How about just not starting SWR, now 0-8 on the season. He gave Team a chance in maybe 2 of his starts. He had 2 decent relief appearances but they can’t piece together a fifth starter (consistently) so he goes out today after throwing relief on Monday. 7.69 ERA ……..if Team wins 2 of his starts they are a game over .500 right now. E-Rod, thumb surgery, out through at least August. Jenkins is hurt - not performing at a high level (been OK & spotty good) - he’s 21. No need to bring him up just because fans want him to be a star NOW.
-
Larnach walked with 2 outs in a PH role in Boston Series to put team ahead. 2 days ago he doubled in the first and then scored the first run of the game. His OBP is .381 going into today - hitting .267 with a .9 WAR through 1/3 of the season. He’s easily the 3rd best performer at the plate this year - easily! Let’s trade him and hope Emma can play, oh he’s hurt again & out for 3 months…….. because he’s an apparent rock head who slides into 1B head first. Jenkins is 21 - not ready - and probably hurt. But by all means, trade Larnach because he’s arrogant after Wallner got demoted - great idea!
-
E-Rod is done for season - out til Sept. 1. Jenkins hasn’t shown enough to be up very soon. Not really sure why many are anxious to trade Larnach? Best year defensively and solid offensively with .385 OBP to date through 55 games. Larnach was highly touted, just like E-Rod ……. I’d like to see Rodriguez actually stay healthy and hit for couple months at MLB prior to sending guys that are performing down the road. Emma has been hurt and has missed considerable time every year for at least 4 seasons. Builds zero confidence in him! Jenkins hasn’t been very durable either - he’s 21, so I don’t see Team pushing him up this year unless he’s on fire at AAA. IMO, Martin becomes a Utility OF when anyone else (other than Buxton) posts a .350 OBP …….guys don’t get starting spots due to fan curiosity or assumptions they will perform. Last, James Outman is not a tradable player unless lumped in with 1-2 other players that are sought after.

How many less innings would this years starters have logged with Varland - Jax - Stewart - Duran ……. an effective Topa ……. a healthy Sands in the 2026 PEN? Managing isn’t that mysterious. The real Manager’s effect is behind the scenes …….., attitude - setting expectations - promoting proper Team demeanor…… it seems Shelton has had a very positive influence in that regard.

Joe Ryan and the Elephant in the Room
JD-TWINS replied to Nick Nelson's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
Can the Team stay where they are at currently through July 15th? …..,,,not fighting for the Division but within 3-4 games of the 5th-6th Wild Card. If Jeffers is back at 85% of what he’s done to date in ‘26, it’s a big shot in the arm. If Abel or Festa is able to pitch at a competent level by July 15, something good happens to the PEN………,probable that Prielipp gets moved to pitch more often but just an inning or two at a time……or, if it’s Festa, he’s in the PEN. Nothing is etched in stone ……. nobody knows if the pessimists are correct or if the optimists are correct? IF they are “in the mix” in 45 days, will Tom Pohlad promote buying a BAT via trade as the deadline approaches? Nobody trades an everyday position player of value if they are in the race …….. nobody is trading for Ryan that’s not in the race…….. “prospects” to another team to allow for a real possibility at the Playoffs this season, to me the only way to be “competitive” through September……if anyone cares? To me, Arcia & Gray can handle SS for 4 months or until Culpepper is called up. Keaschall isn’t going anywhere in ‘26 (ride or die w/him). So, Kreidler is the OF depth along with another step shown last night, Clemens in CF ……… pretty clear sign that nobody with a TC hat wants to see Outman in the line-up any longer! Gonzales back up for a DFA’d Outman once he’s eligible to come back …,… 10 day waiting period? Gotta happen. CLEMENS in CF last night - pretty clear sign!!! -
Injury riddled career in MiLB through ‘25. Comes into ‘26 having a real clean shot for the SHOW. Matt Wallner does everything in his power, save injury, to clear a path for Emma. Rodriguez……..inexplicably, slides head first into FIRST base and tears up his thumb & essentially ends his season as he won’t be able to have a shot at starting over at AAA until September 1. I realize Emma is dejected & the situation is unfortunate. From a “fan’s perspective” it makes one question Emma’s intelligence. He’s been hurt significant amounts of time every year for 4 years. Tough to be a fan of a guy that’s typically not available. Hopefully, this will push the organization into being very clear that NOBODY is to slide into first base going forward. Unnecessary!

