  1. There really weren't options for one year deals for CFs in free agency. Only other option was to not trade Span and Revere.
  2. KC and the Twins were in quite different circumstances going into the season. And there is no correlation between criticizing Moore and defending Ryan. Not sure how you came to that conclusion.
  3. Has any Twins decision involving prospects this year made you think they will hesitate to call up prospects if they are ready?
  4. It has to be a combination no doubt. But any future success is going to be primarily driven by internal improvement. Smart free agents and trades can supplement but not drive a turnaround. I think the Twins sign a starter or two and a bat, but unless some young guys emerge it won't matter.
  5. I always thought Souhan was pretty baseball savvy but it's a little disappointing that his main suggestion is to call up prospects before they are ready.
  6. Phil Miller points out that the Rochester OF this werkend will be Willingham-Hicks-Parmelee and Minnesota will be Arcia-Thomas-Herrmann. Don't think that was in the opening day plans.
  7. The only source I saw say that was Bowden. Others such as Wolfson said differently.
  8. It's actually pretty middle of the pack if not slightly above average. Pretty rare for teams to have several arms at AA or AAA. I would recommend taking a look at a few other farm systems for some context.
  9. I thought this was going to be a poll about how soon Butera would be back in the Twins organization and terrorizing half this board.
  10. If they keep him down for 20 days they get an extra year of control. He would have to spend some significant time in the minors next year to avoid being a super 2 after the 2015 season.
  11. I would hope so. Clear him now and hope that he runs off a couple of good weeks. About 10 years ago Boston did something similar with David Wells. Ran him through right away when he was struggling, he put a couple of good starts together and they traded him to San Diego for a catcher that got a little run (though was more of a AAAA guy).
  12. This is by next July. Buxton might be aggressive but good chance the rest will be ready.
  13. I think you are quite mistaken here. They signed free agents that wouldn't block prospects and kept payroll flexibility for when the kids start to emerge. Last year they had few worthwhile prospects and this year they have already debuted 4 rookies that should play significant roles going forward and other fringe guys. They still have to field a roster and they can't play kids that aren't ready or it is a team of guys like Hicks. They need to bring rookies up a couple at a time for service issues but probably moreso for performance issues.
  14. I think they are more or less headed there. None of the elite prospects will stay blocked by mediocre vets. I don't have a problem with keeping a few vets around to help ease the transition. Pinto is probably not enough of a stick to be a full time dh. And there will be room for a FA pitcher or two. As a side note - I can only imagine the angst about payroll if the Twins roll out this roster.

    Arcia

I agree more or less with your analysis of the major league team but your thoughts on the minors need a little perspective. There will always be more prospects in the lower levels based on the nature of prospects, as they advance there is a certain amount of attrition. That said, the have three elite bats in the upper levels and mlb quality arms in Meyer/May/Tonkin. There probably isn't a franchise that can match that, though Boston would be close. Outside of Arcia I'm not too concerned about anyone else in AA or AAA because they either aren't quite ready or will be fringe starters at best.
  16. Quantity is quite valuable when projecting 16 year olds. And just because a couple of lists you read are mostly used up doesn't mean there aren't guys left. I was surprised to read they had already spent about $3 mil. They have signed guys none of us even know about.
  17. I'm really curious what the top offer for Perkins was. The only upshot is if he doesn't regress his value will be the same in a year.
  18. We have no idea on what the different offers were. Reports are that he offered money but wasn't satisfied with the return. We are speculating on if there was a limit to money or what the quality of the prospect actually was. The ultimate fact is Morneau had virtually no value no matter how nuch money the Twins picked up. And any deal is probably still more or less there in August.
  19. I just think people should be realistic about Albers. Nothing more. But I agree no one should be blocking him.
  20. Since when does Butera not count? I agree, but I would like to know what, if anything, was offered for the relievers. There was no reason to trade any of them for a warm body, they can all come back next year.
  21. The most optimistic answer is that he could pass through waivers, hit better for a couple of weeks, and then be moved for a better return of prospect/salary. The other answer is I just don't agree you dump a guy for nothing unless there is a clear player he is blocking. They are still trying to win games.
  22. The bigger issue is probably that he'll be lucky to be as good as Diamond. But what the hell, might as well give him a shot.
  23. I think sunk cost is being used incorrectly here. If the alternatives are to dump him (and his salary) for a minor league roster filler vs. keep him on the roster, an argument can be made to just keep him (he's not exactly blocking any 1B prospects right now). This has nothing to do with sunk cost. Terry Ryan can just as easily dump him in August. My take reading between the lines is Terry Ryan didn't just want to dump him, he wanted something worthwhile in return. I think the lack of any return, not the money, was the more decisive factor.
  24. Probably not pointless if he is good enough to start the season next year. And outside of one example, how exactly have they blundered service time.
