  1. Thanks for this post, counter to most of what is said, but also very reasonable and probably realistic. I'm starting to come to this way of thinking, mostly because the Shields contract is going to blow past what I thought was possible a month ago, and I think the Twins are going to have less money than I anticipated.
  2. I agree with this. But I think "lesser" does not necessarily mean Correia quality, more like Masterson, Brett Anderson, McCarthy. But the Twins will sign a free agent starter of some sort. I always thought Shields was a good option, but he will probably go 5 years, that is a huge risk. And I never thought Scherzer or Lester were realistic options. I also think there is less money in the payroll than we think. I didn't realize this until yesterday but corporate contracts are up after the season, they are going to take a huge revenue hit with those re-ups. There is certainly money for next year, but they might not have as much flexibility going forward as we assume.
  3. I would think horrendous starting pitching had as much to do with the need for big bullpens. You really need to watch other teams for long stretches for some context.
  4. How did Phil Mackey muster the genius to come up with those teams? But I agree, Cardinals are absolutely the team the Twins should emulate. And there is no internal candidate right now.
  5. The tone of this post makes it seem like you have in mind another team in mlb that uses their bullpen differently or more optimally. You might find 3. I would argue managing the bullpen is one of Gardy's strength. The nitpicks here are a result of watching way too much Twins and not nearly enough other teams. Good teams find roles for guys and hammer them in that role.
  6. This is my answer too. They were a group that just wasn't that good but obviously overperformed thanks to great coaching from Anderson and guidance from Gardy. But on a serious note, I suspect no more than 3 guys (and probably 2) will be on the opening day roster that were on the opening day roster this year.
  7. Coming into the season the general thought was that the pitching would be better but there were massive question marks with the lineup. Now the Twins are probably going to end up a top 5-6 offense. Someone is doing something right.
  8. Concur 100%. I can't agree more. It is time.
  9. This strikes me more as your opinion than reality.
  10. Maybe Vargas could start in AAA to give Parmelee some more run too.
  11. Mauer might not be getting any better either.
  12. I'm indifferent to what they do with Anderson if they keep Gardy.
  13. Fair enough. But if they hire Antony they would officially be the dumbest organization in professional sports.* *Though I want to leave myself with one extremely unlikely out - if they rapidly improve next year and sustain a high level of success (as in multiple ALCS/WS appearances) for multiple seasons and Ryan then decides to step down.
  14. Correct. I want to repeat my question - would people think differently of what Ryan actually has done if he said in clear language what his actions clearly showed what he was doing?
  15. You wrote an article that long just to say that perhaps Rick Anderson should go?
  16. I would maybe state that between him, Schafer, Santana, and considering the options that are available in free agency, the Twins could probably get away without signing a stopgap CF this offseason. The Twins still need to acquire a LF. And probably some pitching.
  17. Out of curiosity, what was your prediction for the rotation a year ago to start this season? I go FA, Hughes, Gibson, Nolasco, Meyer. I thought there would be no way Meyer starts in the rotation, but the lack of other options might change that. Pelfrey will be the long man out of camp.
  18. So maybe the difference between Ryan and Smith is that Ryan can say no? I would say the main job of a GM is to manage the people below you. Your post does a good job of stating the difference between Ryan and Smith in that regard. Things under Smith were a mess. True he didn't personally do everything himself but he was responsible for it to run correctly.
  19. I would cite the teams he built in the aughts and the way he rebuilt the entire franchise from the mess left by Bill Smith. I know both of these points have been debated to death and many people don't agree. I'm comfortable with that.
  20. Not wishful thinking, it's reality. The only possible way Antony is the next GM is if it turns around real quick and there is great success for a couple of seasons and Ryan decides to retire then.
  21. I think Gardy should be gone two seasons ago, so I won't touch that half of it. For Ryan, I believe him to be one of the best GMs in baseball, so I would like to stick with him. He has weaknesses, but strengths that surpass them. Much harder to quantify the performance of a GM compared to a player.
  22. I don't believe the vast majority of Twins fans had a notion that Antony had much to do with the beginning of the season. The main issue will be his overall association with the stink of the last four years. The GM will be Terry Ryan or they are going to blow it up. The Pohlads are very loyal, but they aren't stupid.
  23. I think there is virtually no chance Antony is the next GM, but at some point his last 20 years should count more than 7 years of work 20 years ago.
  24. I think the Twins have reached a point where it is impossible for them to do anything without being criticized. The only difference was this was a national guy instead of local. The Twins have reached a point where people are just looking for a chance to pile on and are actually upset when something positive happens. And I"ll repeat my defense of the marketing department - it might look bad, but there is really no way to put lipstick on this pig and make it presentable. That isn't the marketing department's problem.
