  1. I'm guessing Cuddy moves to 1B to take over there when Helton is done.
  2. We do need pitching, a whole lot of pitching, but we have also stunk at developing our own MIs.
  3. It won't be the right time to try and nab a quality FA starter or two. It would be a waste of oh so limited funds. :-)
  4. Thanks for the info. I see it's not something we're very keen on doing and I guess when we were a small market team with limited funding not going that route made a lot of sense, though no one strategy works 100% of the time in all situations when acquiring talent.
  5. Serious question because I seriously can't remember. When was the last time we traded a prospect/prospects for an established very good player? In this instance, I mean prospects that hadn't made the show at all yet. Anyone remember when that was?
  6. It's the worst rotation in baseball and, if it stays the course, we might be saying it's the worst MLB rotation in baseball this millenium considering all aspects of what you expect from a rotation (and, as a bonus, considering our park and division.)
  7. 'Ryan’s moves doomed the 2013 Twins to another season of failure. His unwillingness to spend big money on free-agent pitchers fits with his philosophy of avoiding the kind of huge contracts that have embarrassed or hamstrung other franchises.' Souhan: Twins' lack of pitching is on Ryan, not Gardenhire | StarTribune.com On top of that, on ESPN1500 in the last day or two, apparently he came right out and said 2013 wasn't the year to spend and yet he told the season ticket holders and potential season tickets holder he'd do everything possible to truly improve the rotation. So, if he never planned to even try to improve this year's rotation, why tell them he's going to? I know, besides the fact that everyone lies so it's somehow okay. The people buying season tickets should be comforted by those kind of statement.
  8. Coomer is always too busy trying to push the Twins way. Like how he got on an opposing player for not running all out on a play. He ragged on him a bit, saying plays like that was why the team wasn't winning that much, only to find out the player had a sore hammy coming into the game. A little more research, pre-game prep, he would have known that....but he was so eager to push his agenda about the Twins way.
  9. The bright side of TK being in the booth. He doesn't really make random stuff up and try and push them off as facts like the main two or other fill-ins do. So that's a good thing I guess.
  10. Ryan gave Castillo away for nothing to save like 1M. I'd be surprised if he ate 6M to trade Morny.
  11. I don't either...that's why I've never said anything like that.
  12. That and whomever replaces him there.
  13. And I agree. Payroll obligations are low compared to what is available, and going to drop more after 2013 and after 2014. Our new guys that have just come up now aren't going to even be arbitration eligible till the offseason before 2017 season, and we're going to keep bringing in guys that aren't going to be arbitration eligible until after that. As a fan who wants their team to be better (I hope that's what everyone wants),if the spending isn't going to hurt us, at all, in any way, how can not spending be defended? The money is just going into the owners' pockets without even trying to improve the team. It's not going to be saved to use later. There is no negative to the Twins spending, even if the moves don't work. There's going to be much so much money available and there was very likely enough to start rolling this year. How does it help the fan for the Twins not to spend all that available money that won't hinder us in any way, in the present or future, if the contract don't work out? Boggles my mind, frankly.
  14. Baseball players are part of a 25 man roster with players being rotated in and out on it. They all need to do their jobs to win. It's not like basketball where a guy like Jordan, Kobe and Lebron can really just take over a game. Can't just say, well this baseball player can't be too valuable or we'd be winning. He could be having a great season, we'd still be losing. In part, because, well, he can't pitch.
  15. I'm sure you probably know this, but Delmon signed a major league contract when he was drafted. He had to be on the 40 man roster right away and only had three option years from the git-go.
  16. The flip side to that is that in football you have the anticipation to see your team play all week, and if you miss one, you only have 15 more games to see that season. You could miss 16 Twins games in a season, and it wouldn't phase you. There's still 146 more. That each team only plays 16 games gives the illusion that every single game matters more in football than any one game in the sports who play way more games in the season. There's always time to go on a run to cover those couple losses. Harder to do in football. Now, for me, we played games 163 in consecutive seasons, and I've always said games in April are just as important as games in September. Too many people don't see it that way. Then there's the expression, ' No matter how good you are, you're going to lose one-third of your games. No matter how bad you are you're going to win one-third of your games. It's the other third that makes the difference.' Who chooses which 1/3 are the key games? :-)
  17. Was Howard Sinker's last article get discussed in here yet? If not, here it is: A Fan's View | StarTribune.com
  18. Yeah, but as I understand it, a year's payroll is based on projected revenue for the season. So this year's payroll is based on what they projected to get in revenue this year. The season is only a bit over halfway completed. Their revenue last year, according to Forbes, was 214M I believe. I just took it down some. I doubt they projected under 200M or over what they made last year. Also, if I was the one who brought up they could be fibbing about the numbers to the public, I'd be flogged in here. :-)
  19. If the mark is 200M dollars in revenue to make a 100M, and we're already at 18M below, and we've got quite a bit coming off the books this year. That's a lot. Then add the 25M too. Not sure if owners will pocket half that and only put 50% up for payroll or not, but any way you look at it, there should be a boatload of money available since about 25M come off the books replaced by pre-arbitraton players. 25M (off the books)+18M (not spent this year)+25 or 12.5M (TV contract money for each team. That's a lot of money.
  20. Because you expect the players to come out and say, 'I want to play where I'll get paid the most!'? That would go over extremely well. This is their job, the way they make a living. In any event, that wasn't the point. There's ALWAYS a reason to excuse the non-spending was the point. And that's fine, I guess. If getting quality players in all ways possible isn't something you care about the team doing, then it's certainly your prerogative. Defend away, but don't expect everyone to agree with that strategy.
  21. anyone else think a more appropriate double-bobblehead figure would have been Gardy and Punto? :-)
  22. I liked the Span and Revere trades. I thought those moves we necessary. I also liked the commitment to Hicks. Ryan has his moments and he wouldn't be a GM if he didn't. I criticize him or praise him dependent on each individual situation. I'm not sure he'll ever be the guy to make the one or two big moves to put us over the top though, even when that year comes when we're going to truly be competitive again.
  23. I like this article. It's about tradeline deals, but some of it...like some of the stuff the players said, I believe apply in all situations. Here's one quote: 'Go ask any player about what those deals do for a clubhouse. They have the ability to inspire and energize. They're a message from management that they believe in the players they've got on hand and are going to do everything possible to help them win. The future is now.' Richard Justice: Trade Deadline hindsight is always 20/20 | MLB.com: News
  24. I'm not sure you need to know what TR is thinking in order to have a number you think is enough monetary flexibility to pursue quality free agents. Scenarios may differ, and like you said that horse has been whooped, but if having 20M available isn't enough to take a chance on signing quality FA, is 40M? 50M? I think some people who have no issues with spending this year have a number where they say something like, 'oh come on. I understand you don't want to just throw money away, TR, but come on, man! That's a lot of dough just sitting there not helping the team at all.' As far as the second part goes, until I see otherwise, I can't be optimistic he'll take a dive into the deep-end as much as I'd like to believe he will. I want to be that guy, but I just can't. I don't see him ever 'overspending' on years and dollars to get a top notch player. There's no mystical top notch players who is going to drop into his lap over other teams outbidding him and I don't think he'll stretch too far to outbid others for top quality players even when he can. Would I love to eat some crow on that? Heck ya!
  25. I appreciate the link. In this case, though, I wonder if anyone ever really thought he wouldn't be back if he wanted to be back. This can be considered positive by some fans.
