  1. A charge and expectation this vague leaves plenty of opportunity to be critical no matter what they do. I would personally add a bullpen arm and that's about it. Maybe a corner of/dh rental if all the young guys flop (and probably still not if the cost is more than money). A ss or c is pie in the sky based on cost and risk/reward.
  2. Very likely, can't say I looked at him very deeply when I was responding to that hypothetical. But I would keep the bigger point that the Cubs would flip Russell for Dozier and I would trade Sano for an above average SS in their prime with 4 years of control. I don't think the Twins are trading Dozier and I'm skeptical that Polanco can stick at SS. Certainly worth taking the time to figure that out though. And if not, he could be pretty good trade bait, either for an elite rental (not this year) or a solid player at a different position of need, or as part of a bigger trade.
  3. Plouffe will have paternity leave in the next 2-4 weeks, Sano will get his first taste then, might even stay.
  4. I'll second this. Response from my conservative friends (who often post stuff on Facebook) was much more subdued than I thought. Perhaps this wasn't as divisive as was assumed. An extremely loud minority against, a lot of people in favor, and a lot of people that might be against, but just aren't that bothered anymore. That's probably a healthy split.
  5. I agree on Castro specifically, but a an above average SS in their prime with 4 years of control left seems like a pretty good value for Sano.
  6. I'm not 100% sure I agree when it comes to minority rights. This is one of the weaknesses of a democratic system - that the legislature can trample the rights of minorities, and is therefore one of the key functions of the judicial to protect them.
  7. Not only a reliable power pen, but about 10-12 of them with options and flexibility to shuttle between AAA and the majors.
  8. I wouldn't give up Dozier for Castro. EDIT: But it would be close. I would consider Sano for Castro or a similar player. I'm just not a huge fan of Castro relative to his value so I'm probably the wrong person to ask.
  9. He should stop sliding head first. But yes, terrible injury for a hitter, probably won't be right until next year.
  10. The constitution is as rigid as you need it to be, right? Even so, my thought is that the constitution exists to serve the people, the people don't exist to serve the constitution.
  11. If B-B-B-B-Buston doesn't mention it to the trainers, what do you expect them to do?
  12. This is a good way to describe it and I would endorse this usage. For quick and dirty ways to compare players across positions and stadiums (and eras) it certainly has its usages and is probably even the best tool for a fan. But I wouldn't use it as much of an authority or the primary stat that I would cite. And in response to your other quote, I would be quite surprised if teams gave it much thought. They have much more sophisticated systems of evaluation.
  13. I can get behind B-B-B-B-Buston. Don't listen to the haters.
  14. Indeed they did, and took about 3 years before he got himself under control and really took off.
  15. He doesn't talk like a conservative evangelical - which unfortunately is all that matters for way too many people. Plus he's a Democrat.
  16. They are important and I welcome all efforts as well. Just don't think WAR is it.
  17. Separately and with a different unit of measure than offense.
  18. Are we really supposed to believe that there is actually thought, analysis and/or strategy behind the actions of the front office?
  19. I wouldn't try to convert defensive metrics into runs and I certainly wouldn't try to equate said conversion with offensive production and create one number. Debating the correct ratio is a distraction. I'm skeptical of defensive metrics but I can accept them as a quick and dirty directional list within a position subgroup (with several caveats). But calculating them into a precise number and merging it with offensive numbers (and a lesser extent baserunning) is a few steps too far for me.
  20. I'm amazed at how much weight people put into numbers at Low A by teenagers both good and bad. He's where he needs to be, mostly just needs to grow.
  21. I would say an average of 1 a week minimum. Poor slides might have already cost him 2 or 3 plays and he was safe on a head first slide that likely would have been out feet first. So I don't buy this at all. He has to learn proper technique or the best case is he is much less valuable and his speed no longer plays on the bases.
  22. Generally thought by experts that it was early, so I agree. But he also shows flashes of amazing talent. If this is as minor as they say it is, looks like it could time out for a stint on the DL, followed by a decent rehab assignment and a recall following the all star break. Wonder if 10 games is enough to clean up some of the rougher edges.
  23. But they aren't altering his development cycle - he is going to be a reliever the rest of the year and start next year as a starter. The issue, if he performs, is how aggressive does the front office want to be and do they want to deal with 40 man issues prematurely.
