He still scares me. Doing better as he doesn't let the runners score when they load the bases, but there are still runners out there against him. Baby steps.

Agreed. Mikey Perez, probably temporarily to cover for Steer, is up with the Saints right now. Rucker's #'s surprised me. I didn't know he was doing this well at high A. Severino is really hitting now!

Twins Acquire Tyler Mahle from Reds
FlyingFinn replied to Ted Schwerzler 's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
With Miranda looking like the real deal, I think that opens up dealing CES. Hajjar is the one that concerns me but he is a long ways away from the majors. We got rid of both of our lefty starting pitchers from the 2021 draft. -
Covid related. Didn't count as using up an option.

Sabato is the minor league version of Miguel Sano's prior years. Start out dreadfully slow and then get hot in the middle of summer. Last year was the same thing for Sabato. Urbina and Severino continue their recent hot streaks. Twins radio announcers said SWR's IL stint was Covid. I'm always reading things into the box scores, usually wrong, but ECS gets taken out of the game for a pinch runner. Injury or is he getting traded..............or just strategy I haven't seen used with him before?

Minor League Report (7/30): Edouard Julien Goes Nuclear
FlyingFinn replied to Matt Braun's topic in Twins Minor League Talk
Most guys seem to struggle for a while when they get moved up. Adams moved up and gets blasted. Headrick pitched well tonight but was hit hard in his first game. Gipson-Long, same thing. The bats are no different - Wallner off to a slow start the Saints. Being called up to the Twins can result in the same thing - Miranda, Kirilloff, Larnach all struggled (though Larnach had a short spurt of success first). ECS and Steer seem to be the exceptions to struggling when moving up. Makes me wonder if the Twins have to be patient with guys like Cano and Moran. Tough to let them fail too much though with the playoff hopes we have.- 10 replies

Someone in TD was asking for more power to make Palacios a MLB SS. He answered with a couple homers tonight. Varland with another decent game and Balazovic with another clunker. Both are consistent this year.

Twins Minor League Report (7/28): Tim Beckham Calls Game
FlyingFinn replied to Nash Walker's topic in Twins Minor League Talk
Agreed! Urbina and Severino continue to play well. Gipson-Long had a rough 1st inning but then dominated. Hope he's adjusting to moving up one level. CES not only hits but, if I remember correctly, he seems to do well in clutch situations and not just when the game is out of hand and the other team brings in a mop-up pitcher.- 29 replies

Twins Minor League Report (7/27): Banuelos Blasts a Pair
FlyingFinn replied to Ted Schwerzler 's topic in Twins Minor League Talk
The Saints just don't seem to be able to supply the Twins with any more effective relief pitchers. We don't seem to like Ian Hamilton. Schulfer is talked about but he got hit pretty hard last night. Wichita and Fort Myers had almost no offense, Urbina supplying most of the hits in the Mussels double header. Carr looked great but the bullpen was terrible. Cedar Rapids just keeps rolling. Get a bad start and it doesn't matter. The bats take care of that deficit. Severino having a great week so far.- 3 replies

Short but nice returns from the IL for Enlow and SWR. CES just hits, at every level. Great game from Severino as well. Should be a lot of changes to these rosters in August - trades, moves to cover holes from trades, and maybe some draft picks being assigned but it seems the Twins really ease these players in slowly.

I disagree. When you add in free agent signings in the offseason, we don't have enough dead weight on the 40 man without eventually releasing some players who would have trade value now (might also be more cost effective to trade for a decent contract than pay top dollar to a free agrent). Plus, you can only carry so many guys that may not hit the majors next season. Otherwise, the way MLB teams are moving guys up and down so often, you run out of options, etc. for players.

Trade Rumor: Twins still linked to Frankie Montas
FlyingFinn replied to Otto von Ballpark's topic in Minnesota Twins Talk
SWR (still 21), Festa, Povich, Hajjar, Raya - all 22 or younger. The Twins had 3 or 4 at least partial graduates to the big leagues this year - Duran, Jax, Moran and Ryan. Balazovic is the big disappointment this year. I'm hoping that Canterino (in the bullpen), one of Sands/Varland, and Festa make the jump next year to the Twins for at least part of the season. Not counting the Saints, there are a lot of good, not great, pitchers in our minor leagues. Less of this group will make it through to the Twins but 1 every year from this group would be good (Jax would be the one I would have classified here - honestly, I didn't think he could pitch as well as he's doing this year). -
Post Draft: Who is the Twins' Top Prospect?
FlyingFinn replied to Cody Christie's topic in Twins Minor League Talk
Two questions - did the Twins hitting coaches totally mess up Martin by reworking his swing? Also, the injury he has had this year is a thumb injury. Has he had that most of the year and they just recently decided it was enough to hit the IL? Maybe that has affected his #'s. If either of those is true, the Twins can't trade him now as he will get better by next year, at least if it's a thumb injury causing problems.- 35 replies

Get to Know Twins Draft Pick Tanner Schobel

How much did he sign for? I see we had to pay Lee a little extra. -
Twins Thrilled with Draft's First Night
FlyingFinn replied to Seth Stohs's topic in Twins Minor League Talk
Obviously, if even half of these guys end up good enough to play MLB, the Twins will have to make some trades. I like the 'pick the best player available' strategy. Ages: Polanco - 29, Arraez 25, Miranda and Steer 24, Lewis, Martin, Julien, Strand 23, Lee and Schobel 21, Miller 19, The rest mentioned above will not be in the Twins organization in a couple years IMO. The age difference gives the last three guys time to grow in the minors. I just have the feeling that Polanco, due to age and an increasing cap amount, may be on the move in a sell high (though not at his highest) trade for pitching before the 2023 season starts. Trade one of the other guys for pitching for more than just a rental in the next two weeks and those two moves would get us better pitching and not so much of a glut for 2023.- 50 replies

Twins Appear to Trend Towards Pool Savings on Day 2
FlyingFinn replied to Jeremy Nygaard's topic in Twins Minor League Talk
Certainly enough SS/2B in the system now. Javier's days are numbered and I'm also expecting a trade from these positions, maybe Steer but also, if the Twins want a high end starter, maybe Polanco. The Twins went for the high end guys early in the draft. I think that's what most wanted here in TD. I liked it. We'll see how it ends up. -
From CBS analysis - could be a steal........... Twins pop Prielipp Prielipp might've been in the running for the No. 1 pick tonight had he not had to undergo Tommy John surgery last year. He was back to throwing bullpens late in the season, giving teams proof of life. One scout in attendance told CBS Sports that he topped out at 93 mph in rainy conditions over the course of a 50-pitch session. Clearly the Twins liked what they saw; should he live up to his old promise, he'll go down as a draft-night steal in a few years' time. R.J. Anderson

Twins Select Brooks Lee #8 Overall
FlyingFinn replied to Jeremy Nygaard's topic in Twins Minor League Talk
Already 21, not young = old -
Yes.

I'm with tarheelsfan. I will take that bet. Anyway, love the Lee pick as well.
-
And I'll give you 2 to 1 odds. Define regular............... does playing the last half of 2023 with the Twins as the starting SS (or elsewhere) count?
