  1. I criticize his moves (or lack of moves, or tactic) and back other moves (like the Span and Revere trades). Plenty of people in here do the same exact thing. Very, very few who constantly defend Ryan actually criticize him on occasion.
  2. At some point, some of us are going to have to realize that no matter what Ryan says or does (or doesn't do), there's going to be people who will always defend him in here. Always. Some even go so far as to point to positive things he says as proof he's going to do something, while also telling us not to take his words so serious when it's something negative or unflattering. Then some go even farther to say when he outright says he'll do things he has no intention of doing, it was okay he said he would (like do everything he could to greatly improve the rotation this year) At what point do one just stop trying to convince that have no intention of opening up to the possibility that sometimes he deserves to be criticized? Of course, that would cut about half the debates around here.
  3. It's not like Pelfrey had a lot of injury history prior to last year. Over 200 IP in each of the previous 4 seasons prior to 2012. He's pitched a little over 6 IP since the calender turned to June and he has 5 QS in his last 7 games. He's definitely getting better. I don't think we need to assume just because he missed most of 2012, means he'll necessarily just continue to be a injury risk.
  4. This just gives people who constantly look for a reason to bash Mauer another thing to complain. So I guess we should be happy for those people. Yeah, I know, like this complaint, most of the rest of it didn't make any sense either, but when does it have to? He makes 23M a year. :-)
  5. It was a great deal, and there wasn't too much pressure since he had Mauer to replace AJ anyway, so even better. It was also a long time ago.
  6. Nathan was converted to reliever the year before we got him and he excelled in that role. I have no doubt he would have taken over for Worrell if he had stayed in San Fran but they weren't going to hand him the closer reigns his first year as a reliever before they saw what he could do.
  7. I like what Denis Leary and Letterman said about Steroid Use in sports... Leary: "But you know here's the thing. I'm sick of the thing in baseball, too, for steroids. We have the drugs, let's just give 'em all the drugs and let them get as big as they wanna get. I'd like to have huge, giantmongous athletes ... biggest people ever, you know. So what if you can throw a shot put 25 yards. I wanna see you throw an actual Olympic official from Athens to downtown Paris. That's what I want." Letterman: "A thousand home runs a season is what I'm looking for." Leary: "Yeah, imagine Babe Ruth on steroids, man. We're talking 150 home runs a week. You know? Not to mention the hookers." Letterman: "Hey, don't mention the hookers." Cracked me up...
  8. Only becomes a wash if everyone uses it...and it still has the ability to help the individual team get better if it's spent. I'm not expecting Ryan to sign any quality free agents this offseason...I mean why not wait until we're 'competitive'? ;-)
  9. So all that wiggle room AND an additional 25M coming in from the TV contract deal.
  10. I agree. I said almost the the same thing in response to a post homieramone posted earlier today when he was dogging out the Cubs approach. Seems there clearly seems to be two avenues that Ryan is unable to follow to improve the team. One, trading prospects for proven players and two, getting quality free agents. So far, he's lacking on the international front overall as well, but that's not over yet so maybe there's a rabbit out there he's going to pull out. Cubs are not going to leave any stone unturned, Epstein never has before, and for that alone, they deserve credit, IMO.
  11. And everyone thought the Willingham signing over Cuddyer was a great move, then a year later, it's really not looking that way at all. In this case, it hasn't even been a whole season and we're determining who made the better signing between these two.
  12. When looking at how he's pitched so far for the season, if one actually believe Pelfrey hasn't pitched that bad, then we need to re-examine what the phrase 'not that bad' means. He's improving and I've said just recently that I expect him to be better than Correia for the remainder of the year, but he has pitched poorly considering the whole season and his performance is a factor in why we are as bad as we are. There are 90 pitchers who have pitched enough to qualify for stats. He's had enough starts to qualify, but hasn't quite given the Twins enough innings to qualify, which is one shot against the idea he hasn't been that bad. The second would be that if he had a couple more innings, he'd rank 86th out of 91 pitchers in ERA. The third would be that his WHIP is over 1.500. I think many people wondered how he'd do going from the NL to the AL and wondered how he'd do after surgery. And while he's been doing well recently, I think many wondered why Ryan thought it was a good idea to sign a guy to let him rehab on a team clearly in need of pitching...especially considering Worley and Harden were also coming off injury and that the other piece was Correia.
