  1. How is the Saunders situation a debacle? They bid on him and he signed elsewhere for whatever reason. This isn't a fantasy auction. And they did bid on Iwakura but were beat by the A's who didn't sign him. He got hurt and sognes with the Ms. He re-signed without really hitting the market.
  2. I should have said "vast majority" not "everyone". And I also think that "happy" comment was about the front office and directly contradicts what Ryan has said. Your second point is certainly valid I also thought the moves made would result in an upgrade. It still very easily could. Season isn't over yet.
  3. My main response to this is that Ryan dod use all avenues. He traded for three guys, signed two mlb free agents, and a couple of minor league guys. Obviously people wanted better mlb free agents but I personally don't think there were much better realistic options. The guys I wanted (McCarthy, Marcum) would have been worse.
  4. I would absolutely agree that Ryan failed at achieving his goals. I would also respond by saying that every thing would have had to go about perfect for any kind of significant improvement in starting pitching performance.
  5. And why do you assume everyone here is not annoyed by the performance of the team right now?
  6. 1. That is a huge leap to assume he would be up right now, much less effective. 2. That is a fantasy. Those guys weren't coming to tbis franchise. I think Correia is a top 5 guy from the pool. 3. That's fine but his nunbers would probably be Pelfrey-esque so little improvement. I appreciate the plan. Skeptical it could be executed or would have made much of a difference.
  7. Indeed. Raging against the hypothetical. I also would say people have really unrealistic expectations on how quickly and effectively an entire rotation can be turned over. The rotation imploded in every spot in 2012. It's not going to be fixed a year later. Especially with a mediocre (at best) free agent class and few options in the upper minors. This is the mess Ryan inherited.
  8. I also hold out the possibility that he doesn't know what he is talking about and is making numbers up.
  9. Charley Walters just tweeted the Twins have spent about $3 mil of the $3.9 mil cap. I guess we don't have all the numbers on who signed. They shouldn't exceed the cap but absolutely should spend it all. This money can go until next signing period.
  10. No. He is signed for the pre-arb rate so Ryan didn't spend enough money and the Pohlad's get more profit.
  11. I personally wouldn't compare the previous era to the past two years, completely different scenarios. And I think two years is probably too small a sample size to make sweeping conclusions. In the past two offseasons Ryan has guaranteed about $47 mil in free agent contracts (of players that were not with the Twins before signing the contract). I would wager that is at least 5x as much as he spent in his previous 13 year stint combined.
  12. Yes. I fear the Twins know exactly what they have with Parmelee but they want to give him one more chance to sort it out. He has not lacked for opportunities the last two seasons, he just hasn't done anything with them.
  13. Would it be wrong to summarize your post as follows: Taking another look at the FA options from last summer, Terry Ryan probably made the right decisions. However, he should still have spent money because that would be exciting and he possibly would have signed one of the good free agents from last offseason that didn't actually exist. Overall, there is no faith in Terry Ryan because he didn't spend on free agents when he was GM previously even though the payroll/revenue situation was quite different than today. Even though the payroll/revenue situation is now different we have great knowledge of how Terry Ryan thinks and acts and have made conclusions about the years going forward based on this knowledge.
  14. One thing I find amazing about other sports is that basketball/hockey will have a couple of gaps of this length each season while football obviously has 6/7 days off between each game and it seems normal, or perhaps even plays into the strength/popularity of the sport. One more reason why baseball is awesome, actual games instead of endless chatter about games just played or soon to be played.
  15. Do you mean they don't spend money? Because trading two major league CFs for AA pitchers seems like a risk to me.
  16. It is certainly possible he was afraid of signing a contract or two, but he also had been GM for 14 years and was probably worn out. It is almost unheard of for a GM to stay with one team for that long.
  17. I personally liked the Shields trade for the Royals and thought it was a worthwhile gamble. There was reason to believe that the offense was ready to take a step forward from last year and that an upgraded pitching staff would make a difference. Of course Shields himself is not a 15 win guy, but they upgraded other pitchers and some of the additional upgrade could be expected from the young positions players. I hope people don't think hitters 25 and younger stay static. Myers is a fine prospect but he is a corner OF. He could definitely become a stud but he is more likely to settle in at a .800-.820ish OPS which is a fine player but not so good that it cripples a franchise to lose him. Trading a corner OF for a starter is a good swap. The other aspect is if the Royals fall flat again next year they can still move Shields before the deadline. That would recoup some of the value of Myers.
  18. I wouldn't criticize the Twins for staying within the cap, but I would criticize the Twins for not spending it all. There are a handful of guys in the top 30 that haven't signed and the Twins do have the money for one more big signing. Maybe the Cubs have found the right loophole, wouldn't be surprised if MLB changes it but the Cubs and Rangers should be penalized next year.
  19. The system is an easy #1 right now. If you read the mainstream guys they continually quote scouts of how the Twins are similar to the Rangers of 2007-2008.
  20. I'll add that Keith Law has explicitly said that he encourages posting excerpts from his article as long as the link is included. It matches perfectly with the policy here.
  21. Actually the 2000 first round was awful. Three really good players, a couple of bit players and not much else. 2000 Amateur Draft - BR Bullpen
  22. The Twins have 13 guys they drafted on the 40 man roster, here is the breakdown by round: 1st - 6 (Mauer, Plouffe, Hicks, Gibson, Perkins, Parmelee) 2nd - 1 (Swarzak) 3rd - 2 (Morneau, Duensing) 6th - 2 (Herrmann, Hermsen) 8th - 1 (Dozier) 30th - 1 (Tonkin) Not sure how this compares to other teams, but they have at least gotten some role players later. Eddie Rosario was a 4th rounder as well.
  23. The "nils" for the Twins were Moses and Gutierrez. There were no negatives so the rankings wouldn't be much different. I generally agree with your premise. It was quick and dirty, could be a useful thing to look at in more depth.
