  1. Sit him now so they don't even have to think of sitting him in the bigs. I have to say I'm excited by the swagger coming through the system. It will do this franchise some good.
  2. I agree selling tickets should be a nonfactor in trades (and I doubt it is). That said I still think it is quite reasonable to expect to take a leap next year so any trade should have that in mind. The only player of note that definitely won't be back next year is Morneau and he has very limited value, so there you go.
  3. I wasn't clear in my post. I definitely agree Perkins would get the most back. He is elite. But he also has great value to the Twins going forward. My point was that other relievers of lesser value would get something back more excess of their value relative to Perkins.
  4. I was referring to pitchers specifically. Say they resign Pelfrey and sign a guy like Hughes. Those two, along with Deduno and Gibson is 4 spots. They still have Diamond, Worley, May, Meyer and others in the mix. I would go for a one year flyer guy perhaps but wouldn't go big. I fully expect a corner of/1b type to also be signed and perhaps another bat as well.
  5. That is a great point on Perkins. Similar thinking/valuation probably came into play for Willingham last year - much less value than we think. Twins might not get great value for Perkins so probably better to keep him. Best value will probably be from middle relievers, in that they might get something for a pretty fungible resource.
  6. Correia will probably end up being less bad.
  7. Pelfrey might just be blowing smoke but he was quoted as saying he has talked to Anderson multiple times that he wants to stay and that he would be "devastated" if he was traded. I would seriously consider a reasonable two year deal. But if the Twins do that I would want to see Correia traded and one more free agent signed next offseason.
  8. A question : what would be "success" in your mind? A lot if season left - there is a chance they improve by 7-9 wins over last season. Also, Ryan on the radio last Saturday called this a "transitional" season. Do you think he is backtracking from failure or speaking clearly what he has thought and known all along? I can probably guess where you fall.
  9. I am aware that you think this way. I also think you are mistaken and that if the Twins followed your suggested path it would do more harm than good in the long run with the gain of a few wins in the present. Wins that may feel good now but are ultimately meaningless in the pursuit of a championship. This is a significant part of the ongoing debate.
  10. I appreciate your last two points but I would add two facts. The Twins have spent but it was on more bit guys. Mof course they should (and will) continue to do that. Correia, while not sexy, is a top five pitcher from last years free agents. They did something productive in that realm. What the Twins need is not better free agent signings, though one or two solid signings would be welcome, but in house improvement and the emergence of prospects to be competitive.
  11. Try google. And I thought most people, regardless of "side", were in favor of those signings.
  12. "Dead" is obviously an exaggeration and more refers to the thought that free agency can get a team out of a down cycle. The Twins did guarantee almost $50 mil combined the last two offseasons on free agency. You did identify the main Twins problem - a lack of elite talent developed recently. Free agency can't cover that.
  13. I personally think much of the debate comes down to the hypothetical and the real with three crappy seasons serving as the catalyst. I also don't understand why you wouldn't accept the possibility there are multiple factors that impact the Twins and free agency.
  14. These are terrible examples. Corner OFs hitting their decline phase that were replaced with minimal problems.
  15. If the Twins trade Perkins it has to be for a SS or SP that is going to be in the bigs no later than May. Anything else and I wouldn't be interested.
  16. Sure they make free agency. But I would personally respond to free agent examples with other free agent examples to make a valid comparison and to be relatively intellectually honest.
  17. Sure they can. It will just be in the form of locking up their own guys to extensions.
  18. Perhaps we can accept the reality that free agency is more or less dead. Money is best used locking up players on the roster. Most national writers have arguing this for years.
  19. Of course they were. Every publically subsidized stadium is a massive fraud.
  20. I would argue there were 2-3 guys that moved the needle. They were signed by teams that were top five payrolls and playoff contenders. The rest of the options were more or less Correia.
  21. You are comparing extension guys to free agents. That is pretty meaningless. There is a reason guys are extended vs. allowed to hit free agency.
  22. This would be a more damming critique if there were more than 2-3 options to spend money on. This is above and beyond the several other issues thay are being debated.
  23. All this is certainly possible. If you want my thoughts specifically on this I covered it pretty thoroughly earlier in the thread. Regarding free agency, I think it will lack the top end guys but has better options in the second tier. Dovetails nicely with the Twins needs.
  24. I think this is about the worst strategy a team in a down cycle can have. Chasing a few more wins with questionable contracts to mollify fans is a sure way to continue a cycle of mediocrity. The best thing the Twins did was avoid bad contracts for the next couple of years as the team is ready to ascend. It's not so much the money, the team can afford it, it is the roster spots underperforming the contracts and the loss of roster flexibility.
