  1. I don't want to look it up for link, but latest report was he would be in extended until December then play winter ball in the Caribbean.
  2. It is, and not surprising. Perkins and Fien are the only guarantees going into next year. He has a legit shot to break camp with the Twins.
  3. Burdi has a legitimate shot to make the team out of spring training, the only guarantees should be Perkins and Fien. Of course it won't be handed to him.
  4. Baseball America had a good podcast up today on Castillo and Cuban signings. Another good perspective. Big takeaway, general consensus of scouting community was that Cespedes was best coming out, followed by Abreu, followed by Castillo - but obviously money went the other direction. Puig was a special case because there was so little information available. They also brought up lots of Cuban players that signed and haven't exactly panned out. We tend to downplay those transactions because they don't fit the narrative.
  5. Are you sure you want to take a controversial position like the Twins should have signed guys that turned out to be good.
  6. Cards yes. But I'll be very interested to see if you think so highly of the A's and Rays in a year or two. People said the exact same thing about the Twins and copying their methods, hiring their staff, not too long ago.
  7. Hey, at least you are starting to realize the overall effectiveness of free agency in general. The Twins record with free agents is pretty comparable to most teams.
  8. For context, do you know how many international free agents had a bonus larger than Cabrera when he signed? It was less than ten, an I think he was top 5 all time. To complain about the Twins not spending more at the time is to complain that they never signed one of the top 5 all time bonuses, which, considering the financial situation they were dealing with at the time, seems a little unfair.
  9. My main issue with the NBA is way too many games. Second issue is way too coached, becomes too plodding and grind it out.
  10. Good luck with that. People clamor for every free agent, say I told you so on the few that work out and remain silent for the majority of signings that ultimately don't work out as expected. It's the benefit of being a fan.
  11. Shouldn't the Twins want to stay out of the PCL, I thought Vegas was among the worst stadiums, complete bandbox.
  12. He pitched fine and certainly is more inspiring than much of what the Twins have thrown out there this season, but I don't believe has pitched in a way that has left the Twins with no choice but to call him up. I want him up for some time in the bullpen but I won't be devastated if they decide to wait.
  13. Fien seems like a better bet than Milone, Pressly, Duensing and Thielbar going forward. But it would be a good time to turn over the bullpen, I don't think Swarzak/Duensing/Burton are back, Deduno is unlikely, which leaves Perkins, Pressly, Theilbar, and Fien and 3-4 new slots.
  14. I recommend the Effectively Wild podcast from today, they do a good job of covering this signing. They had an interesting take on Cuban free agents that are currently in the DR, basically asking for six figures for guys that are worse than senior signs in the draft and banking on the continually expanding Cuban bubble. One of these guys will pop it, could be Castillo. But they obviously said the same thing about Abreu and especially Puig and those have been great signings.
  15. You are talking about really different scenarios. I'm curious if it has ever happened with a free agent signed from outside the organization. I'm not saying it won't happen, I'm saying I can never recall it actually happening and don't think it will happen (for the reasons I have stated).
  16. I imagine there is some flexibility for 8 year extensions signed with the current clubs that go deep into decline years. Did you find any 3-5 year free agent contracts that included this? That would be the comp, right? EDIT: Your last sentence is certainly factually correct, I wouldn't dispute that. I do think a player probably wouldn't do it and the union wouldn't be happy, but there is nothing in the rules to prevent it.
  17. Fair enough, responding to an extreme minority position and acting like many people hold it is indeed better. And the lack of quotes confuses me.
  18. Not just the Cards, teams have been doing this for decades. Even the Twins - also with Liriano, Baker and others. Meyer is a classic guy to this with, and I still think it happens.
  19. Tired of beating up strawmen?
  20. Personally, I think this shows the complete and utter rot that Ryan inherited. Completely rebuilding a major league rotation and minor league depth takes time. I would go big on a free agent pitcher and get a stopgap for lF.
  21. I'm pretty sure they offered a specific three person package - Jackson, Hughes, Marquez - and then pulled it after three days when the Twins didn't take it. This was in early December.
  22. I think Pinto and Hicks are givens, Herrmann is probable, and Colabello will come up if the Twins are feeling generous. Pryor is a given, Meyer has a decent shot, and they probably call up Johnson or Darnell or possibly both. I think there is a still a chance Burton and/or Duensing don't make it past September 1. If they get rid of them might open up a spot for Oliveros.
  23. You don't say.
  24. LA is much more likely to trade Kemp or Either than Pederson.
  25. The importance has probably decreased since arbitration doesn't matter for free agents, but I suspect the issue is that they want a market set at certain ages for certain positions. Frontloading contracts depresses the market in later years of a career.
