  1. This. There really isn't a market for Fien. Probably better to trade a different reliever and let Fien fill the role vacated.
  2. I could be mistaken but I don't think Ryan defenders deflect blame to Pohlad.
  3. I'm quite confident Ryan is not satisfied with where the team is right now. It would be an indictment if it was true.
  4. Confirmed on Twitter. I hope they are just being extra cautious.
  5. 39th rounder Scott Wagner signed. 6'8 HS lefty. Don't know bonus.
  6. So now you're telling me what my point was? I did a quick comparison and thought about the pitchers that were signed. That seemed most relevant when thinking about the moves of the Twins this past offseason and comparing them to moves made by a team in a similar situation. The Cubs signed more guys so will probably get more total value on the field and in possible trades. Part of that reason is that the Twins had more young guys to plug into positions that the Cubs had to fill with veterans last offseason (ie corner OF). The Twins shouldn't be punished for that in a fair comparison. In my opinion the one area to honestly criticize Terry Ryan last offseason was with the free agent starters that he signed. It seemed reasonable to compare his track record in that area to the team that many people thought is doing the best job in rebuilding at the moment. I would also add that my preference was to sign McCarthy and Marcum. That would have been a worse result, with minimal innings and nothing in return via trade.
  7. Let's pump it up around here!
  8. No need to worry, he is the very able hands of the Twins medical staff.
  9. I forgot about Villanueva to be honest, he has had a pretty solid year. I didn't include Schierholtz in my thinking because the Twins had no need for a corner OF last offseason.
  10. Here are ip/era/xfip/fip for the three 110.2/4.23/4.70/4.22 93.1/5.50/3.88/3.81 76.2/5.63/4.19/4.88 This also doesn't take into account that an NL pitcher has a few advantages. I would say he is marginally better (at best) according to these stats.
  11. Keep in mind this guy is a 29 year old in AAA. I'm all in favor of him getting a nice look this season when a spot opens up, but there is hardly the need to take extra steps to make that process happen. He is not part of a youth movement and is almost certainly not part of any future success. He is 4 years older than Parmelee.
  12. And also, I want to state that I am by no means criticizing the Cubs, Theo, or their plan. I think it is a sound plan and I would be happy with it if I was a Cubs fan. I would be plenty happy if Theo was running the Twins right now. I just think, for all the killing of Terry Ryan, the difference in the results of the two plans from last offseason will ultimately end up being pretty small.
  13. Or maybe those don't quite readjust and normalize as expected because he is not as good as he once was. Or he gets hurt. Anyways, I don't especially care about Edwin Jackson and I wouldn't want that contract on the Twins going forward.
  14. I agree they got more value. I said as much. And while you might not call the model others are slurping them pretty good. I thought it would be instructive to take a look and see what the difference actually is. A little marginal value and Jackson's contract, which will probably determine the true difference in the approaches. And I would dispute that the Cubs clearly got better results on the field, it seems relatively equal to me in the sense that if the Twins had signed Feldman, Baker and Jackson instead of Pelfrey and Correia, their record would be pretty much the same. And the Cubs spent over twice as much to get those marginal on the field gains, so I would hope they got them (which isn't to excuse the Twins lack of spending).
  15. Jackson is indeed (marginally) better than the pitchers the Twins signed. For that contract he better be.
  16. Doubtful. Unfortunately front offices look at more than stat lines.

    Liriano

Probably would have needed a change of pitching coaches too.
  18. I agree money doesn't matter here. My point is that for all the praise heaped on the Cubs the difference will end up being pretty marginal. And they are still stuck with Jackson's contract.
  19. Maybe. They were aggressive but I'm not sure the end results will be much different than the Twins. Drafts were similar. Main guy at slot and nothing too different after that. International was covered. Cubs obviously better this year but Twins will close that gap when they retain a full pool next year. Free agency is the question. I won't rehash the Twins other than to say they got mediocre guys who will bring little or nothing back in trades but did eat some starts. The Cubs were aggressive but had mixed results. Feldman worked out well and produced a little return for the investment. Gregg might bring back a little something and Baker was money lit on fire. Jackson may improve a little but he has had a bad year so far and is still locked in for three more years at good money. Contract probably can't be moved and that is money and a rotation spot locked in. So a little return was gained, nothing from Baker and a big question mark for Jackson. Trades will be interesting to monitor. Cubs should do well Garza. Twons moved their best two assets in the offseason. I'll grant the Cubs look better but the difference is not that substantial and depends how you factor lost value of Baker and question of Jackson. More than anything, to me, it shows that there is not a quick fix. The Cubs are everyone's model here and they got at best a little extra marginal value. And I would still much rather be the Twins organization right now than the Cubs.
  20. Yes to all of this. He is a hall of famer and a local guy. He is probably the only chance the franchise will have to generate positive buzz after three disastrous years. It could be fun to watch him emerge with a young core.
  21. That's all true but the international signing season is not over. There is a decent chance the sign another top 30 guy. If the get #10, another top 30, and a handful of other guys in the next tier that is good use of the pool. Guys are rated higher sure but there is no Sano here. There is wisdom, especially in this market, to spread the dollars around and get multiple decent prospects instead of all in on one or two. My only complaint would be if they fail to utilize the entire pool. That would be inexusable.
  22. I still think Molitor is the likely manager next year. Any move now should be made with the idea of making that transition as smooth as possible. I don't think bringing him in iver the break is a wise move. Glynn is an asset in the organization. It would be hard to move him to manager for a half season and then demote him. I also don't especially want the Scott Ullger show, which might be the best alternative in house. Not sure who from the outside would be willing to come in for 3 months and try to clean up this mess. Best option is probably just let Gardy ride it out.
  23. If they did let him go over the break who would take over the rest of the year? There isn't a realistic option in house and not sure who is floating out there.
  24. You do realize that if the team was better they would make more money right? They made way more money in 2010 than they will this year. I imagine they would like to return to that. They fired a GM and are about to let the manager go.
  25. I'm not so sure I would punt next year if I was the Cubs unless I didn't like the crop. Yes on Rangers, more skeptical of Cubs approach this year.