  13. And when do you suppose we'll be dominating? I think it's good to remember that the Red Sox hadn't won a W Series in forever, the whole curse of the Bambino, and then Theo Epstein showed up and they won two in the first six or seven years having him as GM and Hoyer as assistant to the GM and then actually assistant GM. I think the point is, the Cubs are doing everything they can to acquire talent from all avenues possible. Getting FAs that can be traded later for more young talent, aggressively utilizing the international draft, and so on. I wouldn't bet against them being truly competitive much sooner than 2020s.
  14. Nope, actually, I loved the trade...but we should be allowed to be disappointed that a guy we seriously counted on to help the rotation this year (opening day starter) is yet another guy who was coming off injury from last year and isn't working out so far. I, personally, can't see how it's acceptable that two of the three (or three of the four if one believes in the Harden fantasy) people we brought in to truly improve our rotation were people we had to seriously hope would be fully recovered from injury and effectively ready to go. At some point, we have to ask did he improve the team this year? Downgraded the offense, and brought in injury question marks for the pitching (and it's not like any of the these guys were that great when they were healthy and in the NL)
  15. Pelfrey is a Ryan success because he's done pretty well the last month or so. Correia is a Ryan success because, despite having an ERA around 5 since the beginning of May, his April makes it so he's league average so far. See how we can move things around and use different times frames to make each player look like a success for Ryan if we really try? Heck, some apparently think we aren't even allowed to be disappointed about Worley because, well, he's not getting paid that much.
  16. Raise your hand if you ever, EVER, actually thought Harden would get in the MLB rotation this year? Bueller...Bueller...Bueller.....?
  17. Hardly worth complaining about indeed, unless you care more about the nature of the rotation than whether or not he was worth what he's getting paid. This guy was our opening day starter, one of the three people brought in to be in our rotation this year...and he's in the minors. Whether a guy is worth what he's getting or not is important to the bean counters, as a fan I care more about the overall product on the field.
  18. I agree. I was stationed in Germany '04-'06. My wife was back in the states. We had a due date for the birth of my daughter, and I got permissive TDY to go there for 10 days. 3 days is nothing.
  19. To be honest, I don't know how anyone can pick and choose what to believe and what not to believe when it comes to things Ryan says.
  20. The season is nowhere near over. 5M a year for two years for a FA pitcher...with what pitchers past arbitration get these days, doesn't take much for a FA pitcher to be worth that money. Right now, he's right at league average even with the great April. Everyone seems so eager to jump on the Correia was a good signing boat when he had the good month and hasn't been that good, at all, since. And really who cares if he was worth that small salary, we needed to greatly improve.
  21. I don't know, but Rhett Bollinger put that in his article today about Mauer being out, so maybe Gardy saw something and made a comment, only later to find out Arcia was experiencing dizziness.
  22. I posted this earlier on this thread: 'Catcher Drew Butera was called up from Triple-A Rochester to take Mauer's place on the roster. Outfielder Oswaldo Arcia, who was also a possibility to replace Mauer, left Tuesday's game with Rochester in the third inning, but it was because he felt dizziness.'
  23. being able to and being willing to are two different things. :-)
  24. And how would the money being spent hurt us? That's the part. Yeah, they may be declining, but is the money that we'd be spending stop us from spending? No. We are 20M below the likely 50% of this year's revenue right now and over 30M will be coming off the books in the next 2 years. Then you get 25M in the TV contract money. You saying one 16M a year contract for 5 year would hurt us? How? Who are we spending big money on in 2017, do you figure? We have so much financial flexibility in the forseeable future, it's ridiculous to think a 5 year contract for double digit money would straddle us. Not only that, but not all long contract end up bad. Twins didn't want to sign Hunter to a long term contract, worried about the same thing, and he's outplayed that one and has a new one to boot. You've listed bad contract and failed to mention how it straddles us. because Ryan is going to go ape sheet in FA some time in the future and the remaining 40M or so just won't be enough? Any long term contract can come back and not work out, doesn't mean you don't try once in awhile...especially when it won't stop you from being able to put a competitive team on the field if it doesn't quite work out
  25. With all the money coming off the books in the next couple years, those players replaced by prospects, and no raises due to any player (s) that would cost a lot, I wonder how signing someone would straddle our team, anyway.
