  1. I'm pretty sure the Twins traded Camp FOR Santana and Cash. 'Back in 1999, Camp, a then rocket-throwing prospect, was traded from the Twins to the Florida Marlins for cash, and some dude named, Johan Santana.' 'After the 1999 major league season, he was left unprotected by the Houston Astros and eligible in the Rule 5 draft. The Minnesota Twins had the first pick that year, the Florida Marlins had the second. The Twins made a deal with the Marlins: the Twins would draft Jared Camp with their first pick and the Marlins would draft Santana. The teams would exchange the two players with the Twins receiving $50,000 to cover their pick.[2][3]' Thanks for the info on AJ though. So we have one example. Do we think he does it again with Morneau?
  2. Is it strange that the top three pitching staffs in strikeouts are AL teams? Top 3 4 of the top 5 7 of the top 10. 702Ks in the AL right now, 684 in the NL
  3. wow, that's unbelievable.
  4. Mauer is 5th in the American League in runs created. 5th! He's doing this from the 2 spot, oh and he's doing it while playing the toughest spot on the diamond. And somehow that equates to him having little actual impact on games? Not to mention the defense. I am constantly amazed at some Twins fans inability to see how great of a player Mauer is.
  5. Yes, it should. That's what I said. But the range he had in RF blew other RFs out of the water, cause he has CF range when most RFs, well, don't. Got to remember who he was being compared to for his UZR, so we have to take that into count and the difference was sizable and certainly more important overall, than arm. His weak arm didn't knock down his UZR enough though, it's why I said I hope they look at putting a bit more importance on arm.
  6. At least Ryan has a very good understanding of the situation we're in and Gardy and his role in it. 'General manager Terry Ryan gave Gardenhire a vote of confidence before Friday's game, calling reports that Gardenhire and the Twins could part ways inaccurate. "It doesn't bother me at all, because there's no validity to it," Ryan said. "He and I are the leadership of this organization, and we take accountability. He is basically in the clubhouse and in the dugout, and I'm in charge of the whole operation, and we both are feeling like we're letting the people down. It's as simple as that."'
  7. Anyone taking bets his ERA end up near if not over 5.00 by the end of the year?
  8. Could it be because Revere is playing a different position from last year to this year? Fangraphs said he was, at CF, -1 in in 2011, -3 in 2012, and -2 this year. That's pretty consistent. Last year in RF though, he was at +11 runs saved. Using overall OF numbers isnt gonna work, gotta look at the different positions. On top of that, I hope they address the arm part of the equation, because they've never seemed to me to give it enough importance.,
  9. Well, you know, that's how defense is judged. Like starting pitching is judged on wins/loss stat...and walk totals :-)
  10. apologies. I misunderstood your PM

Well, in that case, we're talking Marquess of Queensberry rules... :-)
  12. I'll say again: I know it's convenient to blame all of this on Smith, but most of the guys who came through the system, made the bigs and didn't perform/aren't performing in 2011-now, were brought in during Ryan's time....especially the pitchers. On top of that, if Smith did that bad of a job, then Ryan mis-evaluated Smith's ability when he made him assistant GM and then later highly recommended him to be GM.
  13. Yeah, in the end, the fact that players get better later in their career with another team is hardly unique to the Twins. Again, not to excuse the coaching, because it's a factor, but it's not exclusively a Twins issue.

I love the way this kid plays the game. I think there should be more like him. He goes all out all the time and he seems to enjoy it. I agree with Schoenfield in regards to Puig. here' what he had to say: Yasiel Puig's arrogance not a bad thing - SweetSpot Blog - ESPN
  15. I didn't take it afield, VodkaDave did when he mentioned the guy who replaced Ryan and his trades to try and make a point. The conversation flowed that way, but I didn't make it flow that way. besides, wouldn't captaining a ship be more like the on-field manager while the person who designed the ship more like the GM? :-)
  16. Yeah, but how long did it take for Gomez to get nurtured? This is year seven of his career, his fourth year away from us. he finally clicks and it's solely Now, believe me, I'm not letting the coaching off the hook and I'm not defending them, I'm saying if it doesn't seem like a player is working out for us, from a FO standpoint, the FO needs to do something about it. That's all. I'm all for a new pitching coach, I was glad to see Vavra released for him hitting coach duties, but still. Some of the blame has to fall on the players themselves.
  17. For the most part, I don't buy into the whole idea of saying 'hey look, after X many years this former Twin is doing well.' Liriano wasn't doing well for us, nor had he for awhile. A team can only wait so long. Same thing with Gomez. Hardy is a bit different because here's a guy who had established himself as a pretty darn good player, especially defensively, and we let him go after one season (on Gardy's request). If there was a player who deserved a bit more time, it was him. Overall though, I don't assume that if player X had stayed, he would have done as well for us as he ended up doing elsewhere. If they do, good for them, but it's hard for me to knock the FO for Gomez, Dickey, Liriano.
  18. I think it's easier to argue against a point if you morph the point to an extreme version of itself.
  19. Yeah, who was that guy that highly recommended Smith to be GM after making him his assistant GM earlier? Oh, and how long did it take Ryan to make a contender after taking over, eight years? How long was Smith at the helm, four? And who was one of his special advisers? Ryan right? I know it's convenient to blame all of this on Smith, but most of the guys who came through the system, made the bigs and didn't perform/aren't performing, were brought in during Ryan's time....especially the pitchers. Not only that, but MLB team under Smith did pretty well until his last year. Not exactly an easy thing considering he lost Hunter and Santana because Ryan hadn't signed them earlier.
  20. Smith has contributed positively to the farm system as well. It's not like Ryan has done it by himself. Ryan did have the benefit of having a couple really high draft picks, which he didn't make and was a result of losing a lot. While I liked the Span and Revere trades based on what Ryan was trying to accomplish, so far the Revere trade might end up being a big dud. Heck both might. And then what do we say about his involvement in the stocking of the farm system so far?
  21. I'm still a big Span fan, but I liked the Span and Revere trades and I think in two or three years Hicks is easily better than either of them.
  22. Serious question. Have the Twins ever eaten salary in a trade since the 2000s began? I'm not sure that's an option for them strictly on philosophy, but again, don't know for sure. It's why I'm asking if anyone can give specifics.
  23. Too often, we trade players that are close to their lowest value instead of trading while their value is high. Sometimes we just let them go to FA. If the plan is to solely build this team up through trade and the farm system, we have to trade players when they are at their peak value to get players to help us in two or three years instead of waiting for those trade chips to become too old and/or less effective to the point where their trade value is minimal or non-existent.
