    I think it is to discourage some of the more frivolous challenges. Otherwise, you would get more teams challenging plays just hoping the umpires find something. I don't like the manager challenge system in general (I'd prefer everything initiated by the replay official), but if you are going to do it, this seems like a reasonable part.

    If they were rostering guys with options, though, they wouldn't have to worry about that. For example, Moya throws 40 pitches, and the rest of the pen is taxed too? Option him for Duffey. Or a AAA starter. Then rinse and repeat. I don't think our pen is good enough or deep enough to hold a non-optionable guy in reserve all the time, and I'm also not sure Magill is good enough or has enough potential to warrant that kind of investment in him either.

    Zobrist was primarily a 2nd baseman when he signed. Murphy too, depending on how you define "big deals". And both of those guys had arguably as many, if not more, question marks as Dozier could have this offseason. I think markos's conclusion is generally correct, that it's not likely Dozier will get a $50 mil deal at this point, but it's not impossible either. 1 in 4 chance sounds about right, and I'd factor that into our deadline decision-making accordingly.

    To be fair, it wasn't that far off last year. Per B-Ref, Dodger 2B production in 2017 ranked 7th in MLB, behind the Twins but only by 1.1 wins. The gulf has widened this year, 0.8 wins at the halfway point although Dozier has only been average so far. A big part of this is Seager's injury, otherwise the Dodgers may have already had the internal resources to cut Forsythe and match Dozier's production at 2B (i.e. Taylor and Hernandez).

    Magill is out of options. I suppose he could clear waivers, but it's not so easy to shuttle him between Minnesota and Rochester. However, I don't think the criticism is about using Magill, per se. It's more like, if we're not going to use him, why do we keep him? The rest of our pen isn't good enough to support that. I think I'd rather use Magill's spot to rotate through Moya, Curtiss, Duffey, etc. Maybe even break in a AAA starter.

    I was just thinking of how this is going to screw up stats. We probably should already be filtering these "starts" out of the leaguewide IP per GS stat, somehow.

    ...and we rostered Slegers the last 4 games with no real intent/desire to use him either. Could have easily optioned/DL'd him earlier in favor of, say, Moya.

    Seems pretty clear all week that they didn't want him to start Sunday. Why wouldn't they have optioned him after his last start? Even if it turned out he was hurt, they could always rescind the option and retroactively put him on the MLB DL. We could have had Moya or another pitcher up for the last 4 games. Saturday's game definitely could have turned out differently.

    That is correct. He didn't use an option in 2015 because he was only on optional assignment for 10 days and it takes 20 to count as an option year. So 2016 and 2018 are his only option years used so far.

    Sano passed 3 years service time just before his demotion, unfortunately. Buxton is 13 days short of 3 years service time right now, so we'd have to keep him in the minors (or on the minor league DL) pretty much the rest of 2018 to get that extra year of control.

    That was actually an extension for Kinsler, signed in April 2012. So he was just coming off his age-29 season with 7.0 bWAR, although it wasn't going to take effect until his age-31 season. It was basically his peak value. Dozier probably doesn't get anything like that now -- maybe if he had signed an extension after 2016 (although he was still 2 years away from FA, unlike Kinsler's 1).

    Actually transactions for those two guys have made good sense. The ones that haven't made sense are failing to option Romero and Mejia after their last starts.

    I think this is incorrect. Players can't be recalled for 10 days after they've been optioned unless there is an injury or a doubleheader. That limits shuttling. But the players themselves don't get any extra service time credit when they are not on the roster. For example, every source I have seen on Felix Jorge shows only 2 days service time for him in 2017: https://www.baseball-reference.com/players/j/jorgefe01.shtml https://www.rosterresource.com/mlb-minnesota-twins/ Like Littell, he was up for a doubleheader, then up for a single day/appearance after that.

    This understates how odd the Cleveland ninth was. 8 shutout innings from Bauer, leading 4-0 in the 9th with closer Cody Allen taking over. Leadoff HBP on an 0-2 count to start the inning (was kind of a cheap one too, hit the knob of the bat -- it was an inside pitch but the batter was starting a swing and made no effort to avoid it either). Next batter hit it hard down the 3B line, the 3B stopped it but didn't have a play. Then a K and a fly ball, and there was 2 outs, still 4-0. Then a bloop single just over the first baseman's outstretched glove made it 4-1. Finally the first "big hit" by Cincinnati, a double to deep left center on a 2-2 count made it 4-3 with a runner on second, still 2 outs. Then came the questionable Cleveland decisions. Really dumb intentional walk -- Schebler isn't that good of a hitter, and the next batter (Dilson Herrera), while a pretty marginal MLB reserve, he hit for a similar average in the minors and has a similar career MLB K rate as Schebler too. And after Herrera, Votto was on deck. In any case, after the intentional walk to Schebler, Allen unintentionally walked Herrera to load the bases to bring Votto up. That's when the pitcher mix-up occurred, and it was kind of a bad one. Perez has been a lights-out lefty specialist for them this year -- Otero, a battered RH reliever. I guess Votto was 0-for-4 career against Otero, but still. (He's 4-for-13 with 6 K's versus Perez, but only 0-2 since Perez became a full-time reliever in 2012.) Anyway, Votto's double on a 3-2 count to deep right-center scored 3 runs and effectively ended the game.

    We have an option on 2019 for Morrison. It could vest at 600 PA, but he's only on pace for 537 right now, so that is doubtful.

    Barring anything unusual, Ervin could probably clear waivers in early August, so the more appropriate trade deadline for him could be August 31st.

    Thanks for the update. In any case, Jorge will be eligible for minor league free agency this winter unless we add him back to the 40-man roster. But it sounds like there isn't much of a market for him anyway. I suppose he could find a club with fewer AAA SP prospects -- hard to see any path back to MLB for him in this organization right now.

    I think the implication is that we'd agree on the framework of a deal with Miami and get permission to talk extension. Like the Mets and Johan Santana.
