Padres 6, Twins 2: Stuck in the Middle-Innings With You
JD-TWINS replied to Matt Braun's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
San Diego signed France to a Minor League deal in February …….per last night’s broadcast. Twins picked up Gomez after a DFA from Tampa……….. look at Clemens over the last 150 games he’s played. Ya just never know……..Ryan Kreidler held it together fo 8-10 weeks somehow.- 36 replies

Padres 6, Twins 2: Stuck in the Middle-Innings With You
JD-TWINS replied to Matt Braun's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
I looked……. Dodgers have 5 guys above 100 OPS+ & White Sox have 2, both have 3 or so other guys that hover just on either side of the 100 mark.- 36 replies

Padres 6, Twins 2: Stuck in the Middle-Innings With You
JD-TWINS replied to Matt Braun's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
C - 144 1B - 102 2B - 110 3B - 99 SS - 109 LF - 116 CF - 130 RF - 109 DH - 109 Lee dropped below 100 just last night……..can’t imagine there are too many line-ups 1 -9 that have OPS+ over 100. Kreidler - Caratini - Jackson - Roden are pretty typical #10-#13 guys on many rosters. The assembled group has guys performing at pretty good levels……. there are highs & lows, maybe too often, but that’s baseball.- 36 replies

Padres 6, Twins 2: Stuck in the Middle-Innings With You
JD-TWINS replied to Matt Braun's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
Never understood the extreme fan hype with Prielipp? He hardly pitched for 4+ years…..he is fatigued, to be expected ….as much mentally as his body……so Yes & Yes. He has arm talent but way too often he only has 1 or 2 of his 5 pitch mix……that’s difficult to navigate! Not sure either of those guys are assumed to be in the Rotation? Matthews is a horse but very spotty in starts…..to me, he’d thrive in the occasional 5th inning+ but often appearing in the 6th-7th inning role. His 4 ram velocity could be maximized and he could trim 2 of his 6 pitches……hopefully, he’d gain command. Prielipp would be a solid #6 to start the season ………he’d have a real opportunity at some time by mid-May to mid-June due to injury in Minneapolis or lack of performance. I think Rojas is even money with either of these two for a starting role in ‘27. Bradley - Kremer - Lopez - Ryan - Abel/Ober all seem to be ahead of Matthews/Prielipp/Rojas, if everyone’s healthy.- 36 replies

Padres 6, Twins 2: Stuck in the Middle-Innings With You
JD-TWINS replied to Matt Braun's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
No Walks ! None! Guy that started was a flip of the coin choice for San Diego …….. got him in trouble a couple times but just swinging at nearly every delivery…….run his pitch count up with just a bit of selectivity…..come on…☹️ I’m not sure if Larnach has walked twice in the last 3 weeks? …….he’s got 41 for the season……swinging at all kinds of pitches down & out of the zone……looks lost right now, that sucks! They know Mize & likewise…….gotta touch him up to avoid their Big 3-4 guys out of the PEN! Chasing a playoff spot & coming off a solid sweep of the Braves……….2 hits v. journeyman is not cool……it’s like they were facing some dominant guy like Randy Dobnack! Lots of emphasis on Golf Wednesday evening & Thursday………I know they need to relax and they’re human………just didn’t seem to have the proper focus Friday.- 36 replies

Pretty sure he had 2 quick outs & then walked the #8 & #9 guys………he’s got great stuff! However it’s pretty clear that the Rays were doubtful he’d ever consistently be “sound between his ears”…….needs to mature with more failures & sucesses.

Prielipp may get sent down for a 10 day break……..assuming Ryan is back in next 10 days….he threw off the mound on Wednesday. Anderson was intriguing in his appearances! At some point, he may be the better long/variable option than Adams? Rojas stats are ALL very positive, other than walk rate. Ober/Rojas seem like a nice combination of very different looks in a game every 5th day. Ryan, Bradley, Matthews, Kremer, Ober/Rojas by the end of the month…………do guys have to be on active roster on Sept 1 to be Playoff Eligible?

