LH pitching. Also, there needs to be an alternative at 1B…………..I’m hoping they can scrape by a couple months and maybe Keaschall could fill that roll?

Yep! He looks like a Legion Ball pitcher that plays OF a couple times a week to get his bat into the line-up. One thing the author did not mention is his slow, indecisiveness after fielding the ball. He’s not thinking ahead enough and he looks up and assesses where he wants to throw (many times not where he should throw) to show off his arm. Coaching, & more attention to detail, (coaching), should help improve him greatly. Principally playing RF I would think will help as well since it will become more “routine”.

I’m not sure if you think better or worse with “above”. Assuming better? IMO, they have a great opportunity with Varland and Paddack in middle innings to be very good! Certainly they have more to like than those two…….pretty deep. Who’s going to be effective in ‘25?

No issues……I’m just stating Coulombe - Paddack - Topa - Stewart among others (Prielipp & Canterino) are all potential ????? Worrisome! Every Team has this issue on varying levels with their arms. It’s potentially, as you well know, how to get from “League best Pen” only on paper and #16 in reality at the end of a year.

Don’t disagree a bunch on Topa but Stewart doesn’t exactly have a lengthy string of successful seasons either. The Rule 5 guy is certainly expendable. Fingers crossed for a trade to open some spaces on 40 man.

Am hoping Lewis or Lee or Julien are hitting so well that Keaschall needs to be considered at 1B or at Corner OF…….seems that with the 3 guys mentioned that are on the 26 man, along with Castro, have this spot blocked for a bit. DeBarge sounds like nice upside!!

Severino deserves a bit of attention as a loooong shot but the other guys aren’t very appealing.

After last 6 weeks of ‘24, spreading the offensive load amongst more capable bats is what I see as the TEAM’s logical goal. Frankly, I don’t care about …..when Emma & Walker are on the roster…,, they aren’t now, and may not really both contribute until 2027. Lots of water under the bridge for our pitchers and key vets between now and then! Team can always move somebody from a position of strength (that has actually been achieved) in another year or two. If not mortgaging the future, try to WIN NOW! Quero may be a great option - I am not familiar with him?

“In another year Matthews will be similar to Woo or Miller…” - that’s a really bold statement! Haven’t heard anything like that about Zebby. MAYBE in 2 years, IMO - he’s got some real development left to do. To your point on value, should Twins start with an offer of Matthews and Henriquez and maneuver from there?

Sounds nice BUT one has to execute the additional high level pitcher trade AND you have 1 year of that pitcher v. the control with Ryan & Ober………the one year of availability is what sours me more. Duran & Matthews for Casas seems attractive and fair for both sides - close?

He was a rookie & then played 63 games in his two seasons. Expecting more than 1.7 WAR from a mediocre defensive player seems unreasonable. His average OPS is .830 - that works for me at the league minimum. Duran & Matthews should work for the Red Sox.

Yes! Pushed for this very thing here in November/December…….seems like a win-win as they cannot rely on Chapman to be their backend by himself - not at this point in his career.

Paddack is up in the air as you state - IMO, he brings great value at $7.5M as an 80-100 inning guy. Couple times a week from PEN as well as dropping him into a 3-5 inning spot start once a month. A real weapon to me! Team needs more offense and a reasonable solution at 1B & C in the long-term. Duran seems to be the high value guy that would attract a “real player” from another club - not a “highly touted” or “nice upside” ….. a Catcher ……..OR, T. Casas for 1B, he has been a target of mine for 3 months. Hope SOX sign Bregman & Casas is freed up to move. Vazquez to a team that has young catching depth - for one of their guys - along with Duran and a young starter OR a guy like Henriquez or Tonkin? Gotta be a real player - immediate contributor. Blewett …….Paddack & Varland…….Alcala & Topa……. Coulombe & Sands…….. Jax. This seems like a group to roll with along with another 3-4 guys behind them & worth moving Duran for some offense. If they can get offense and keep Duran - wonderful!!

Alcala was in 54 games and threw 58 1/3 innings………the 2-3 inning at a time storyline isn’t real. In the timeframe where he was used more often than an inning at a time, earlier in the season, he had a 1.56 ERA (34 2/3 innings prior to All-star break). He had 3-4 bad outings through the year…….one, he was last guy in the Pen & had to finish, and another was the Texas debacle. He’s a good pitcher that had mostly great success………..but his problems aren’t due to the Manager as all relievers (pitchers/players) stumble sometimes through a season. His mental stamina and command will drive his success going forward.

Agreed. His fastball velocity is fine - his elevation with that pitch and his ability to throw it at the knees is great! His secondary, off-speed stuff & command will elevate his spot in the rotation over time……if he gets to Ober’s level at any point, he’s good enough for me. Ober is a solid #2 on probably 24-25 teams.

Let’s see them stay healthy and perform at a lower level for 6 weeks before burning veteran’s availability to the club.

Agreed on SWR fitting in at #4 or #5 ……still in age 24 season and proven at MLB level. Lee, on the other hand, may drift down into the #5-#6 range for me…….not sure how injured he was after having time off for back issue? He was OK in the field with flashes of. rey good - at the plate he looked like a guy just trying to lay the bat on the ball, far too often. Sooo many weak ground balls to second base - often tough to watch. From what I saw of Brooks and what I read about Keaschall, the latter may be playing 2B by July 1.

Preach!! ……to me it’s disrespectful to assume Matthews is somehow more valuable after SWR proved his value in ‘24. Matthews is a year older and at least a year behind SWR’s development…...not his fault, but he was in A ball last May………. SWR needs an out pitch - personally, I think it’s his slider. He needs to find another pitch or just better command to set up his slider. His ERA (in a protected role) was very solid outside 3 rough starts. I think he can get to 30-31 starts and 165 innings in ‘25. If he keeps the ERA at 4.00 range or better, he’s a solid a developing 4 or 5 starter……that’s all he’s needed to do.

One of your opening statements was that Sands was probably the 2nd most effective reliever in ‘24. His fastball velocity was up in ‘24 in the role he was used in regularly. With these things being true, there doesn’t seem to be any logical reason to move him from a role where he is thriving. “Most innings out of PEN in ‘24….”……. Same comments the past 3-4 months regarding Jax. Why? The Team has 5 starters in place coming out of ‘24……….in addition, Paddack & Varland are very solid options as long guys - bridge guys - 5/6 games as spot starters as needed through the year, with Paddack up first in those opportunities. Headrick is also a viable 1.2 - 2.0 inning guy. These 3 mixed with Stewart & Topa additions to Alcala - Sands - Jax - Duran infers a very solid PEN. Festa - SWR - Ryan - Ober - Lopez ……..Morris - Raya - Matthews - Lewis - Culpepper……,I realize 2-3 pitchers may get traded to try and help with a real Catcher or someone to play 1B that can hit. I don’t see any need to compromise the PEN to experiment in trying to find another starter!

My assumption on Grichuk being on the couch is that the market wants to pay him $5-$8M & his agent wants him to sign for $11-$14M. He’ll get signed w/o a problem. 140 OPS+ is pretty attractive, even if it’s a peak season for him. Santana hit 23 HR’s and won a Gold Glove…..so there’s that upside that probably drove his $12M. Guardians don’t overpay too often!