Prophetic - as 8 hours later Adams appears to have gotten lit up in Game 3 at Chicago. I couldn’t watch any more after the 4th but this morning I see a grand slam - another homer - 5 earned runs over his one inning. Ouch! …….. he is the current weak link. Gomez will always be adventurous due to lack of strike throwing, far too often.

I understand your point of view - I just disagree. Looking at a guy’s entire career when talking about expected performance this week and beyond seems like a stretch. What did Bryce Turang do in ‘24 vs. ‘25 & ‘26? Things change - both for good and bad. What are “expectations” based on metrics for Bailey Ober? Do we look at Trevor Rogers entire career and project that he will be dominant because he was 6 years ago? Banda threw 65 innings last year and had a 3.18 ERA. Year prior he threw 49 1/3 innings and had a 3.08 ERA………. do I expect him to match those numbers? No. Do I think he can contribute in his role and have a manageable ERA of around 4.00 through the year? Yes.

There’s no guarantees in sports/baseball but I would have to suggest, relative to maintaining level of offense or improving, that without Lewis and Wallner hanging around the line-up with the effect of an anvil, they have a good shot! Just as the PEN has improved by displacing non-performers ……… the slow & average production from a combination of guys like Kreidler - Gray - Arcia ……….. along with a shot in the arm from ONE or TWO young players at some point, has me hopeful for the remainder of the season.

Yes - eye test tells one that w/o looking up stats. My thought is he may be paired v. other Team’s best pitcher or at least Top 2 pitcher ….,., certainly has an effect on runs scored. It’s unfortunate as Joe has been very, very solid. Ober may win 15-18 games with current success rate. Opposition pitcher matters……, ”good fortune” comes into play as well. Are Outman & Caratini in the line-up …… that matters also.

It took for Matt Wallner to get to -1.3 for a couple weeks to get demoted & Outman can play OF. I agree, a change would be welcomed but until a lefty OF bat steps up in St Paul, we’ll have to live with James.

Today’s PEN has 5 new faces since the season started in late March. Banda - Orze - Rogers remain from the original 8. All 3 have had a bad spot or 4 but generally they have been pitching well in big spots. Gomez - Adams - SWR - Morris - Rojas being added over the past 3-4 weeks has really upgraded the velocity and talent. As experience continues to build, I like their chances going forward! This group combined has an ERA in low 2’s over the past 17 games……. that works! IF Abel and/or Festa come back in July sometime, and Sands returns after getting to 100%………….. they have depth and even more potential upside. The loss of Jeffers is a huge blow! Need to figure out a way to create 4 runs/game with this offense and they’ll win more than they lose.

So, Team had the intestinal fortitude (sense) to Option Lewis and Wallner with obvious positive results on MLB Club, to date. James Outman can’t bunt - struck out 4 times on Tuesday night - is hitting .165ish. Kreidler can play similar OF defense …… he doesn’t hit LH, but Outman doesn’t hit RH pitching either…….so Team needs to make a move. Need a 13th bat - I don’t care who it is from AAA, there HAS TO BE a better option in St Paul! Already living on the edge with Gray & Kreidler at the plate for weeks ……… can’t imagine they continue to perform……… sure hope so. Arcia won’t continue to hit .533 but it seems obvious that with his start at AAA and a handful of games back in the Show, he’s turned a page at the plate!! My point is the Team needs guys that can potentially contribute - nobody thinks any positive thoughts when James Outman comes to the plate.

.462 BA with RISP ……. agreed, Lee’s ability to contribute at the plate with some really big hits mixed in is a nice step forward!

They had one run through NINE innings on Monday and two runs through TEN innings on Tuesday. ……… They have won 3 games when they scored 3 or less through 55 games……. they have lost 16 of those games. (That’s not a “bullpen issue”) So they have scored 3 or less in 19 of 55 games …….. 35% of the time. Have 6 or more runs in a dozen games 9-10-11 -11 -13 in five of them. Scoring runs is great! CONSISTENTLY getting 4 runs will lead to Wins.

