  1. Watching the O's A's: was wondering about Tim Beckham and discovered he was #1 overall 2008. Rays gave him away much like the Twins gave away Hicks....tie-in, it was also the year the Twins drafted Hicks! So, looking at 1st round 2008 the standout is Posey, 8th overall by SF and 3 WS championships later. However, sorted by WAR, I found these results: 1. Posey 37 2. Lawrie 15 3. Lynn 14 4. Hosmer 13 5. Forsythe 12 6. Cole 11.7 7. Jason Castro 11.6 8. Chisenhall 9 ... 15. Hicks 5 We got the catcher we needed, just not in the trade. Here's to Castro, better than Beckham(who started the thread) at 5 WAR, Smoak, Cashner, Alonso, Crow, etc. He ain't chopped liver. BTW, Castro was 10th overall that year by Houston, and Hicks was 14th.
  2. The magic isn't in the method, but the results. Wild card in August as opposed to on the way to 100 losses. Maybe the current regime has better data on our scrap heap finds than TR ever had, or knew what to do with. Just a guess.
  3. What is the process for deciding who wins a gold glove? Is it journalists who vote, players, or something else?
  4. Terrific, using my metrics of "never heard of this third rounder," and "hey, nice numbers as a young player for his league."
  5. As a fan of small sample sizes, I am really digging Lewis's .400 batting average at Cedar Rapids. Although he has dropped .400 points in the last week....
  6. Pitching Geometry 101, by Bert Blyleven: "Planes and angles baby."
  7. Berrios showing how to pitch with a 5 run lead. Throw strikes, engage your above average defense, allow fans to be entertained, and still have the panache to whiff a guy like Lamb with 96 mph heat. This team....
  8. Buxton has tripled his number of triples the last couple games.
  9. Well, Buck is up to .240. What he is doing sure looks sustainable to me. This is gonna be fun.
  10. I guess this means Gonsalves has definitively left Stewart in his dust.
  11. Wow, watching the Padres polish off the Phillies, and San Diego put in a sub in left field that out Hrbeks Hrbek: Matt Szczur. If you allow names in hangman, that wins every time. They pronounced it like Caesar. Wonder if that's a name that got mangled at Ellis Island.
  12. The other high school SS they drafted is also doing pretty well for a 17 getting his first taste of pro ball, Ricky De La Torre, playing all over the infield and hitting .261.
  13. As a Minnesotan, I like the cool, calm demeanor of Molitor. Makes him seem more cerebral than he is, when I listen to him talk. I want a players' guy. Maybe that's Dougie M. I don't like Molitor's short leash for young players, although it has turned a rebuild season not a contention season. Hell, what do I know.... Pretty hard to let him go if this season continues to trend positively.
  14. I'll take one tool at a time with Buxton - the field throw run are already top notch. Get the hit tool going, and the power will come with time.
  15. 2017's draft class will help - not seeing many duds in the premium section of the draft.
  16. That new stance with little leg-kick has been working a treat. Reminds me of Span. His plate control has gone up by leaps and bounds.
  17. Tough call - his intangibles are probably off the charts. Just wait until either Rochester is done, or September. Garver will get his due. Very good prospect.
  18. With pitches in the 70s and 80s. Craaazy.
  19. Us as well - helps ease the crud of last night.
  20. Get Perkins on a plane and have him pitch the 9th.
  21. Torii cracks me up - he is so unprofessional, total homer, so un-Lapanta. To me, that's refreshing. I think his commentary holds insight as well.
  22. Donny Bremer.... Where's Deduno Abides when we need him
  23. Byron Buxton's batting average over the last 10 games: .343
