  1. Are you sure? Tonkin has had a few chances, not done a whole lot. Again, doesn't mean he isn't worthy of another chance or that Achter/Rogers/Thielbar shouldn't get another chances either compared to the slop currently being used.
  2. I don't think you can shift half the pen, but by all means try two guys. Maybe a guy can catch fire like Thompson/Boyer did earlier in the year. I suspect Perkins, Fien, Graham, Pressly (if healthy) won't move, but anyone past that.
  3. I'm not against trying it but that strikes me as little more than shuffling deck chairs
  4. They aren't going to bring him in in the middle of innings. Might have used him to start tie games or maybe to start innings in the 6th.
  5. You prefer he uses Duensing? As someone said earlier, Molitor's ability to manage a bullpen will improve drastically once he gets better pitchers.
  6. So far so good for Santana. May has had one outing as good as this in his 15 (June 3 vs. Boston). But I agree that this is likely short term. If it isn't it means Pelfrey picked it back up of course isn't a bad thing either.
  7. Do Libertarians actually have solutions for anything? I generally thought their position was best summed up as don't do anything about anything and let the market take care of it. Not that I disagree. I was just commenting that socially liberal, fiscally conservative is the default position of liberal elites (or probably just elites in general). Not all liberals mind you and certainly not what comes out of the Democratic party.
  8. Levi, FWIW, I think you are describing the liberal elite position, not a libertarian position.
  9. I wonder if we are too big and diverse that the Federal government as currently constructed just can't work. Maybe some decentralization and focus on more local solutions to problems is loremore the future.
  10. And money too. To say very few teams is to really not pay attention to what happens across baseball. I don't like it but I think Pelfrey is one more start away from being out of the rotation.
  11. Don't like it but also don't think it lasts very long. Best case he skips a couple of starts and gets back in the rotation after the all star break. Keeps his total innings down and has him fresher down the stretch.
  12. I am happy with him too. If they like him go for it, then back fill the quantity with some of the lower cost guys. I generally like the mixes of strategy they have used the best several years. Sometimes going big, sometimes lots of quantity, sometimes more of a mix.
  13. Probably better to think of him as a compiler and not a scout when it comes to international players. No chance he gets enough looks at an individual player for a meaningful scouting report, but does have contacts throughout the game that feed him information, and enough of them that he shouldn't be overly influenced by self-serving contacts. The issue with international rankings is not that they are bad, but that they are 16. Huge changes between then and the majors and lots of opportunities for later bloomers. Another good reason to go for quantity.
  14. I think the need to upgrade the pen is obvious, but the options to do so are much less so. Teams aren't exactly floating good relievers out there. And I hope we are beyond the idea of Lester Oliveros being the solution. And Rogers might (to emphasize, might) be a slight upgrade on Thompson and/or Duensing but that is far from a sure thing as well. Doesn't mean that can't give it a try, but other than Meyer there really isn't a potential difference maker in the minors. The best hope was always Pressly taking a step forward (and now he might be hurt), or maybe Graham or Tonkin doing something.
  15. This is true, but entering the bottom of the 10th they still needed to pitch at 2 least innings to win. Not unreasonable to roll with Thompson considering the first hitter was RH followed by 3 lefties and then saving Perkins for the next inning. I actually think this was about playing best matchups and not merely keeping Perkins only for a save situation.
  16. But 3 walks would have done harm.
  17. It's a couple of things. Excessively pessimistic about what they do see and optimistic about what they can't see. (though there are scouting reports to exaggerate and stats to manipulate). And the unknown mediocrity is always superior to the known mediocrity. Couple that with the thought that, despite the fact they are still hanging on to a playoff spot, people still want to blow up the team.
  18. And the 10th and possibly 11th, 12th and 13th too. Not sure why Perkins doesn't pitch every inning.
  19. There must have been more to the thinking than a slight difference in the readiness of their bats.
  20. After all this, I still think May stays and Pelfrey goes to the bullpen and we can all be happy.
  21. Bashing Duensing gets likes. Pretty easy formula.
  22. Where did I say I agree? Not protecting Gilmartin was a mistake. I think one of the other LH relievers should be up.
  23. Believe it or not I don't agree with every decision the Twins front office makes involving personnel.
  24. My (probably naive) hope is that the Twins went a little big on Javier in order to establish relationships that will pay dividends next year. From what I have read Atlanta and Philly are positioning themselves to go big next year, no reason the Twins can't join them. Have heard rumblings, but I'll believe it when it happens.
  25. Instead of continually asking this same question to all of us who obviously don't know, have you ever considered asking Terry Ryan himself? This would be a perfect question on his Sunday morning show.
