  1. So we can say let's save money at a time when money is plenty available for the forseeable future, which does the fan no good, but the owner plenty good. Or spend it on a player who likely helps now, likely helps later and could also help later by being a valuable trade chip to get more pieces. Downside, we lost money that didn't hurt us to spend in any way and that wouldn't have been put into payroll somewhere down the road if we hadn't spent it.
  2. And that pitcher, like all players, is a tradeable asset, like all quality players are. No rule says you need to keep him all five years. You could flip him two, three years down the road for a quality prospect or two or whatever. Not signing a player like him gives you no options. No quality pitching in any years nor the ability to trade him for more prospects down the road. By signing him, the only thing you lose for sure is money for awhile which is not a problem right now anyway, or in the foreseeable future.
  3. he's already going in that direction so hopefully.
  4. I don't think he gets it over Pedroia, but when looking at real positive things about this year, the defense of our current middle infield is pretty high on the list.

  6. Pedro has been top notch defensively. I am very surprised and am very happily eating crow in regards to his defense. nice post!
  7. Hard to believe we only have two OF right now of the active roster. Of course there's always catcher/DH Doumit and 3B Plouffe we can put out there.
  8. Cool. Thanks for the answers.
  9. So now the QS start is so bad, it's reached the depths of how bad the win/loss stat is for pitchers?
  10. Well, one would argue that most if not all free agents are what they are by the time they get to FA. They are close to if not at or over 30. Why is thats an argument against Varags and Nolasco and not everyone else? And what Vargas and Nolasco are right now are darn good pitchers. Nothing wrong with just getting that. Lincecum si going to cost, but after last year and this not as much as one might think. Besides, it's not like we're strapped for cash. :-)
  11. I've never understood that hometown argument either. For the standpoint of wanting them over other players or that we think we have an 'in' with him because he's from Minnesota. I'm from California, and I wouldn't move back there unless the offer from a company was so over the top ridiculous as to like quadruple my current salary along with my wife's and no other company in most any other state came close.
  12. Where are you reading posts like that cause I swear, I haven't seen one person say anything like that. Not to say I didn't miss some, surely could have.
  13. Well, first, that hypothetical situation never happens. Of the top 10 guys with QS, the highest ERA is 3.42. The next 10, only one is over 3.50. The next 10, only two over 4.00 (barely). Second, it discounts that one of a starting pitcher's jobs is to not burn the bullpen. Third, when these two phypothetical pitchers left, both pitchers gave their team a decent chance to win, but one was able to save the manager from having to have 30 extra innings tacked onto an already overworked bullpen.
  14. They didn't trade Gomez twice did they, Nick? :-)
  15. okay, you didn't answer when we'll be competitive, which kind of nullifies everything else you wrote. I'm asking, when is that definitive year that the Twins will be competitive when we can go out and sign FA pitching during the offseason prior in order to ensure none of his years will be wasted?
  16. Johnson because he's a Minnesota guy I imagine? Or is it that you think we have a better chance with all his injury history. I guess I'm not asking who you think it's more realistic that we sign so much as who we actually should target. If those two are at the top of the list, why? Why them over the three I mentioned? Just asking
  17. No one on this thread was blaming the Twins for trading Gomez were they?
  18. When will this team be ready to compete? Wouldn't getting quality pitching accelerate that time frame.
  19. Just those two? Not Lincecum or Nolasco or Vargas?
  20. If you ignore the FA market as one of many way to build a quality team, how do you get quality players to build a team if you are unwilling to trade a player at his highest trade value during rebuilding years. You say go find some more all stars. How? We going to get all stars with our dregs?
  21. Most free agents are close to if not 30 or over. Most players don't hit the big till they are 24, 25. 6 years of team control...
  22. I appreciate the list, it's informative, but I was asking drjim's opinion of the class and maybe a list of pitchers he thinks the Twins should target.
  23. For #1: Well, it took him 6 or 7 years to do it his first go around, didn't it? For #2: I don't give the GM credit or blame for individual drafts. If it's bad draft afetr bad draft over and over, then you have to look at the GM's decision to retain the head scout. There's also player development in the minors, which plays a big roll.
