  1. One issue that you didn't mention that is much bigger is that the key sponsorships for the team (think Delta sky club, Budweiser roof deck) were 5 year deals that expire this year. The Twins are going to get crushed with their revenue streams starting next year. That is a much bigger deal than lack of renewal of season tickets. They won't have quite the payroll space many have been speculating so far. They need to hope that the young (cheap) guys get good in a hurry and turn this thing around.
  2. So Maddon passed on managing the Red Sox but he would be willing to come up to this mess?
  3. I would support a Masterson and Rasmus offseason. Realistic too. I think Shields gets too much, so a make good option could be very shrewd if they choose wisely.
  4. i think people generally make too much out of quotes from Twins officials, but that is probably a different story. I see this more as frustration than greasing the wheels for a sell low departure, and I think Gardy is absolutely justified in his frustration. It is really bad form to pull yourself out of the lineup and then show up late the next day, if I was Gardy I would be furious. And this is doubly so for someone with Hicks track record. More reason, in my opinion, for the Twins to make sure they sign a veteran professional OF in the offseason. And a new manager. Beyond time for a new atmosphere on many fronts.
  5. Because Duensing and Swarzak had, and still have, no trade value?
  6. You are right, I misrepresented Reusse in my post.
  7. I should clarify my post so as to not slander Reusse. These are not his arguments, these are the arguments he is hearing from his sources from the Twins front office when he checks in. These are not verbatim, but Reusse's spin on what he is hearing. He is saying his sense is that Gardy will say for the reasons stated, not that it is a sure thing or that he agrees. He also says that a big motivation for Gardy is to leave the team in the same shape for the next manager as Tom Kelly left it for him. My counter-argument to that would be this was the year for that to happen and he failed.
  8. I should add to this that this is not a critique but instead a personal preference. Seth does incredible work with the minor leagues and that is not repeated often enough. I look forward to the rest of the list.
  9. Probably also why he was in the lineup the next day instead of indefinitely suspended.
  10. I tend to think it makes sense to analyze prospects through tiers and through types. One reason I really relate to John Sickels and how he does prospects. He ranks them, but gives grades, which gives some sense of tier, and also explains well what a letter at each level truly means and lets the individual rank it as they see fit. A grade C in AA is much different than a grade C in low A or rookie ball.
  11. Reusse has been tweeting and talking on his radio show recently about Gardy and whether he will stay. His main points were that the Twins are going to get killed in the media and at the gate no matter which way they go, and they still have the opinion that he is a good manager that has been stuck with bad players so they will probably keep him. I generally agree with this analysis both in terms of Gardy's ability and the fact it will make no difference in the media or at the gate. However, your point is huge. Keeping Gardy, while probably meaning very little in the offseason, risks a really ugly season if they don't start out playing well at the beginning of the season. Bringing in a new maanger wipes the slate clean and at least eliminates that angle of ugliness and negativity surrounding the team. People will rightly kill the team if they are bad, but at least they can spin a new beginning.
  12. Yes, May will still be a rookie. Guys to exhaust rookie eligibility are Santana, Vargas, Pinto, Tonkin. Actually an OK class, should be 4 guys on the roster for the next several years. And a lot more to come.
  13. I think this trade would be in the ballpark as far as talent is concerned. I also think it would be hard for a team in the Twins situation to move 9 years of young control for a 34 yo corner OF with a year and an option left on his contract. If I'm trading Dozier and Arcia I want good young controllable assets in return.
  14. Can you at least add Adam Brett Walker to make your trade proposal legitimate?
  15. Seems buzz on twitter from local guys is all about Gardy coming back. Oh goody.
  16. I think both of your questions happen more than you would think, but your points are well taken. This is a team with really bad fundamentals. I actually think they have a little bit more talent than the record indicates but the fundamentals cause them a few games. I just found it funny your rant was on a game that they won.
  17. OK, I will admit tonight's lineup leaves me shaking my head. Pinto is not catching, which whatever, but also not DHing so Parmelee and Herrmann can be in the lineup while Mauer gets a day off.
  18. Spoiler alert - the Twins won!
  19. I think you can have the position of acknowledging outcomes are getting worse each year and still think it is acceptable on a one year deal to play part time LF. This is especially true when considering the alternatives. Again, no matter who is signed it will be easy to pick out flaws.
  20. Keep in mind I'm one of those fans. I think this board represents pretty close to the elite of Twins fan as far as knowledge and understanding of baseball and how a franchise should work, valuing players, etc. and at least 90 percent of us would quickly run a baseball team into the ground if given control (and that is probably being extremely optimistic). And I would be careful to assume "fans" have a different agenda than management that would result in divergent moves - fans want to be entertained and management wants to make money, those can certainly co-exist, and probably both sides are at their best when maximized. And people can certainly spend money on the team, be entertained, and have pretty close to no idea what would be a smart strategy going forward, no matter what they may think.
  21. I wonder about the role Ryan plays in who plays how much at what position. When quoted, Ryan generally says that he provides the players and the manager makes the decision on the lineup. I do wonder if Ryan ever intervenes strongly on this as there does seem to be some conflict between trying to win games and trying to do what is best for the long term good of the org. I can't imagine Ryan is happy with Santana playing a lot of CF, but he also probably realizes there wasn't much of an alternative for most of the season. Other GMs seem to be much more hands on, but that might also be exaggerated through media reports (both ways).
  22. I think Cleveland is a good model of how to be a competitive team. It is shrewd trades and under the radar signings, not pricey free agents. The guys they actually spent on have been underwhelming. It is internal improvement that allowed for much of their success. I think the Twins should use this as the model, with the possibility of an additional free agent or two because of increased revenue streams. Chasing free agents as a primary fix will lead to problems. Improvement for the Twins will come from shrewd trades and internal improvement.
  23. The problem is that fans are usually idiots. If you do what fans want it for the sake of that's what they want, it generally leads to more problems and does nothing to sell tickets in the future. I would be surprised if firing Gardy actually resulted in more ticket sales in and of itself. Only two things matter - winning and/or an exciting young team. The Twins will have a base of some number (probably 10k ish) as long as they have a good stadium and a team that is not a complete fiasco, the rest of the margin depends on winning or makeup of team.
  24. You state this like it is unique to the Twins. Making money is the primary goal of virtually every franchise, some just have better PR operations that are better at deceiving their fans. And, as stated, winning and making money can often go hand in hand. I also think it is important to draw the distinction between the desire to be profitable and the desire to maximize profits. If the Twins wanted to solely maximize profits, they wouldn't have spent as much as they did on free agents last offseason. None of those free agents did anything to move the needle on season tickets, and realistically there is no free agent they can sign this offseason that will sell more than 5 season tickets.
  25. The issue is that the Twins can't sign a FA LF who will be a good hitter and good defender, that player doesn't exist. It will be easy to complain about the shortcomings of a potential FA but we should also acknowledge that there isn't a great FA alternative. If a good defender is the priority, perhaps they should just stick with Schafer. I agree that Buxton won't be up early, if at all, next year.
