  1. Thank you. They did exactly what some are suggesting we do and are getting slammed by the same people for doing it. Wait to make a big move or two until we think we only need a couple pieces to make a contender. Butler, Moustakas, Perez, Cain, Gordon, Hosmer, Escobar. Young talented players expected to do well, with some experience under their belt, now make a move to address problem areas. In their case, go get pitching. KC is where tehy're at now not becasue of the Myers trade, but because their position players aren't performing up to their abilities.
  2. We've got the top farm system in baseball. Teams trade prospects all the time for talent. Small market teams, low revenue team and teams that are forced to have a low payroll seem to prefer trading talent for prospects. Some of those teams that fall under one or more of those three categories, are in a constant state of rebuilding until they finally go for it, like KC did this year, then they get lambasted for daring to finally try cause they thought their position players were ready. We do not fall under any of those categories, yet we don't trade our prospects for MLB talent, because we value them too high. We value them that high because we aren't going to go out and get quality talent in the FA market so we hope and pray they work out. So the times they don't, and the law of averages says that happens often with all teams and their prospects, those once good trading chips that other teams valued as well, lose all value.
  3. By reactionary, I meant that since they were one of the last teams to dive into the Carribean market, then they were reacting to what most every other team was doing. Since we were talking aggressive versus not aggressive, I think that goes on to the not aggressive side.
  4. I just threw up a little in my mouth.
  5. That's too much playing it safe for me, but that's just me (not talking about the Gonzalez part). I've noticed that some of the top 30 international prospects that continue to be unsigned aren't able to be signed until mid August. That could be part of it, if one is wanting to give benefit of the doubt that they'll grab one of those guys.
  6. Wasn't Puig the same way?
  7. I'm not even sure I like that strategy. it's certainly not aggressive. the Cubs were aggressive this year. I'd rather have two or three highly thought of international prospects than one highly thought of prospects and 4 or 5 other guys I got on the cheap.
  8. Well, that kind of makes it not some much aggressive but rather reactionary. Still good that he did it, for sure, but if you're one of the last to get out there, that's not aggressive. See, this is why I like coming here. There are times when one can really learn something if they're open to learning something, that is.
  9. That's enlightening. Thanks, man.
  10. In what way? I'm not saying you're wrong, but I don't really see how.
  11. My question, and it's a serious one, when has Ryan ever really been aggressive on any front in acquiring talent? I'm trying to rememeber when he ever was. Getting Santana in rule 5 isn't aggressive. Trading away AJ when he became completely expendable with the emergence of Mauer, doesn't really fit the bill either.
  12. Because it has nothing to do with record from last season.
  13. This might be worth starting it's own thread.
  14. His career ERA away from New York is barely over 4.00. Take him away from the run happy division and away from Yankee Stadium and let's see how it works out. That's something I'd like to see.
  15. Sure they are. They have the top farm system in the majors. A 2nd round pick for a pitcher like Hughes that could be giving us sub 4.00 ERA for 5, 6 years, absolutely. A proven player as opposed to hoping our #2 draft picks makes it sometime. Now, nicksaviking said draft pick and the money to sign him may not be worth it. That makes sense. The combo of things makes sense. Then again, the more I think about it, who else will we be spending our money on? So while I think his thought on this has serious merit, and could certainly be correct, I'm not 100% sold. This is all a debate, cause it won't happen.
  16. You don't think Hughes would be worth a 2nd round pick? That's what we'd give up, right. Or am I wrong about that? He has a career ERA barely over 4.00 away from Yankees stadium while playing in the toughest division in baseball.
  17. Here's dem rules :-) Explaining Qualifying Offers: MLB Rumors - MLBTradeRumors.com
  18. We may be splitting hairs. The only reason a team makes a qualifying offer is for the draft compensation. If there is no draft compensation to receive, then it's just a contract offer...no need to have the term qualifying offer in there.
  19. Even IF the Twins could offer Hughes a qualifying offer once they got him, which they can't, they wouldn't do it. They wouldn't offer him that kind of money. They wouldn't take that chance with him.
  20. I think Nick was talking about Hughes. Read it again. Trade him (meaning Hughes) for Morneau. maybe I misread.
  21. That whole excuse for drafting futility is really tiresome and with all the examples of quality players drafted in later rounds that were bypassed for barely is and never-will-bes, it just doesn't hold water.
  22. I think the Rays would be good for Morny.
  23. Okay, just wondering. I think the scenario was Stewart and other(s). Out of curiousity, how many drafted high school arms have you figured wouldn't end up being ace material but ended up being ace material. It's not a post meant to attack but would you have said that two years ago about Fernandez and player X dominating in the bigs?
