  1. Yeah, I pointed out the record before 2011 happened because The Hardball Times and Baseball America ranking came out....before the 2011 season. You mentioned 2011 and emphasized farm system rankings, so was I supposed to use 2012 prospect ranking when you pointed out 2011?
  2. What was the budget when we got Sano? Was there a cap like there is now? In any event, if Ryan won't even spend what the Pohalds made available for payroll now, it's hard to believe he would have done what was needed to get Sano. No one knows for sure, but it seems unlikely.
  3. Well, we had just won 94 games when the Hardball Times and Baseball America rankings came out before the 2011 season. Reigning division winner and high ranking farm system before the 2011 season, or worst record in baseball last year and #1 farm system now. Which is better? And you emphasized the farm system rankings in your post when talking about shambles...because that's all you brought up when talking about it being better.
  4. IMO, it was the right move for Moore this year based on the young talent they have on that team with some MLB experience under their belts and expectations that talent would trend up. We are nowhere near where KC was going into this year in that regard. In that link I gave, it explains why he did what he did...and I agree.
  5. Correia hasn't finished a season with a league average ERA or better since he became a starter. Closest he came was 2009 pitching half his games in Petco.
  6. Hardball Times had the Twins at 6th in farm system in Feb 2011. Baseball America had us at 11th in Mar 12. Extend that out, Fangraphs in Mar of 2012 (right after Ryan took back over but before he drafted or did anything to improve the farm system) had us at 15. John Sickles had us at 17 around the same time frame as Fangraphs had us at 15. shambles might be an exaggeration
  7. Spending a total amount for a group of players isn't the same as spending a lot on one. I agree we don't know if Ryan would have or not, but using the fact he spent over 3M last year doesn't prove anything on what he would spend for one high priced guy.
  8. Doumit and Willingham pretty much had career years last year. To assume either would repeat last year, or even one, was pretty unrealistic. These aren't young 20 year olds going into their prime.
  9. It was my understanding, and it could be wrong, is that the team felt it was loaded with OF talent at the time so they moved him to 2B.
  10. So, because he had one bad game, you'd rate his defense poor. He's looked to me to be above average on defense for the season. Fangraphs seems to agree.
  11. Why are we calling Shields just 'solid'? Two season prior to this year he averaged over 230 innings, an ERA around 3.20, a WHIP of about 1.100, 14 complete games with 6 that were shutouts...in the AL East. Here's a good a article about the Royals. It talks about Shields' influence/affect on the players and why Moore made the trade. http://mlb.mlb.com/news/article.jsp?ymd=20130805&content_id=56018042&vkey=news_kc&c_id=kc
  12. Doubt it. If the April whisperer continues his trend, he'll have people thinking he's rebounded and is still a good signing till around August next when people will finally let reality set in...
  13. Well, they won't trade prospects, and they won't pay for quality free agent pitching, and we have nothing left to really trade that will garnish any quality starting pitching, especially since Perkins is unavailable... So, um, it's the draft
  14. Probably be better to follow the Cardinals model rather than the Rays and As. Not that there's anything wrong with the way the Rays and As do things, but they are seriously small market. No reason, at all, to have to work our model around having a 50M payroll.
  15. Well, first, it wasn't his best start of the year...that was against Boston, in Boston and DOUMIT was his catcher. His 2nd best start, against Seattle...again with Doumit. Are we going to argue DOUMIT is a better catcher than Mauer and Butera?
  16. Was there something in my post bashing what was done in the past? That's over and done with. All I'm talking about now is, going forward, utilizing all avenues available to create a team. Some people seem to want to completely rule out getting true quality players in FA.
  17. actually, I'm pretty sure I'm just talking about plans of action moving forward and nothing at all to do with what they did or didn't do. BTW, you wrote: 'I don't think anyone is against signing free agents that produce close to their contracts.' BIG problem with that statement...You'd need to have a crystal ball to know if a FA you sign will produce close to their contract. So yeah...again...can't be scared to dive in just cause you think you might end up spending a bit more than what they end up being worth
  18. One season doesn't prove anything...whether it be a good one season or a bad one season.
  19. Again, nobody is arguing that it isn't the BEST way, the argument is that all ways need to be utilized. You can't throw out an avenue to improve because you're scared it may not work out. It's the cost of doing business...some just don't work out. And no one is suggesting throwing 100M contract at multiple free agents...I'm sure not.
  20. should be back Friday
  21. You talking about Hicks, Arcia or Gibson with that statement? :-)
  22. I was just adding to the info you provided...backing up the point you were making rather than making a point myself :-)
  23. 46% (tops in AL), league average 26%...
  24. You point out the ones that don't work out and ignore the ones that do work out... And I never said sign guys to long contracts just because you can afford to...so that counter makes no sense. And you say the next 4-5 years, during which time more payroll comes off the books being replaced by pre-arbitration guys? 27M off the books going into next season, 10M or so after 2014. How low does payroll have to be before you say, Hmm, maybe signing a true quality player or two to a long term contract won't 'hamstring' us? Do we have to get to 30M a season?
  25. This whole idea about how big contracts now will adversely affect our ability to keep out supposed future studs is comical. These mega contracts that some just assume our prospects coming up are going to be deserving of won't be needed till so far down the road it's a non-factor in spending now...so we need to stop saying we need to not give out longer contracts for that reason...especially with where our payroll sits now and where it will sit after next year and the year after when lots of money coming off the books. I mean, seriously, most of the guys we're projecting to deserve big contracts won't even be 1st year arbitration eligible till 2017 at the very earliest, many farther down the road than that. This is 2013. Not only that, Mauer's contract ends 2018 as well.
