  1. I already was rooting for them to make the playoffs, but yeah..even more now.
  2. When he said that, that was to answer the question 'what would it take to get Stanton AND Jose Fernandez'...not just Stanton. To me, with the exception of Buxton, we open up our cupboard and say, 'take any four prospects you want' and we'll take Fernandez and Stanton.
  3. Fernandez doesn't...I'm talking about Fernandez.
  4. Last year we ranked 18th in defensive efficiency according to Baseball Prospectus. This year we are 29th.
  5. For Fernandez, I'd give up Sano and any pitching prospect we had that could be traded. I doubt Miami makes him available until he's arbitration eligible. It's a fun would you or wouldn't you exercise, but it wouldn't happen for two reasons. Ryan wouldn't ever try it and Miami likely won't even consider it for another couple seasons.
  6. Trade prospects to get a great player? No way would Ryan do that. Yes, due to our farm system, we would be be in great position to get Stanton. That's what the writer says. He doesn't say he believes there's any chance we would do it.
  7. Yup...a by-prodcut of seeing a lot of runners on base and making contact so much.
  8. It wasn't a close game, it was a butt-kickin. And as was pointed out earlier, the rarity of the accomplishment can't be ignored. More than 4 times as likely to throw a no-hitter than to pitch a CGSO in your debut appearance.
  9. Yeah, the farm system was ranked pretty high in 2011...so give Smith credit for improving a poor farm system himself because the farm system was not good when he took over and very good when Ryan took back over. Ryan improved it by being being the GM during two drafts in which his scouting director was able to draft very high. He helped it by the May and Meyer trade. I doubt Ryan ever spends what was needed to get Sano.
  10. I used 162 game average. Can find that at Baseball-Reference. Even 22.7 is such a small percentage it isn't even worth mentioning. It's one of the most worthless stats in baseball. Players who make a lot of contact GiDP some times. The triple crown having AL MVP last year led the MAJORS in GiDP last year with 28, two more than anyone else. The year before the top 5 in the majors was Pujols, AGone, Miguel Cabrera, Hunter and Ortiz.
  11. You also can't ignore the info I provided, which I believe tells the story in a lot more detail and which you did not address. Did you put any thought into all that info? You also can't draw too many conclusions on 74 AB. His BA w/RISP was over .300 not too long ago.
  12. or even worse, 73, 97, 68, 78, 89...
  13. Mauer bats a little at #3, but mostly at #2 this year. The Twins #1 batters this year have an OBP of .267. That's DEAD LAST in MLB. The next lowest is .281. Our #9 hitters have an OBP of .264. He's had 94 plate appearances with RISP. Who is he supposed to be knocking in? Compare that to Trout who is the Angels #2 batter most of the time and the #1 hitter a little bit. He has 136 plate appearances with RISP. Mauer is 11th in the AL for runs created (cumulative stat) and 5th in the AL in runs created per 27 outs (an average stat, like batting average). He's creating runs just fine, but he's also batting in the 2 spot with little help in front of him or behind him. MAYBE he's pressing too much with RISP due to the #3 spot's inability to drive in runs themselves this year? I mean our #3 hitter is 20th in RBI this year and that's with Mauer on base 40% of the time...
