  1. I wonder what the plan is now that he is going back to Ft Myers. I am absolutely on board with trying the maximum for greatest success and then rebooting if it doesn't work.
  2. I wonder if a team would get creative with a 6 man rotation to have a start and then have that same starter available for 1-2 innings on day 4, which would usually be a throw day. Could potentially extract additional value from the arms and still give them plenty of rest.
  3. It seems the Twins have spread their money around in a variety of different ways since the caps were installed. I generally like the plan of going for quantity over quality, but if they really like Javier, why not?
  4. Indeed it did, no argument. But he's also not dead yet. My pushback would be that your plan, such as I understand it, would have made no difference. You acknowledge that his fastball was too straight and the Twins clearly tried to adjust it in the offseason and these are the results. Not sure how a couple of games last year at AA would have changed that.
  5. I thought the tinker was to get movement on his fastball.
  6. Oh, they should have protected him. EDIT: But my bigger point is that if Gilmartin was in the organization right now I'm not sure he would be in the majors ahead of, say, Rogers or Darnell.
  7. Actually I disagree. He would have pitched differently last year (ie straight fastball) vs. the tweaks they have made over the offseason. And, I think he might have been pretty successful in AA using a straight fastball in a way that wouldn't have worked in the bigs. So it would have been counterproductive to the end product they want him to be in the majors. The plan for last year was to acclimate to pro ball and get innings in. The work began this year. In this sense the process was followed, though the results have not.
  8. He'll also k alot, sometimes in big spots. But he'll hit bombs. And the other elite prospects are doing well but they certainly have ups and downs. Don't put on Sano an unrealistic interpretation of what other prospects have done either.
  9. Agree with this.
  10. At least one of them. But realistically they and Gilmartin and Duensing are all close to the same guy. But certainly worth it to see if one can perform better than Duensing for three months, pretty low bar.
  11. Yes. 2001 was the last hurrah for that Cleveland run. Theu were better than KC this year.
  12. There is some exempted amount of a signing (and a certain number of signings for that amount) that does not count against the cap but don't remember the amount. Might be less than $250k.
  13. Because he asked a question of why people weren't posting more? So I answered the question. I have great expectations for Sano too, not sure where you are getting the thought people are expecting him to be bad. He is the one guy I expect to come out raking from the system.
  14. Twins have 2-3 LH in Rochester that are probably as good as Gilmartin. That really isn't the issue at the moment. I suspect they made the decision based on stuff/velocity.
  15. Actually, based on the conclusions you seem to be drawing compared to what was actually happening, the numbers were lying. And this is especially true if your "multiple writers and analysts" look at the same numbers and all draw the same conclusions. Feedback loops and such. I'm quite confident you can take similar stretches of games for, say Nunez and Escobar, and find a similar OPS (if not higher). That doesn't change the fact he was struggling for basically the entire year. Good for the coaches to make adjustments, much wiser to have them worked on in a lower pressure environment of AAA.
  16. They can still sign multiple $250k guys that don't count against the cap right? Maybe they figured the other big ticket guys were gobbled up by the handful of teams blowing past their budget and went big on the guy they wanted. Perhaps they have other lesser guys (bigger than $250k) in mind if they can acquire some cap room - Kiley said Philly and Atlanta are trying to do the same thing. If I want to be really optimistic, maybe this is part of a package deal to get guys lined up for next year.
  17. I think the Twins might be on to something with Meyer, unfortunately. They gave him the ball every fifth day in the minors and he didn't produce.
  18. So you wanted the guy to debut professionally at a high level while also revamping all his mechanics at the same time? Seems ambitious and unrealistic. They wanted him to debut and adjust to pro ball while keeping up innings, make adjustments during instructs and debut them this year with an aggressive promotion. I really don't see the problem.
  19. This may be true. I was agnostic about the pick personally.
  20. Watching him he really doesn't look all that different from Duensing. Just don't see this as much of a loss.
  21. By all means keep scratching your head. I chuckle at the thought of a "hot" three weeks. Take a closer look at who he actually got his extra base hits off and what his bb and k rates were. He walked into a couple late in blowouts against mopup guys but it wasn't sustainable. He certainly has talent but was mostly lost at the plate. Not surprising the same thing happened after his recall. He's a professional, a couple of weeks in the minors isn't going to derail a hot streak if there was actually something behind it other than brief randomness.
  22. Do you follow development plans at all or just look at numbers and throw up your hands? Twins draft a guy and let him finish his first pro season as is and then make adjustments during instructs. Adjustments that you yourself admit that he needed to make. He brought these to AA, which is a pretty aggressive promotion. Clearly he hasn't taken to the adjustments as well as planned, but he'll have a chance now to regroup. The Twins (and Burdi) weren't ignorant of his weaknesses, they made adjustments. Now it is up to the guy to actually execute said adjustments. Nothing would have changed if he went to AA last year and pitched the same style as he did in college.
  23. I would probably emphasize the role Meyer has had in not propelling his career forward.
  24. I'm not scratching my head on the demotion. Looking at some numbers and comparing him to utility/bench guys isn't going to tell that story. The problem was the recall, but considering the situation the Twins didn't have much of a choice. Now he can get the low pressure reps he needs.
  25. The mistake was calling him back up. He wasn't ready but the team was desperate for a body. Now he'll get his time, hopefully get his stuff together and have a chance to return.
