  1. We can't trade Kohl Stewart right now, but would we even want to do that? I'm not sure we would.
  2. That pretty funny right there!:-)
  3. We don't seem to do that very often. I think we covet our prospects too much when in reality a small percentage succeed. Then once coveted prospects fail, they have no value. Teams are after quality prospects in trades, especially the teams forced to have a lower budget and/or have a horrible farm system. Since we have the top farm system in baseball, and don't need to have such a low budget, I don't think it's unreasonable to at least look to try and trade one of our better prospects or two.
  4. The discussion was whether or not Rauch was doing his job that year for us or not. He was. Anything before or after that is irrelevant to the conversation. Your post doesn't change the facts of my post.
  5. Thanks, but I'm perfectly okay with my reasoning in that post. New CBA is nice though, no doubt.
  6. Exactly. He was the closer the first four months of that season before being replaced and we only lost one game in which he was brought in to close the game.
  7. How many first or second rounders start for the Rays?
  8. And their recently departed ace pitcher, James Shields, a 16th rounder. Got plenty out of him in pitching and trade.
  9. Ah, but would he be getting more than league minimum on any other team? Just like would any other manager say that signing Punto is our #1 priority and if signed he's my starting shortstop prompting the FO to pay Punto 8M over two years? :-)
  10. Nice thread there butterfingers8! And only your second post! Hopefully brings up some good debates.
  11. KC had how many years of high draft picks? The Pirates? Red Sox didn't even have a first rounder in 2004, somehow got Pedroia in the 2nd round. In fact lots of talent that year in the 2nd-6th round. Pedroia, Desmond, Pence, Vargas, Gallardo, Lind, Zobrist. There's talent everywhere in the draft, though the odds are indeed better if you're in the top 10, though plenty of busts there too.
  12. During your chastising, you brought up Pujols and Mauer. Position players. But overall, I personally understood you meant pitchers. I was expanding the scope to another poster, that's all.
  13. I remember the year Plouffe and Perkins were drafted. I wanted the Twins to get Pedroia bad. We had six chances. Red Sox come in, their first pick of the draft (which came in the second round), and get him. What a let down. He was the one position player in that draft I was craving to be a Twin, and we had six chances to get him.
  14. They were absolutely willing to sign him to a huge contract.
  15. Do you think it was irresponsible for the Mets to sign Wright so long or the Rockies to sign Tulo for so long?
  16. Gardy said he earned it?
  17. According to COTS, they are at 82 million, that's with the pro-rated signing bonuses. Jeremy, who has been keeping track for us, has updated it to a hair over 81M. They normally spend 50-52% of payroll. They haven't seen revenue under 200 million yet at TF. Last year it was 214M, so payroll could have been 107M last year at the lowest if following their model. So it'd be weird they'd project only 180M in revenue this year to say 90M was our payroll limit, especially with them tying season tickets to the All Star game. It's not crazy to think that they probably could have come close to 102 or so million, no? It's not about how much further it's dropped from last year, my number comes from what they likely had to spend versus what they spent.
  18. Speaking of the All-Star game. Does anyone else find if odd than Melancon could only find a spot on the roster as a replacement? Here's a reliever that has 44 IP, 46Ks, a WHIP under .800 and an ERA of 0.81. I know the competition is fierce, but come on man!
  19. But when talking about the kind of quality you've gotten from a starting pitcher, the MLB defined stat of quality start can't be used and we can clearly understand how to come up with it. Got it. That also doen't explain away the arbitrary nature of the stat WAR.
  20. I don't remember that game being played with Hunter. As I remember it, he had a pinch running game one year, and that's it. Barely sniffed the team the next (I think due to injury), then from then it was on. I probably remember incorrectly though, I was out of the country at around that time.
  21. So you have no issue with the WAR stat, a stat some people say is so arbitrary there isn't even a consensus into how it's calculated. I like the WAR stat, myself, but talk about a stat that seriously takes into account advanced metrics being right on the ball.
  22. Of that list of players I listed, who do you think won't be replaced by someone in the farm system? Our backup catcher, our utility IF, our 1B, our LF or one or both of the two pitchers (one that isn't even pitching for us right now, so he doesn't really need replacing). Or even the third pitcher I forgot to mention who will also be off payroll in 2015. There is always financial risk when signing ANY quality player for ANY long period of time during ANY time in a team's development. That's comes with the job. Right now is the time when we can MOST afford to take the risk, when payroll is low and going much lower in the next two years while we get an additional 25M coming in as well.
  23. Look towards 2015, consider payroll being shed in the next year or two, what the makeup of our team will consist of, and tell us where are all of our monetary obligations are going to be. Then tell us where his 16M is going to stop us from being able to sign players? That's even before the new TV contract 25M coming in. If his 16M wouldn't have hurt us THIS year, how will it hurt after the payrolls of Blackburn, Pelfrey, Carroll, Morneau, Doumit, Willingham and the like are off payroll and replaced by pre-arbitration players.
  24. Who was the big addition brought in to help the rotation THIS year?