  14. My point is...take defensive metrics for example...most fans of a team watch their team way more than any other team. Some, that's all they watch. So most, if not all, of their views of another team's player's abilities comes from the few games against their team and highlights on XYZ station. Do we really have a feel for how well our CF plays compared to the each other CF in the majors? We've watched our guy 150 or so times, other CFs maybe 18, 20 times at most (probably a lot less)? The people who make the defensive metrics watch every game. They compare players for a living. And as far as WAR goes, your post makes it seem like you feel it's a carpy stat. Fine. don't use the stat. I'm not arguing FOR the team WAR stat...heck I've never mentioned it in a conversation till now. I'm saying it, like all other stats, is either reliable or it's not. It's not a matter of it being reliable during the times a fan's eyes say it's correct and not reliable other times because that same fan's eyes disagree. If I like the UZR stat, and I think my guy is a very good defender, but I find out his UZR is in the negative, I'm not going to say, 'well, it's good most of the time, but obviously not in this instance'. Why would I say that? Was his UZR calculated differently than everyone else's? No
  15. My point was, I either trust a stat, or don't trust a stat. I don't trust it only when it tells me the same thing my eyes tell me. I wouldn't use it in an argument to back up what I'm saying and then later disregard it when that stat is brought up in a debate and it doesn't back my opinion. As far as WAR goes, I don't think it was ever meant to tell a story as a team stat...but that's just my opinion.
  16. And by 'usual 20 double plays a season' you mean the three seasons he's had 20 or more. His 162 game average for GiDP is 19...his 162 game average for plate appearances is 696. So that's, what, less than 3% of his PAs?
  17. It's a slippery slope when we only agree with metrics if they pass our eye tests (especailly when everyone's eye tests are different), while giving them less value, or none at all, if they don't. That goes for all metrics. Defensive metrics are done by people who watch way, way, way more games and games of all teams in order to get them. Groups of people doing it as their job to give people the best information available to decide who is good at what and who isn't.
  18. Exactly. The OPs post said, 'Now the question, was it right to not let him finish or was Gardy right to protect his arm?'. Once a person reads that, they had to know some would agree with Gardy's call and some wouldn't. If you didn't want to see the posts not agreeing with Gardy's decision, why keep reading? Is it so you can complain about the complaining (which of course is okay to do and not the LEAST BIT hypocritical). By complaining about people disagreeing with the call (being negative) you're basically saying, don't answer the OPs question. Maybe it's a reading comprehension issue, maybe people were too lazy to read the OP and didn't know what he was asking, or maybe it's the never-ending quest by some posters to have every post be a cheerleading, ignore the problems, 'positive', glass is always half full kind of place to chat. However it is, if people can't talk about EXACTLY the point of a thread in the thread, then what's the point? Why not just delete the thread entirely and all threads that will lead to someone daring to questions the decisions of Gardy, Ryan and the rest? Anyone else find it funny that no player is off limits to discuss their good points and bad point, but Gardy and Ryan, for some, are off limits less you be deemed 'negative'?
  19. Gaetti was gone...and they had one guy who played in 121 games at 3B...so I suppose there may have been a platoon, but Gaetti wasn't part of it. So I guess I just consider that a new 3B. I also remember Davis, Morris and Knoblauch coming on board. To be honest, it was my first year back in Panama, I got some baseball games, but not any Twins game until playoffs. So it was a bummer not being able to see the season.
  20. Besides the 2B, 3B, DH a starting pitcher or two, and a good chunk of the bullpen.
  21. I've notice a drop off in the mental mistakes...the fundamentals mistakes....the not knowing what to do with the ball if hit here and opposed to there, or what have you. Physical errors happen
  22. The Royals? When did they try to buy their way out of terribleness? I know the Mets have in the past, but they aren't now and I don't know when the Royals did. I agree with the premise of your post for the most part, not all, but most. Can you give some example years for the Royals? You talking this year when they finally aren't bottom feeding with their payroll? I mean I know they are above the Twins, but that's hardly an accomplishment...and they are in the playoff hunt...so they aren't exactly terrible.
  23. Did you read the OPs post? He asked whether or not he should have been allowed to try and complete the game. Discussing whether or not he should have been allowed to complete the game is staying precisely on target.
  24. I think he's been doing fantastic and I love this article. I was talking shortstop defense a day or two ago and I have him as the third best defensive shortstop in baseball. I, too, wasn't impressed with his defense last year, and am gladly eating crow this year. One thing though. Sometimes people mistakenly think range factor measures range. RZR is the stat that measures range. Florimon is 6th in MLB for shortstops.
