  1. They have to start somewhere. Seemed like the logical first step.
  2. I would also argue that even relatively minor tweaks (a decent starter and LF and turning over some of the bullpen) would increase the baseline talent level by at least 4-5 wins. If they go big it could be even better. If they hire the right manager they really could take a pretty significant jump next year
  3. Now that's funny. Criticizing Mauer is 95% of his baseball coverage.
  4. Seems Mike Berardino is falling under the same spell. Calls him the best outside the org candidate. No No No.
  5. Not to derail the thread too much, but the difference is people yell rubbish against the other "side" also balance that with many good things for their own "side". Olbermann has no "base" of support in that his schtick will be entirely on criticizing everything. Works for a season but eventually people get bored with it. Lots of "I like Olbermann but this time..." will eventually just become "I'm bored with Olbermann". He is a smart and talented guy, I'll be curious to see if he can adjust.
  6. My mistake. I don't think Houston still signing Aiken is an issue, I thought the grievance was in regards to the other two players caught up in the mess.
  7. A player needs to give permission for a team to draft him again. I suspect Aiken will not grant Houston that right (or that Houston would even be interested).
  8. I doubt he lasts another year. People like rants but too much with no balance wears you out.
  9. I'm not surprised. I thought it was a sure thing until the recent rumblings that he will stay, but it is the right move. It will be Molitor or an outside candidate, so intriguing names starting to float around.
  10. If they don't turn it around next season Ryan will be gone. Beyond that, I don't know if he does a whole lot different. Signs a starter and an OF and rolls with what he has.
  11. I would second this. Strikes me as the most likely scenario at the moment. I think Anderson and Ullger are out of the organization and Vavra returns to the minors as a roving instructor.
  12. The Twins will do the right thing when they exhaust all other options.
  13. Never mind the 4 90 loss seasons, we have a good player, trade him!
  14. To be a contrarian I'll say he's gone and Molitor is new manager.
  15. You have a lot of confidence that Pinto, Vargas and Mauer will all be productive next year. And at the same time none of the three will really have that much trade value since Pinto and Vargas have questionable defensive value. What is wrong with depth?
  16. Colorado bump aside, I thought he was cooked after last season.
  17. I question how many innings Santana and Crain would have delivered for the Twins this year. Overall that pitching staff is relatively meh, so wouldn't have made a huge improvement over the current roster.
  18. Not really making excuses for getting swept, just making a bigger point that with that rotation a championship was probably unrealistic that season. Still should have won that series. 2006 was the only season under Gardy that they lost as the better team in a series, while they won one as the inferior team in 2002, so pretty much a wash. But to be extra clear - I think Gardy should be gone two seasons ago.
  19. Certainly part of it. And makes it doubly hard in my mind to kill Terry Ryan for what followed the next half a decade. And to take it even further, to be that much more impressed that Ryan pulled them out of it with sustained success. All adds to my general position to give Ryan a little more leeway.
  20. The Twins are currently 6th in mlb in runs and 1st since mid July. He did something right building a lineup this year.
  21. Macphail destroyed his own championship team. The Twins were cooked by 1995 when MacPhail jumped ship during the strike. Why do you think he left?
  22. It was 2-2 when Bonser left and Garza was out of gas by the end of the regular season - perhaps look at his game logs. We get it, you hate the current administration, and there are plenty of actual factual statements that can be made to push that position. But yes, the offense was a massive disappointment that series.
  23. Doesn't "hits saved" imply analysis of results of a shift vs. non-shift situation. It is quite possible that teams shift too much and negate the advantage. One season of data certainly won't provide the answer either way.
  24. I know you know that Bonser started game 2 or that series and a broken Radke started game 3. Great team, great season, but the starting pitching wasn't there at the end.
  25. I think fringe competition next year is not out of the question. The Twins are about 4 games below their Pythagorean record and I expect some additional improvement through internal improvement and by a free agent addition or two. With this combo I would expect a record of 77-78 wins as a median baseline entering the season. A few good breaks would push that into fringe competition. A few bad breaks would of course leave them flirting with 90 losses again.
