  1. This is a specific question to him about how much monetary flexibility the team needs to have have for him to be truly bothered we didn't sign a truly good pitcher, which was his argument. The overall argument isn't going away, but this my post was asking what his specific ballpark number was.
  2. I misunderstood. After reading 'For me as long as they spend money on legitimate ML pitching this offseason I am okay with not going after the Cubans.', I thought you meant all options, to include normal FA and international markets. I apologize for misunderstanding.
  3. He had financial flexibility this year, didn't he? How much flexibility is enough before we say, okay NOW, he better do something. Seriously, I'm honestly not trying to be snarky with you (so please don't take it that way) and you're certainly not the only one saying things like this, but how much flexibility does he need to have, specifically, for you to be up in arms over a lack of real quality talent acquired in FA?
  4. Makes sense, but hasn't Hicks started coming out of it? .707 OPS in May, .708 in June, and .848 so far in July. I guess I've always been more optimistic about Hicks than Gibson.
  5. Last year the argument was lose 90 games for a second straight year. After 2010, the reason we didn't go get quality FA was because we didn't need them. There will always, and I mean always, be a way to excuse the team when they don't go and get top quality players in FA. Either we did well and don't need them, so it's totally understandable we didn't go and improve our team, or it's okay we didn't get any quality FAs cause no one wants to come here because apparently, even after winning for over a decade very recently, we've lost two straight seasons so we're 'team non grata' (a play off of the expression persona non grata).
  6. Thanks for the clarification. And I agree with you.
  7. Pat Reusse was a lot more liked when he was writing puff pieces about the Twins. Then he was apparently credible. Somehow his credibility seems to have vanished as he starts to be critical of the team in more than just a glancing way.
  8. Ah, see I was just thinking about the actual performance of each of the two players instead of focusing on the overall effect. Oops. Certainly another thing to consider. Good call!
  9. Do you think Gibson has a legitimate chance to help us more this year than Hicks? If so, may I ask why? Don't necessarily agree, but curious as to your reasons if you do
  10. Of the top 30, Twins have so far signed one of them. The #10 guy. If the Cubs get Tseng, the will have gotten four of the top 30 (so far). 1, 3, 17 and 29.
  11. It's the kind of move some of us can only dream of.
  12. That was always a possibility too. After he didn't get it done earlier with Hunter and Santana in the offseason prior to 2007, and then those two flipping out over the Castillo trade, maybe he felt the best chance for one or both of them to stay was to excuse himself. All speculation of course.
  13. I guess I'll try to do that. I'll probably be called out for being rude to someone addressing a post to me, but I'll try it. I'd venture to say simply asking me what I meant by okay the first time I responded to you that way, or even the second time, instead of assuming what I meant, might have been a better way to handle this. Might have avoided you blowing up at me in front of everyone on the forum, because you misunderstood why I wrote okay in the first place. Now, that's not meant at snark or anything, just saying that politeness goes both ways and so does posters being given the benefit of the doubt, as we've been told to do when dealing with each other.
  14. I'm not sure how your first sentence isn't contradicted by your second sentence. You say everyone is low risk/high reward then say there are high risk/high reward players. Can you clear up my misunderstanding, please?
  15. When taking Mike's quote, I should have cut the 2nd part. My response was solely meant to be about what he originally said, not his edit part. That's not to say that his second part isn't debatable, but it's not clear that's what happened since I can't read his TR's intent and it's reasonable to believe there were many other things that prompted him. Burnout being one of them. Wanting to get back to what he loves, scouting, is another
  16. Yes it is, but that's not going to stop people from arguing otherwise. And you know this.
  17. It's not condescending. You are assuming what I'm thinking once again. Once I feel the debate is at a stand still, and you and I clearly are on this and many topics, instead of continuing to try and prove my point, I just move on from the debate. That's what we're told to do, not continue on and on with a poster trying to prove a point. I suppose I should, in the future, just say agree to disagree. Either way, at this point, I feel I can't win with you no matter what I do.
  18. It's an interesting way to do things. If he doesn't pay a lot and choose quantity over quality, and a guy work outs well, then he gets the genius label. If none of them work out, well, there were no expectations for them to do so anyway, so no biggy. We live and die by low risk/possible high reward transactions. Not saying that's not a good way to do things, but if that's the way you do almost everything, I think that's a problem.
  19. You defintely should be, yes. I believe Buxton was last year too.
  20. They were young and had already performed well in their young careers. Not unreasonable to go into this season and believe that doesn't continue for most of them as they start into their prime. And it was the right move. Sometimes the right move doesn't work. Sometimes the wrong move does. Some say trading Span was the right move to get Meyer. If Meyer busts, will those same people turn around and say it was the wrong move? I bet a bunch will. I won't, cause at the time it was the right move. Moore took a shot, and we don;'t even know for sure yet if it ends up poorly for KC anyway. We don't know for sure Myer will be a stud. We don't know KC's position players don't turn it around this year or next. If it doesn't work out, we don't know if KC turns around and trades Shields for more talent this offseason and the trade still ends up good for them. He's still a trade chip and this year hasn't hurt his value.
  21. Honestly, I would have been surprised if Stewart wasn't ranked around where he was. I think he's going to be a top notch pitcher, I really do.
  22. I think Hicks and Arcia both will be. Maybe not this year, though possibly this year for Hicks in the 2nd half, but I expect those two to be real contributors for years. I'm with your overall premise though.
  23. First, it's not just Cubans. The international market extends farther out than that. Second, what makes you think Ryan will pay what is necessary to give a quality above average FA MLB caliber pitcher a 3-4 year deal, or that he'll 'overpay' for any true quality FA player, much less a pitcher? That's not at all meant as snark, that's a real question. People keep backing up expectations for TR to do stuff. next year people will be saying, 'well if he doesn't do it next year I'll have a problem', and so on and so on.
  24. Based on pretty reasonable expectations, KC has Butler, Hosmer, Moustakas, Cain, Perez, Escobar all under-performing. Even Gordon somewhat. That's 7 young pieces to build around and all underperforming. I doubt anyone could see that coming. It's unfortunate, but going for it was the right move. If Myers becomes a superstar, that's good, but you don't get a guy like Shields, an established ace, for nothing.
