    I'm willing to part with good prospects to bring back a young, cost controlled catcher. Perhaps a bullpen rental arm for cheap but that's it. We can patch SS together with Escobar and I still believe Santana will improve enough on both sides of the ball to be a starter at short for the near future, just starting next year. I would part with Polanco in a trade. He's eventually going to be a second baseman and I like the one we have better. Plus, he's got to stop playing the anvil chorus or he's going nowhere - CLANG!

    While I agree that Allen's role has been a positive factor in the improvement, the biggest factor is Ryan's decision to bring in a stable of competent pitchers to choose from thereby ensuring competition for starting spots and protection against injuries, suspensions, etc. We've actually had a number of things not go our way in this regard and we still haven't given a start to Cole DeVries.

    The biggest improvement we could make is to determine if May or Pelfrey are better suited to pitching multiple days in a row and roll the dice making them the next most important bullpen member after Perkins and Fien. While I hope Tonkin makes it, I think he doesn't have the required stuff. One reason why we should have all been pulling for Nolasco is that he could have been added to the pen as well. While not great, it would be a credible arm to go to.

    Sure looked like the old Pelfrey last night. Two possible silver linings he puts together a couple of good starts and is attractive at the deadline and maybe may boosts the pen

    I think we should go to a 7 man rotation. They each would have an assigned day of the week and everybody would know when they need to pitch

    Shouldn't that make Meyer a shoo in for the Hall of Fame?

    I am not against a trade to help this year but only if it helps long term as well. Catcher would come to mind as well as SS.

    His throwing is an issue and seems to be due to arm strength. He also has to clean up his fielding before he will succeed in the majors.

    The irony here will be that if Pelfrey continues to pitch this well all year he will have earned the $15 million the Twins will pay him.

    I would think by now, people would realize that you don't have 5 starters for 5 spots. Things always happen and may happen again even before Santana comes back. This is not a problem: too many starters? Doesn't our bullpen need a bunch of help? Any one of those starters could go to the pen right now and help. And it wouldn't hurt any of them (including Gibson and May) to spend a couple of months in the pen in order for us to continue winning. Even though he has pitched so well, I could see Pelfrey being our Wade Davis. Nolasco is definitely in the pen - he's not been reliable and frankly is now number 7 in the pecking order.

    I do think moving him up in the order might fit his OBP mindset. Even that is not what it once was but probably more doable in the short term. Dozier's the best hitter on the club right now and it ain't even close. Swap he and Joe and let's see what happens.

    I think the concern specifically is arm strength, not that he won't clean up his fielding. SS is a tough position and requires a set of skills that are pretty elite. Its tough to be a good SS in the big leagues without a strong arm. It changes your positioning, limits your range, just generally diminishes the number and variety of plays you can make.

    I know everyone gets worried about "logjams" but I really appreciate the depth they have. We had a suspension and Nolasco's injuries and we still are not trotting out Pedro Hernandez to take starts. Plus, our eventual bullpen solution might come from this depth when Santana arrives. How are Milone's splits against lefties? This team needs a loogy in the worst way.....

    It doesn't take Casey Stengel to realize their lineup has holes. They are going to go into scoring droughts as well as hot streaks because of this fact. A reason to be optimistic is that starting pitching is a huge part of the equation and the Twins are doing pretty well in this area and should get better when Santana comes back. The first two games against the Royals were good examples - their hitting was cold but were still in both games due to good pitching. I also think the pen can get fixed up, at least a little bit with parts they already have. I would start with whatever starter not named Milone loses out in the rotation goes right to the pen. Bottom line: I predicted .500 at the beginning of the year and that's what I still expect. Big jump over the last few years.

    I would like to second the notion that, while Stauffer was essentially useless, Tonkin needs to be a whole lot better than he has been. Opportunities for him haven't been the problem - he really hasn't pitched that well. So the only real difference we know for sure is that Tonkin is younger. Better or more talented remains to be seen.

    Yesterday he threw a split at 79 and followed it up with a fastball at 94. That is a really large difference - like Johan in his heyday. Last year, it seemed that everything was the same speed. I am starting to think this will not be a fluke. As long as the Twins are in contention, you keep him. What to do with hm next year if he keeps pitching like this will be a very interesting question. Right now, I like him better than any other starter we have.

    Pretty obvious that Phil misses Rick Anderson. He was the one that straightened out his pitch selection.

    Funny, I have the same feeling but we really shouldn't feel that way this year as he's barely walking anybody. I like that he looks like a workhorse - like he could go for years without hitting the DL.

    Trade Plouffe before the deadline (assuming they believe Sano will stick at third). His value will be at its highest and Escobar can fill in at third until Sano is ready.