The first two years he pitched considerable innings were his last two in L.A. ……. 49 plus & 65 innings respectively. His ERA in those years was 3.08 & 3.18. I’ve seen her that his “advanced metrics” would show he isn’t as competent as those two year’s ERA would suggest. IMO, he threw 114 innings over last two years with a combined 3.14 ERA. Even if he’s a run higher on ERA in ‘26, he’s got value and can be effective in spots. During the broadcast last night they said that going into the game, the PEN’s ERA over last 16 games was 2.40. ……… that’s a third of the season, so far. Now have guys that “can contribute” generally, for months to come. Adams - Gomez - Orze - Rogers - Banda - Morris - SWR - Rojas …….. if they can continue to not “get overworked”, they are a competent group. Nobody is dominant, for sure. Velocity uptick and lesser pitch mix for SWR adds to his value - Gomez & Morris bring some velocity, along with Rojas. These guys weren’t in the mix the first 35-40 games of the season. 5 games into a stretch of 17 days w/o an off day ……….. PEN will be tested!

Royce Lewis Needs to Have an Open Mind
JD-TWINS replied to Tom Froemming's topic in Twins Minor League Talk
My view for “the future”, if Lewis solves his struggles in the batter’s box, is Lee at 1B and Lewis at 3B. That’s probably a 2027 reality, if ever. At some point, Houston at SS and Culpepper at 3B If Lewis hits & Lee hits they’ll find their way into the line-up. Keaschall needs to continue to lift his offensive output or he’ll be displaced first by Arcia and then by Lee ……… assuming Lewis is fixed. -
Sox are much BETTER but they aren’t Cleveland good……. Cleveland is 1/2 game behind Yankees and currently are 3rd in A.L. … Sox didn’t score after the 2nd inning today. Both Cleveland and Sox are a respectable 15-10 at home ……. The Sox are 11-14 on the road and Cleveland is 17-13 on the road.

Quality start, even giving up 3 runs through 2 innings. SWR did a nice job. Both pitchers had a WHIP of 1.00…….struck out 7 over 8 innings. Offense - 8 base runners through nine innings. Can’t beat anyone scoring one run.

No, there’s one more year of control with an option from both sides at $13M for ‘27. Team has control through ‘27 if they opt in ………. Joe can sit or try to re-negotiate but he can’t play elsewhere unless Team cuts him or trades him.

Buxton is very affordable and probably a Top 20 player in the game. Trading him, just as he’s come into his own at the plate (with more consistency) is nuts. He will not allow a trade - seems to have made that clear a number of times. Front office seems to have identified 3 pretty good prospects from 3 pretty good organizations ………. Rojas - Abel - Bradley all 3 from the “terrible trade deadline moves of ‘25”. Edward Tait & a couple others with potential on top of the 3 young arms. Jeffers will be more difficult to trade after the broken hand/wrist and with no contract past this season………..Pohlad should step up with a respectable 3 year offer …….. he may bite Ryan is tradable anytime, if healthy. Deadline trade may make sense IF Team is not in playoff mix ……… helping a contender this year with one year of control helps his value stay high…………he’s an off-season trade piece if they keep him through the year.

FEDKO Love is a little overstated in my opinion - the guy hit .227 at AA in ‘24. In ‘25 he got to St Paul at beginning of August and had pretty solid numbers In ‘26 his numbers standout …….. he’s played 84 TOTAL games over parts of 2 seasons at AAA. People here stating the front office is incompetent for not already having him on the MLB roster is nuts, IMO. AAA is “easy for Lewis” but Fedko’s success over a relatively short period has him MLB ready ………. I’ll leave it to the baseball people to make baseball decisions on talent and readiness. This is the same “worthless front office” that kept Gray - Kreidler - Arcia around while many here wanted to, “play the young guys and see how they do” …….. that’s what AAA is gor

I’ve been as down on his performance this year and much of last year as anyone. Calling for him to be sent down 3 weeks plus earlier than it happened. That said, 24 months ago, he was “the one guy we can’t consider trading….” & that was based on MLB results to that point. It’s a willingness with his approach to hit the ball hard to Right Center - control the strike zone better (see Austin Martin’s changes) - and having actual (not visual w/eye black & grins) CONFIDENCE that he’s able to handle MLB pitching. I guess that’s “hitting 101” but we’ve seen him do these things ………… hope he finds his way back! Don’t want to entertain a call-up until he can maintain this high level AAA play for another 3 weeks - he needs to toughen mentally for a bit.