Last 15 games …….he ‘s been pretty bad…….swinging at pitches he laid off of almost all year. First 110 games pretty SOLID! IMO, he should be a lock for DH in a platoon with Keaschall & Buxton. Pick a 15-35 game stretch for Lee - Lewis - Buxton - Keaschall- Bell……..ALL have been terrible for long stretches. I REALLY don’t understand the dominant thinking here that the Team can’t afford to pay anyone? They spent $50M more in ‘23 than in ‘26. The owner says “they need to spend more”. …….”Baseball”, after negotiations this off-season, is going to have some minimum spending expectations for Teams to get their revenue share going forward. In ‘27, Buxton makes $15.5M - Ryan is at $13-$19M - Lopez is at $22,5M - Caratini is at $10M including his ‘28 buyout……Correa’s $10M owed……..that ‘s around $75M………..On paper, Bell & Jeffers are gone ($12M)…….they have Lee-Lewis-Clemens-Keaschall-Martin, all at LOW cost - maybe $8-$9M total?……..back to $74M at this point. Kremer-Hoffman….$15M(?) Ober & Larnach …….$13M(?) total. That’s $102M ………everyone else is at minimum or pretty close (i.e. Sands/Banda)……this includes Larnach & Ober. I do not understand why the Team has to” be careful” not to spend on any existing player that contributes???

TWINS are in the mix & own tiebreakers with: Toronto 4-3 Houston 4-2 Boston 5-1 Baltimore 3-3 Need 1 of 3 in home Guardian Series (up 6-4) Need 2 of remaining 6 w/Tigers (up 5-2) Need 1 of remaining 3 w/Texas (up 3-0) Down 4-3 so far with White Sox w/6 left Team is 3 games under .500 overall & swept by Dodgers - Pirates - Reds - Phillies…….0-12!- 47 replies

I think the sentiment is …….”after giving up 24 runs in 3 games” ……… as well as “v. the Team that’s been leading the NL East all year”…….it’s nice to see the Staff dominate v. a good Club.- 47 replies

Phillies 7, Twins 5: This One Might Have Done It
JD-TWINS replied to Hans Birkeland's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
Not sure if Bench calls pitches - Catchers call pitches - Pitchers call pitches?? Whoever thought it was a good idea to not throw another high fastball to Arraez, with 2 strikes on him, needs to look at themselves in the mirror when blame for this loss is placed. Throwing another high fastball was a no risk pitch with Luis. An off speed pitch away but over the plate, to the best contact hitter in the game for 5 straight years……..brain dead! Result, typical flare to left field that Martin couldn’t make a play on - game SHIFTS! Arraez had taken a questionable fastball strike above the zone - then swung through next high fastball - he either fouls off, or pops up, or K’s- 81 replies

Hind sight is always a solid way to determine what should have been done. Jeffers was a FA rental…… not sure what level of quality the 2 starting pitchers would be, traded for Ryan & Larnach?- 81 replies

Phillies 7, Twins 5: This One Might Have Done It
JD-TWINS replied to Hans Birkeland's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
After getting to this point, they might as well get the real sum of games played through the A’s series ……… 9 more games……..that still leaves 28 games for any call-ups if it’s even more obvious to punt. “How bad Twins are” is not the only fact/variable in the Playoff Race. After getting swept, they are 1.5 games out of the last Wildcard. They’ve gone 4-10……still in the mix. Is it feasible to go 6-4 over next 10?- 81 replies

IF Team is trying “to make a push”, you are absolutely correct. However, they are 60-65 and need to go 23-14 to end up “in the mix” at 83-79. If 83-79 gets them into the Playoffs, to me, would be a minor miracle……..let alone going 23-14. The Twins & Guards are tied for 10th (11th) in the 15 Team American League for real perspective, today. Jenkins is 21. Rodriguez is 23 and a habitually injured guy that strikes out way too much. Wallner is 29 & needs to go somewhere after this season. 40 man spot difficulties are not really difficulties, plenty of options to move someone……………who does the Team move up? Here’s another question, who thinks that Allen Roden is any sort of long-term option for the Club??? Why is he playing (going forward) if he’s got no chance of sticking in the OF? Is he going to displace Rodriguez in the pecking order going into ‘27? I can hardly force myself to watch Matt Wallner play MLB. However, if Team is trying to take a flyer on a guy to provide a spark, a desparate guy who’s been there may be the best shot???
-
He cannot throw ….. playing Luke in RF is a glaring show of the Team’s lack of real options. Martin wasn’t great/good in his transition from the dirt to the OF 2-3 seasons ago - he’s at least adequate now. Keaschall should be able to transition to LF with a bit of off-season work and the all of Spring Training. He won’t be good but he’ll at least approach adequate. He may need to take a sedative before the game to ever be worthwhile on defense? He’s way overcharged everywhere he plays! The strong desire from 80% or so of the regulars here at TD to think that getting Larnach off the roster is a must…….I don’t get it from a baseball view. Being bored with Trevor is understandable. Moving him so “we can see if some prospect can hit 🤞” makes no sense to me. Being excited about the “potential promise” of prospects I get, from an emotional perspective. Rationally though, Larnach was a #1 pick, highly touted, out of college. He struggled with some injuries and it’s been determined he shouldn’t hit v. LH pitching with any regularity. He’s had 2 good years in a row when platooned (‘24 & ‘26). He too was a great prospect …… until reality set in and it took parts of 3 seasons to get to his ‘24 level. He’s easily as good in LF now than Keaschall may ever be. ……. Be careful what you wish for is my point ……. change for change sake, is that the best course of action? He’s perfect for Platoon at DH v. RH pitching with Keaschall or Buxton or Gonzalez …….or whoever, being the RH side of the platoon. Buxton is going to miss 25% of the season with injuries, at a minimum, forever. Jeffers is gone. Larnach, with Buxton out, is the best hitter on the Team v. RH pitching (70-75% of pitchers)…….He strikes out much less - his OBP is up…….yes, his salary might be $7-$8M going forward? That’s what Caratini makes - Bell makes - in other words a pretty affordable salary for an above average hitter, without question. There’s still room for Keaschall - Jenkins - Rodriguez - Buxton - Martin………whoever deserves a spot on the 26 man.
-
The “should have traded for prospects in ‘26” talk in general, I can’t get my head around. Buxton is somewhere in the OF for 2 more years ……. if advantageous for Team, could probably extend a year or two on a Team friendly deal, with his attitude about “staying a Twin!”……..Keaschall is probably moving to LF permanently to account for his weak arm. ……Jenkins - Gonzalez ….. maybe Rodriguez are ALL strong candidates for future OF……. Mendez too has an outside shot. Culpepper - Houston - Lee - Lewis make up the core of the infield for 3-6 years to come. Festa - Matthews - Banda - Sands - Prielipp - Raya - Rojas - Predes - Acton are all in a position to help the Bullpen, as needed, in ‘27 …….. Morris - Gomez - Funderburk - Hoffman - Nance are a very good core to start from in ‘27. Bradley - Ryan - Lopez - Kremer - Abel - Ober is a sound core for a rotation. Catchers - Diaw, Lackey & Tinney ….. with Tait out a bit longer, seem to haveTeam covered for 6-8 years - right? Assuming the CBA negotiations get players some “spending floor” from ownership…….I think our present 2nd best hitter, after Jeffers leaves, Larnach ……he gets offered a deal in arbitration to be the primary DH v. all RH pitching……….. with $$ to spend, I think Ober gets arbitration offer too at some modest total. Clemens - Martin & even Minter (with spending floor) could all be back one more year to fill roles. Frankly, I can’t worry about more than just through the ‘28 season with all that changes each year - that are unforeseen. I like the Club going forward over the next few years with pieces already in the organization. Not saying PLAN to stagnate but I don’t think there should be any desperation to ACT swiftly. FA’s - always have an open mind! ….. QO Jeffers if realistic to bridge for another year….. can’t imagine he’d sign.

I have no rational argument that they go 22-14 either. They play a number of not very good Teams over these last 36, but the Braves & Yankees & Padres are 9 of those, along with White Sox for 6. UPHILL battle for sure! 5-8 v. Royals 0-3 v. Pirates 0-3 v. Reds Shown face to face results above aren’t those of a Playoff Team.

Pleaded - begged - rationalized that the Club go after Arraez, HARD. Wanted him to protect Buxton or Jeffers or Lewis by hitting 3,4,or 5. Last 7 games 3 - 3 - 2 - 1 - 1 runs in 5 of the games. Bullpen is certainly at a point of reasonable respectability after deadline. Six guys that can get batters out, generally. Rogers & Adams can give them innings when trailing. Needed a consistent contributor on the offensive side. …..hoping Buxton or Lewis (talented guys) are going to be good (Bell) consistently is “wishful, blue sky thinking”!

Stating the obvious here - if a team has 3 deep playoff runs in 20 years and makes the playoffs 3 other times…….that’s 14 years of OK to Bad ………….6-7 of those 14 years can be assumed to be Bad. The winning and attendance are generally in lock step…,,,towns like St. Louis come out regardless …….but, as the Team that’s won 2nd most World Series, there’s a pretty solid case of winning tradition to overcome the lulls.
